Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Annual Report of the Charles River Basin Commission: December 1, 1906 Four hundred thousand cubic yards of dredging have been done in the Basin and in the canals. Work has been started upon the lowering of pipes, to prevent interference with navigation in the canals. A cotter-dam, enclosing about acres of what was once the bottom of Charles River, has been constructed, and in it has been built the masonry work for many of the permanent hydraulic appurtenances of the Dam and the Boston Marginal Conduit, besides a Lock 490 feet long (which includes a draw at the lower end), 45 feet wide, and 27 feet deep at mean high tide. This has been known as the Boston Coffer-dam. Rfig. 1 shows the pile foundations for the structures to be built within the Boston coffer-dam. Fig. 2 shows the masonry construction within the Boston coffer-dam. In a smaller coffer - dam on the other side of the river, known as the Cambridge Coffer - dam, nine Sluices have been erected. The middle sluice of this series has been arranged to serve a double purpose, so that when not in use as a sluice it may be operated as a lock for small boats which do not require so much head-room as to prevent their passage under the road way, which will be at a level of 21 feet above mean low-water mark.
