Book A Natural Language and Graphics Interface

Download or read book A Natural Language and Graphics Interface written by Gabriel G. Bes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents important results from the ESPRIT Project 393 "Construction and Interrogation of Knowledge Bases Using Natural Language Text and Graphics" (ACORD). The project involved more than fifty people overfive years, and included industrial and academic partners from three countries. The main result of the project is a highly sophisticated human-machine interface allowing the construction and interrogation of a common knowledge base in English, French, and German, using both natural language and graphics. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the project. Chapters 2-4 develop specific issues concerning thegrammar models used (functional grammars and unification categorial grammars). Chapter 5 discusses anaphora resolution and Chapter 6 text generation. Chapter 7 explains the integration of text and graphics, and Chapter 8 discusses the knowledge base module. The contributions are theoretically oriented and strongly concerned with generalization and the underlying background of potential further developments.

Book The Humanities Computing Yearbook 1989 1990

Download or read book The Humanities Computing Yearbook 1989 1990 written by Ian Lancashire and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second in a series of comprehensive annual reference guides to the use of computers in all the disciplines of the humanities. Like its predecessor, this volume provides a taxonomy of the field and an annotated survey of publications, research centers, text archives and termbanks, electronic communications, software, and hardware relevant to the humanities. It also includes special larger entries for important software that offer up-to-date information, and practical help in applying that information to research projects and instruction in colleges and universities. For the 1989-1990 edition, Lancashire has, for the first time, appointed an international advisory board of specialists to assist in discovering, assembling, and evaluating materials for inclusion; and, to keep up with the rapidly developing nature of the field and its international constituency, Lancashire has included many completely new or revised sections, including a major new chapter on computing in Law. A monumental work of current and enduring value, The Humanities Computing Yearbook will prove invaluable to a wide range of students, teachers, and researchers in humanities and social sciences, computational linguistics, and related fields in computer science.

Book Dictionaries An International Encyclopedia of Lexicography

This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 1596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basis for this additional volume are the three volumes of the handbooks Dictionaries. An International Encyclopedia of Lexicography (HSK 5.1–5.3), published between 1989 and 1991. In the present Supplementary Volume the premises and subjects of HSK 5.1–5.3 are complemented by new articles that take account of the practice-internal and theoretical developments of the last 15 years. Special attention has been given to the following topics: the status and function of lexicographic reference works, the history of lexicography, the theory of lexicography, lexicographic processes, lexicographic training and lexicographic institutions, new metalexicographic methods, electronic and, especially, computer-assisted lexicography.

Book Computers in Translation

Download or read book Computers in Translation written by John Newton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have been attempting to develop systems that would emulate the human translation process for some forty years. What is it about human language that makes this such a daunting challenge? While other software packages have achieved rapid and lasting success, machine translation has failed to penetrate the worldwide market to any appreciable extent. Does this merely reflect a reluctance to adopt it, or does it signal a more fundamental and intractable problem? Computers in Translation is a comprehensive guide to the practical issues surrounding machine translation and computer-based translation tools. Translators, system designers, system operators and researchers present the facts about machine translation: its history, its successes, its limitations and its potential. Three chapters deal with actual machine translation applications, discussing installations including the METEO system, used in Canada to translate weather forecasts and weather reports, and the system used in the Foreign Technology Division of the US Air Force.
