Book Challenges to Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Challenges to Marine Ecosystems written by John Davenport and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a representative sample of contributions to the 41st European Marine Biology Symposium held in September 2005 in Cork, Ireland. The theme of the symposium was ‘Challenges to Marine Ecosystems’ and this was divided into four sub themes; Genetics, Marine Protected Areas, Global Climate Change and Marine Ecosystems, Sustainable Fisheries and Agriculture. The world’s marine ecosystems face multiple challenges, some natural, but many resulting from humankind’s activities. Global climate change, driven by influences of energy usage and industrial practices, is a reality now accepted by most of the world’s scientists, media and political establishments. Warming seas and rising sea levels are regarded as threats, while visionaries consider deep ocean carbon disposal as a technological opportunity. Exploitation of the seas continues apace, with repeated concerns over the impact of over-fishing, plus reservations about the environmental effects of marine aquaculture. We need to understand how resilient organisms and ecosystems are to these challenges, while responding by protecting biologically-meaningful areas of the oceans. The subthemes of the 41st European Marine Biology Symposium address all of these matters.

Book Proceedings of the Nineteenth European Marine Biology Symposium

Download or read book Proceedings of the Nineteenth European Marine Biology Symposium written by P. E. Gibbs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-10-24 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These edited proceedings, first published in 1985, provide a thematic review of four important areas of marine biology. The theme of the first part of the volume is production at boundary systems and in particular it deals with rates of production and related processes at boundary systems, including shelf breaks, thermoclines and the fronts between stratified and mixed waters and the contribution of the production of such systems to the overall productivity of a region. The second part look sat the dynamics of deep-sea life: new techniques of and results from direct observation, in situ experimentation and sampling, especially those concerning rates and processes in the deep sea. The third part examines concepts of community organisation in the benthos: theoretical and empirical studies that synthesise the structural and functional properties of benthic communities. The final section on adaptive relevance of variability in biochemical and physiological processes, with particular emphasis on relationships between population genetics and physiological and biochemical ecology.

Book Life at Interfaces and Under Extreme Conditions

Download or read book Life at Interfaces and Under Extreme Conditions written by Gerd Liebezeit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfaces between media, whether air-water or sediment-water interfaces or organisms themselves, pose considerable problems to marine organisms attempting to live at these boundaries. In the present volume, a number of authors address various aspects of these two topics. Locations under scrutiny range from intertidal areas to the deep sea, while both macro-and meiofaunal organisms are investigated. Distribution patterns and effects of variable temperatures, pressures, and salinities are analysed. Aspects of fouling induction and prevention are also addressed. This book is intended as a progress report from the 33rd European Marine Biology Symposium held in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, in September 1998.

Download or read book Marine Biodiversity written by H. Queiroga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the four sub-themes of the 38th European Marine Biology Symposium. These are patterns and processes, assessment, threats and management and conservation. Understanding the functioning of marine ecosystems is the first step towards measuring and predicting the influence of Man, and to finding solutions for the enormous array of problems we face today. The papers in this book represent current research and concerns about Marine Biodiversity in Europe.

Download or read book Zoology written by P. Spencer Davies and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Experimental Biology, Volume 1: Zoology contains the proceedings of the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the Society for Experimental Biology, held at the University of Cambridge, UK, on July 16-19, 1974. The papers explore research in zoology and cover a wide range of topics such as osmotic and ionic regulation; invertebrate and insect physiology; respiratory physiology; and cell chemistry. Comprised of 43 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the history of the Society for Experimental Biology, followed by a discussion on calcium metabolism and acid-base balance in Helix pomatia. Subsequent chapters explore water movement in cells and tissues; ion transport and osmoregulation in marine fish; hormonal control of reproduction in cephalopods; and how hormones affect flight in the locust. Other sections focus on the temperature dependence of the respiratory activity of mitochondria; biochemical mechanisms of tissue injury; laser light scattering from nerve and motile cells; transmitter release from insect motoneurons; and neural consequences of early experience in birds. The final section is devoted to animal locomotion and includes chapters that address undulatory swimming in polychaetes and energy storage in jumping animals. This book is intended for research workers and undergraduates interested in experimental biology.

Book Biology of Benthic Organisms

Download or read book Biology of Benthic Organisms written by B. F. Keegan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Benthic Organisms contains papers presented at the 11th European Symposium on Marine Biology, held at Galway, Ireland in October 1976.
