Book Regulating the British Economy 1660 1850

Download or read book Regulating the British Economy 1660 1850 written by Perry Gauci and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by recent research on the cultural impact of economic change, an international team of leading academics and younger scholars examine the ways in which state and society responded to fundamental economic transition. The studies embrace all aspects of the regulatory process, from developing ideas on the economy, to the passage of legislation, and to the negotiation of economic policy and change in practice. The book challenges the general characterization of the period as a shift from a regulated economy to a more laissez-faire system, highlighting the uncertain but significant relationship between the state and economic interests across the long eighteenth century.

Book Britain s Political Economies

Download or read book Britain s Political Economies written by Julian Hoppit and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Glorious Revolution of 1688–9 transformed the role of parliament in Britain and its empire. Large numbers of statutes resulted, with most concerning economic activity. Julian Hoppit here provides the first comprehensive account of these acts, revealing how government affected economic life in this critical period prior to the Industrial Revolution, and how economic interests across Britain used legislative authority for their own benefit. Through a series of case studies, he shows how ideas, interests, and information influenced statutory action in practice. Existing frameworks such as 'mercantilism' and the 'fiscal-military state' fail to capture the full richness and structural limitations of how political power influenced Britain's precocious economic development in the period. Instead, finely grained statutory action was the norm, guided more by present needs than any grand plan, with regulatory ambitions constrained by administrative limitations, and some parts of Britain benefiting much more than others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was the role of elected legislators? Was it to represent the opinions of constituents or to vote according to their informed opinions reflecting the needs of the kingdom? Most authorities have accepted Edmund Burke's depiction of 18th-century MPs, insisting it was their right to form their opinions without reference to the instructions of constituents. This study provides answers to these important questions and, in doing so, reveals that Burke's vision does not represent how the House of Commons functioned during the last two decades of the 18th century. Rather than focusing on specific issues or demographic groups, English MPs brings to the fore the legislative activity of a broad segment of late 18th-century English MPs. This book shows they were diligent legislators who attended to the needs of constituents, in the process developing strong connections with them. It demonstrates that these connections did not rest on shared beliefs in reformist ideologies except in, and around, the metropolis. Instead, they grew out of the members' timely and effective tending, session after session, to the host of measures brought forward by constituents and neighbours. McCahill explores, in fascinating detail, the consequences of this bond. In this book, McCahill draws from an impressive array of primary sources and secondary literature to combine a structural analysis with broad surveys and detailed case-studies. The result is an illuminating and a comprehensive account of the House of Commons between 1760 and 1790.
