Adams first began to write at the age of 28, and his first book, Hatchie, the Guardian Slave (1853), was published under the pseudonym of Warren T. Ashton. It was only a modest success, but Adams was undaunted. In 1854 Adams produced his first real hit, the initial volume in the Boat Club series. Among his best-known works were the two "Blue and Gray" series, which were set during the Civil War. Adams wrote well over 100 books in total, most of them for a boy audience, and the majority of these in series of four to six volumes.

When the young millionaire and his three companions of about his own age, with a chosen list of near and dear friends, had made the voyage "Half Round the World," the volume with this title left them all at Sarawak in the island of Borneo. The four young explorers, as they became, were permitted to spend three weeks there hunting, fishing, and ascending some of the rivers, while the rest of the party proceeded in the Guardian-Mother to Siam. The younger members of the ship's company believed they had seen enough of temples, palaces, and fine gardens in the great cities of the East, and desired to live a wilder life for a brief period.

Files reveals more chilling details surrounding the events that led up to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Readers who are new to the story, as well as seasoned skeptics of the Warren Commission, can follow along as Files recounts the details from the original plot to kill JFK in Chicago to the dark deed done in Dallas November 22, 1963. On that day, the United States of America experienced a coup d'état where the 35th president was taken down in a military-style ambush by the Central Intelligence Agency using Organized Crime hit men as their assassins. Only a few people are still alive who were there that day and this is the story from the man who fired the fatal headshot from the infamous grassy knoll. While James Files was incarcerated for the last 25 years, author Pamela Ray published two books he asked her to write; TO KILL A COUNTRY and Interview with History: The JFK Assassination. On the website for the book Interview with History, a Question and Answer blog was created in 2013 for the public to ask James Files questions. Included in this book is the Q & A section that Files and Ray hope will satisfy readers regarding commonly asked questions and forever put to rest some of the basic facts surrounding his truly incredible and amazing story. Final Update: James Files is now a Christian and was baptized in Lake Michigan on June 14, 2018. James Files and Pamela Ray were married in May 2018 and live in Chicago. Book excerpt: Evoking two of the most famous battles of the Ancient World—the Battle of Marathon and the Last Stand at Thermopylae—The Gates of Athens is a bravura piece of storytelling by a well acclaimed master of the historical adventure novel. In the new epic historical novel by New York Times bestselling author Conn Iggulden, in ancient Greece an army of slaves gathers on the plains of Marathon . . . Under Darius the Great, King of Kings, the mighty Persian army—swollen by 10,000 warriors known as The Immortals—have come to subjugate the Greeks. In their path, vastly outnumbered, stands an army of freeborn Athenians. Among them is a clever, fearsome, and cunning soldier-statesman, Xanthippus. Against all odds, the Athenians emerge victorious. Yet people soon forget that freedom is bought with blood. Ten years later, Xanthippus watches helplessly as Athens succumbs to the bitter politics of factionalism. Traitors and exiles abound. Trust is at a low ebb when the Persians cross the Hellespont in ever greater numbers in their second attempt to raze Athens to the ground. Facing overwhelming forces by land and sea, the Athenians call on their Spartan allies for assistance—to delay the Persians at the treacherous pass of Thermopylae . . .
