Book Roger Bacon and the Incorruptible Human 1220 1292

Download or read book Roger Bacon and the Incorruptible Human 1220 1292 written by Meagan S. Allen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Franciscan alchemist Roger Bacon’s (1220-1292) interest in the role of alchemy in medicine, and how this interest connected with the thirteenth-century milieu in which he was writing. Though twelfth-century Latin alchemy had largely been concerned with transmuting base metals into noble ones, Bacon believed that the natural principles taught in alchemy would be better used in medicine. In an age where many physicians were theorizing about ways to prevent the effects of aging, Bacon held that combining alchemy and humoral medicine would allow one to extend their life by decades, even centuries. By examining Bacon’s alchemical, medical, and mathematical works, this book argues that Bacon combined a number of sources to create a unique plan for prolonging human life. His understanding of disease and aging was ultimately Galenic in nature, and his understanding of how pharmaceuticals work can be traced back to his mathematical theories, especially that of the multiplication of species. The book provides a new system for organizing Bacon’s alchemically-produced medicines, and explains what Bacon saw as the difference between each, and how they could have different physiological effects. Bacon is situated within the thirteenth-century contexts in which he was writing – that of the university-educated and newly professionalized medical practitioners, who were invested in finding ways to extend human life; and the Franciscan order, with their understanding of the innate goodness of the physical body, the resurrection, and corporeal union with God. Filling a major lacuna in scholarship on the history of medieval medical writings, this book provides vital reading for historians of medicine, pre- and early modern European science, and medieval philosophy and religion.

Book Compendium of the Study of Theology

Download or read book Compendium of the Study of Theology written by Rogerus Bacon and published by Brill Archive. This book was released on 1988 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part I the author draws on classical authors to illustrate three causes of error in his time and underscores the need for an integral understanding of the signification of terms. In Part II he proposes six themes: a new classification of signs; a theory that common terms signify principally objects, not concepts; connotation as natural signification; common terms signifying an entity and a nonentity are equivocal; terms can lose their signification; a non-Aristotelian classification of equivocation in six modes. Bacon was a very original semanticist and some of his theories helped pave the way for Ockham a few decades later. This treatise opens many windows on to the debate on semantics in the late 13th century.

Book The Force of Reason and the Logic of Force

Download or read book The Force of Reason and the Logic of Force written by R. Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-08-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Force of Reason and the Logic of Force investigates the concept of force through various 'episodes' in the history of philosophy. The author argues that force arises on the basis of the distinction of reality and mere appearance. The book looks at figures who reduce force to something other than itself as well as figures who develop a 'logic of force' that allows them to trace the operation of force without such a reduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much is known about the grammar of the modistae and about its eclipse; this book sets out to trace its rise. In the late eleventh century grammar became an analytical rather than an exegetical discipline under the impetus of the new theology. Under the impetus of Arab learning the ancient sciences were reshaped according to the norms of Aristotle's Analytics, and developed within a structure of speculative sciences beginning with grammar and culminating in theology. Though the modistae acknowledge Aristotle, Donatus, Priscian and the Arab commentators, their roots also lie in Augustine and Boethius, and they took as much from their scholastic contemporaries as they gave them. This book traces the genesis of a grammar which communicated freely with other speculative sciences, shared their structures and methods, and affirmed its own individuality by defining its object as the causes of language.
