Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Years in the Underbrush: Adventures as a Working Woman in New York When the opportunity presented itself on the above mentioned date my reason for accepting it was for the Single purpose of getting material for my novel - not because of any Special interest in working people, either men or women, as a class. Indeed, it had always been my faith that they who scrub floors or dig ditches are only fit to scrub floors or dig ditches - humanity, like water, finds its own level. The clock over the main entrance of the Grand Central Station was on the stroke of twelve when I passed under it on my way to the woman's waiting-room. Glancing around to select the most desirable of the unoccupied chairs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Four Years in the Underbrush: Adventures as a working woman in New York', is the anonymously-written novel about a woman who went undercover in the domestic service, in New York. She wanted to gather firsthand experience as to what it would be like working minimum wage jobs, such as restaurant staff or working in a candy factory, as she was researching for her book. Her protagonist would be working in such jobs, and she wanted her writing to be as realistic as possible. This led to the writer spending four years (1916-1920), working low-end jobs, and living in rented units or tenement buildings, and meeting a vast array of struggling New Yorkers who were trying to pay for rising food costs and household bills during the Great War, and also post-war during the tail-end of her research stint. She met people from all walks of life, and from many different countries, many of them who had immigrated into New York, seeking a better life.

Book Four Years With The Iron Brigade

Download or read book Four Years With The Iron Brigade written by Lance Herdegen and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recently discovered journal of William Ray of the Seventh Wisconsin is the most important primary source ever of soldier life in one of the war's most famous fighting organizations. No other collection of letters or diaries comes close to it.Two days before his regiment left Wisconsin in 1861, the twenty-three-year-old blacksmith began, as he described it, "to keep account" of his life in what became the "Iron Brigade of the West." Ray's journal encompasses all aspects of the enlisted man's life-the battles, the hardships, the comradeship. And Ray saw most of the war from the front rank. He was wounded at Second Bull Run, again at Gettysburg, and yet a third time in the hell of the Wilderness. He penned something in his journal almost every day-occasionally just a few lines, at other times thousands of words. Ray's candid assessments of officers and strategy, his vivid descriptions of marches and the fighting, and his evocative tales of foraging and daily army life fill a large gap in the historical record and give an unforgettable soldier's-eye view of the Civil War.

Book Give Us Bread but Give Us Roses

Download or read book Give Us Bread but Give Us Roses written by Sarah Eisenstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in the printed sources of the period, this book reconstructs the attitudes of a pioneer generation of young women to the conflicts brought about by their new experience of employment outside their homes, and to changes in work and family relationships. In the 1890s and after the still prevalent Victorian conception of respectable womanhood excluded wage-earning women. Yet working-class women themselves did not acquiesce in this judgement, and Eisenstein’s exploration of Victorian ideas about women and work – using the contemporary middle-class literature of advice and prescription to this new workforce – makes a historical study which is a classic of its kind. The book was originally published in 1983.
