Book excerpt: A modified approach for the application of Genetic Algorithm (GA) to the Channel Routing Problem has been proposed. The code based on the algorithm proposed in [1] has been implemented for the GA procedures of Initial Population Generation, Crossover, Mutation and Selection. A few improvements over the existing work have been made and the results so far obtained have been encouraging. Further experimentation is being done on the algorithm and other ideas generated during the development of the code are being implemented for faster convergence of the algorithm and for generation of more efficient results. Also application of variations of the GA technique like Vector GA and even other computationally intelligent techniques like Particle Swarm Optimization to the channel routing problem is being thought of.

Many of these innovations are reported in this volume. The size of FPL conferences has grown signi?cantly over the years. FPL in 2002 saw 214 papers submitted, representing an increase of 83% when compared to the year before. The interest and support for FPL in the programmable logic community continued this year with 216 papers submitted. The technical p- gram was assembled from 90 selected regular papers and 56 posters, resulting in this volume of proceedings. The program also included three invited plenary keynote presentations from LSI Logic, Xilinx and Cadence, and three industrial tutorials from Altera, Mentor Graphics and Dafca.

These challenges arise at all stages of working with Big Data, beginning with data generation and acquisition. The storage and management phase presents two critical challenges: infrastructure, for storage and transportation, and conceptual models. Finally, to extract meaning from Big Data requires complex analysis. Here the authors propose using metaheuristics as a solution to these challenges; they are first able to deal with large size problems and secondly flexible and therefore easily adaptable to different types of data and different contexts. The use of metaheuristics to overcome some of these data mining challenges is introduced and justified in the first part of the book, alongside a specific protocol for the performance evaluation of algorithms. An introduction to metaheuristics follows. The second part of the book details a number of data mining tasks, including clustering, association rules, supervised classification and feature selection, before explaining how metaheuristics can be used to deal with them. This book is designed to be self-contained, so that readers can understand all of the concepts discussed within it, and to provide an overview of recent applications of metaheuristics to knowledge discovery problems in the context of Big Data.

Various optimization techniques have been proposed in the past. While some of these methods have been shown to work well in applications and have become somewhat established over the years, other techniques have been ignored. Recently, there has been a growing interest in optimization algorithms based on principles observed in nature, termed Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs). Evolutionary Algorithms in VLSI CAD presents the basic concepts of EAs, and considers the application of EAs in VLSI CAD. It is the first book to show how EAs could be used to improve IC design tools and processes. Several successful applications from different areas of circuit design, like logic synthesis, mapping and testing, are described in detail. Evolutionary Algorithms in VLSI CAD consists of two parts. The first part discusses basic principles of EAs and provides some easy-to-understand examples. Furthermore, a theoretical model for multi-objective optimization is presented. In the second part a software implementation of EAs is supplied together with detailed descriptions of several EA applications. Within the last 10-13 years Binar·y Decision Diagmms (BDDs) have become the state-of-the-art data structure in VLSI CAD for representation and ma nipulation of Boolean functions. Today, BDDs are widely used and in the meantime have also been integrated in commercial tools, especially in the area of verijication and synthesis. The interest in BDDs results from the fact that the data structure is generally accepted as providing a good compromise between conciseness of representation and efficiency of manipulation. With increasing number of applications, also in non CAD areas, classical methods to handle BDDs are being improved and new questions and problems evolve and have to be solved. The book should help the reader who is not familiar with BDDs (or DDs in general) to get a quick start. On the other hand it will discuss several new aspects of BDDs, e.g. with respect to minimization and implementation of a package. Book excerpt: Reconfigurable circuit devices have opened up a fundamentally new way of creating adaptable systems. Combined with artificial evolution, reconfigurable circuits allow an elegant adaptation approach to compensating for changes in the distribution of input data, computational resource errors, and variations in resource requirements. Referred to as "Evolvable Hardware" (EHW), this paradigm has yielded astonishing results for traditional engineering challenges and has discovered intriguing design principles, which have not yet been seen in conventional engineering. In this thesis, we present new and fundamental work on Evolvable Hardware motivated by the insight that Evolvable Hardware needs to compensate for events with different change rates. To solve the challenge of different adaptation speeds, we propose a unified adaptation approach based on multi-objective evolution, evolving and propagating candidate solutions that are diverse in objectives that may experience radical changes. Focusing on algorithmic aspects, we enable Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) model, which we are using to encode Boolean circuits, for multi-objective optimization by introducing a meaningful recombination operator. We improve the scalability of CGP by objectives scaling, periodization of local- and global-search algorithms, and the automatic acquisition and reuse of subfunctions using age- and cone-based techniques. We validate our methods on the applications of adaptation of hardware classifiers to resource changes, recognition of muscular signals for prosthesis control and optimization of processor caches.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The field of FPGA design is ever-growing due to costs being lower than that of ASICs, as well as the time and cost of development. Creating programs to run on them is equally important as developing the devices themselves. Utilizing the increase in performance over software, as well as the ease of reprogramming the device, has led to complex concepts and algorithms that would otherwise be very time-consuming when implemented on software. One such focus has been towards a search and optimization algorithm called the genetic algorithm. The proposed approach is to take an existing application of the genetic algorithm on an FPGA, developed by Fernando et al. [1], and create several instances of it to make a parallel genetic algorithm engine. The genetic algorithm cores are interfaced with a controller module that will control the flow of data between them to implement the parallel execution. Both coarse-grained and fine-grained parallelism are tested and results collected to find the best performance when compared to the single core design. Initial experimental results show some improvement over the number of generations required to reach the optimal fitness level, as well as more significant improvement for the number of generations needed for the average fitness to reach the optimal level.
