Book Enumerative Combinatorics Volume 2

Download or read book Enumerative Combinatorics Volume 2 written by Richard P. Stanley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-13 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of a two-volume basic introduction to enumerative combinatorics covers the composition of generating functions, trees, algebraic generating functions, D-finite generating functions, noncommutative generating functions, and symmetric functions. The chapter on symmetric functions provides the only available treatment of this subject suitable for an introductory graduate course on combinatorics, and includes the important Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm. Also covered are connections between symmetric functions and representation theory. An appendix by Sergey Fomin covers some deeper aspects of symmetric function theory, including jeu de taquin and the Littlewood-Richardson rule. As in Volume 1, the exercises play a vital role in developing the material. There are over 250 exercises, all with solutions or references to solutions, many of which concern previously unpublished results. Graduate students and research mathematicians who wish to apply combinatorics to their work will find this an authoritative reference.

Book Mathematical Essays in honor of Gian Carlo Rota

Download or read book Mathematical Essays in honor of Gian Carlo Rota written by Bruce Sagan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-05-01 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April of 1996 an array of mathematicians converged on Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the Rotafest and Umbral Calculus Workshop, two con ferences celebrating Gian-Carlo Rota's 64th birthday. It seemed appropriate when feting one of the world's great combinatorialists to have the anniversary be a power of 2 rather than the more mundane 65. The over seventy-five par ticipants included Rota's doctoral students, coauthors, and other colleagues from more than a dozen countries. As a further testament to the breadth and depth of his influence, the lectures ranged over a wide variety of topics from invariant theory to algebraic topology. This volume is a collection of articles written in Rota's honor. Some of them were presented at the Rotafest and Umbral Workshop while others were written especially for this Festschrift. We will say a little about each paper and point out how they are connected with the mathematical contributions of Rota himself.

Book Essentials of Tropical Combinatorics

Download or read book Essentials of Tropical Combinatorics written by Michael Joswig and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to explain, at the graduate student level, connections between tropical geometry and optimization. Building bridges between these two subject areas is fruitful in two ways. Through tropical geometry optimization algorithms become applicable to questions in algebraic geometry. Conversely, looking at topics in optimization through the tropical geometry lens adds an additional layer of structure. The author covers contemporary research topics that are relevant for applications such as phylogenetics, neural networks, combinatorial auctions, game theory, and computational complexity. This self-contained book grew out of several courses given at Technische Universität Berlin and elsewhere, and the main prerequisite for the reader is a basic knowledge in polytope theory. It contains a good number of exercises, many examples, beautiful figures, as well as explicit tools for computations using $texttt{polymake}$.

Book Representation Theory of Finite Monoids

Download or read book Representation Theory of Finite Monoids written by Benjamin Steinberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first text on the subject provides a comprehensive introduction to the representation theory of finite monoids. Carefully worked examples and exercises provide the bells and whistles for graduate accessibility, bringing a broad range of advanced readers to the forefront of research in the area. Highlights of the text include applications to probability theory, symbolic dynamics, and automata theory. Comfort with module theory, a familiarity with ordinary group representation theory, and the basics of Wedderburn theory, are prerequisites for advanced graduate level study. Researchers in algebra, algebraic combinatorics, automata theory, and probability theory, will find this text enriching with its thorough presentation of applications of the theory to these fields. Prior knowledge of semigroup theory is not expected for the diverse readership that may benefit from this exposition. The approach taken in this book is highly module-theoretic and follows the modern flavor of the theory of finite dimensional algebras. The content is divided into 7 parts. Part I consists of 3 preliminary chapters with no prior knowledge beyond group theory assumed. Part II forms the core of the material giving a modern module-theoretic treatment of the Clifford –Munn–Ponizovskii theory of irreducible representations. Part III concerns character theory and the character table of a monoid. Part IV is devoted to the representation theory of inverse monoids and categories and Part V presents the theory of the Rhodes radical with applications to triangularizability. Part VI features 3 chapters devoted to applications to diverse areas of mathematics and forms a high point of the text. The last part, Part VII, is concerned with advanced topics. There are also 3 appendices reviewing finite dimensional algebras, group representation theory, and Möbius inversion.

Book Paleogenomics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charlotte Lindqvist
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2019-01-07
  • ISBN : 3030047539
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Paleogenomics written by Charlotte Lindqvist and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in genome-scale DNA sequencing technologies have revolutionized genetic research on ancient organisms, extinct species, and past environments. When it is recoverable after hundreds or thousands of years of unintended preservation, “ancient DNA” (or aDNA) is often highly degraded, necessitating specialized handling and analytical approaches. Paleogenomics defines the field of reconstructing and analyzing the genomes of historic or long-dead organisms, most often through comparison with modern representatives of the same or similar species. The opportunity to isolate and study paleogenomes has radically transformed many fields, spanning biology, anthropology, agriculture, and medicine. Examples include understanding evolutionary relationships of extinct species known only from fossils, the domestication of plants and animals, and the evolution and geographical spread of certain pathogens. This pioneering book presents a snapshot view of the history, current status, and future prospects of paleogenomics, taking a broad viewpoint that covers a range of topics and organisms to provide an up-to-date status of the applications, challenges, and promise of the field. This book is intended for a variety of readerships, including upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, professionals and experts in the field, as well as anyone excited by the extraordinary insights that paleogenomics offers.

It provides an overview of the current questions in computer science and related modern mathematical methods. The range of applications is very wide and reaches beyond computer science.

Book Conversational Problem Solving

Download or read book Conversational Problem Solving written by Richard P. Stanley and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features mathematical problems and results that would be of interest to all mathematicians, but especially undergraduates (and even high school students) who participate in mathematical competitions such as the International Math Olympiads and Putnam Competition. The format is a dialogue between a professor and eight students in a summer problem solving camp and allows for a conversational approach to the problems as well as some mathematical humor and a few nonmathematical digressions. The problems have been selected for their entertainment value, elegance, trickiness, and unexpectedness, and have a wide range of difficulty, from trivial to horrendous. They range over a wide variety of topics including combinatorics, algebra, probability, geometry, and set theory. Most of the problems have not appeared before in a problem or expository format. A Notes section at the end of the book gives historical information and references.
