Book Interpreting the Middle East

Download or read book Interpreting the Middle East written by David Sorenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary approaches to comparative studies of the Middle East increasingly recognize how globalization and regional mass communication have blurred differences across countries. Populations travel across national borders and compare narratives about political change, economic futures, and the role of the outside world in shaping their lives. Organized by five principal themes of a regional overview, politics, economic development, social context, and international issues, Interpreting the Middle East provides a vibrant introduction to the Middle East that is compatible with this regionalist perspective. Invited authorities contribute insightful and accessible original discussions of central headline-fresh issues such as the aftermath of the Iraq war, Iran's regional ambitions, developments in the Israeli'Palestinian conflict, and the global politics of Middle East oil, gender, and religion. Section introductions by the editor integrate the contributions, and suggested readings, a glossary, and a biographical list of key persons provide helpful guidance for readers.

This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Modernization and the Crisis of Development in Africa

Download or read book Modernization and the Crisis of Development in Africa written by Jeremiah I. Dibua and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jeremiah I. Dibua challenges prevailing notions of Africa's development crisis by drawing attention to the role of modernization as a way of understanding the nature and dynamics of the crisis, and how to overcome the problem of underdevelopment. He specifically focuses on Nigeria and its development trajectory since it exemplifies the crisis of underdevelopment in the continent. He explores various theoretical and empirical issues involved in understanding the crisis, including state, class, gender and culture, often neglected in analysis, from an interdisciplinary, radical political economy perspective. This is the first book to adopt such an approach and to develop a new framework for analyzing Nigeria's and Africa's development crisis. It will influence the debate on the development dilemma of African and Third World societies and will be of interest to scholars and students of race and ethnicity, modern African history, class analysis, gender studies, and development studies.

Book Hybridity in Contemporary Commercial Organizations

Download or read book Hybridity in Contemporary Commercial Organizations written by Ijeoma Jacklyn Okpanum and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Times of extensive institutional pressure challenge the existence of commercial organizations as entities that reproduce a single coherent market-orientated institutional template to achieve effectiveness. In tune with pressure from changing markets, contemporary commercial organizations adopt various combinations of skills, templates, and processes for new sources of competitive advantage. At a conceptual level, hybridity embraces the notion that organizations may embody multiple templates, logics or values to achieve effective organizational performance. However, at a practical level, hybridity presents tensions, inconsistencies and contradictions for these organizations; a state of affairs that could have adverse negative consequences for employees’ behaviour and trust in the organization. This book offers an exploration of individual-level responses to logics multiplicity for all those interested in the future of commercial organizations.

Book The Management of Urban Development in Zambia

Download or read book The Management of Urban Development in Zambia written by Emmanuel Mutale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, the developing world has seen unprecendented urban growth and urban areas have had to deal with a number of complex problems as a result. While population growth is one of the factors contributing to the deprivation and decay characteristic of most urban areas in the developing world, there are other factors. Apart from demographic and economic factors, the political organization factor of centralization has concentrated decision-making and with it resources in the urban areas, leading to further rural-urban migration. Another factor is one of colonialism. The transfer of foreign social structures and technology, while offering alternatives, has dislocated and significantly altered indigenous patterns of development in the developing world. This book examines a region where this last factor is a major significance; Zambia's copperbelt. Here, the concentration of towns which were developed very rapidly in the 1930s made Zambia one of the most highly urbanized Sub-Saharan countries. By focusing on copperbelt towns, the book provides a critical analysis of the development of urban policy in Zambia. Aspects of conflict and cooperation between different interest groups and - where relevant - their economic relationships are explored and a structural conflict model of urban management is proposed. The book concludes that, with proper management, existing and emerging sectional interests in urban areas can help provide conditions which foster the formulation of equitable urban policy. Although focused on Zambia, the proposed structural conflict approach has potential for wider application.
