Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourteenth Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England Until the census of 18 51 had been taken, the rates of marriage, birth, and of mortality were necessarily calculated on the population returns of 1841 raised, as the population was known to be increasing, in the pro portion inferred from the rate that had been found to prevail between 1831 and 1841. We now learn from the census that the population after the year 1841 was overstated to a slight extent by this assumption; the population of England and Wales increased rather faster in the ten years 1831 - 41 than it did in the ten years 1841-51, when emigration became more active; for the annual rate of increase of the population at home and abroad was 1 326 in the former, 1 216 per cent. In the latter period. The population at home in England and Wales, or exclusive of the por tion of the army, navy, and merchant seamen abroad, in the middle of the years 1841 and 18 51 was and and therefore, upon the hypothesis that the increase was uniformly in a geometrical ratio, the annual rate of increase was 122o. The rate of increase in the years 1838, 1839, 1840, was taken to be 1' 326; the exact proportion of the population at home in 183 1 not having been determined. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirteenth Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England, 1854 The Quakers attended to the number of at their 371 places of worship, containing sittings, on the Census Sunday (march 3oth, 1851) but in the year 1850 only 138 of the Friends married according to their own form's, so that there is still an unusual reluctance to marry among the male or female members of this remarkable sect, which, if it is neither sustained by hereditary accessions nor proselytes, will eventually decline in England. The Jews present quite a different aspect; they marry in considerable numbers (520 were married in 18 50) but the number who attended their synagogues on Saturday was 'only 4150; so that there was one Jew married to every 8 who attended. Marriage appears to be common, but polygamy, though it is allowed by the law of Moses, is, I am informed, not practised by the J ews in any country of Europe except Turkey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeenth Annual Report of the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England In the Scorn eastern tstos (il) the health of the people was various. Amongst its five counties iiumpshire was rather unfortunate, its deaths risi to age, which, though not remarkably in excess, is more than in an of the our corresponding quarters. Southampton, which had been fatally visited y small-pox in the early part of the year, continued to suffer from this distemper, which recently, however, has abated. At Kingston, in the same county, and Landport the disease showed no abatement in the last quarter; while scarlatina and typhus prevailed in the former place, and low fever was common at Newport in the Isle of Wight. Kent and Berkshire enjoyed more than usual exemption from fatal disease. The number of deaths in the second division was 7984; a great reduction on the unhealthy spring of I853; but the return is not very satisfactory as compared with those of ordinary years. The south aaxn division lost 6236 lives, the number of deaths in the same quarter of the previous year having been 6795. The mortality was low in the county of Hertford and partsof Cambridge: rather high in Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire. 'i'ypltus had broken out in the parishes of Westbury and Finmere in Northampton, and had drawn attention to the necessity of cleansing Operations. At Crowland, in the same county, smallcpox was prevalent, owing to the neglect of vaccination. This disease attacked also Luton and various other points in Bedford, and not without much severity. Intermittent fever was very general in the Sutton sub-district Of Ely. In Cambridgeshire. Speaking of Whittlc any, the Registrar says: For a fen district this may be considered healthy. Some years ago the parishioners filled up all the muddy ditches in the town. Paved all the streets, gravelled all the roads, and made brick drains and cesso pools where most required.
