Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I was no secessionist, and hoped the trouble would be settled without recourse to arms; but when the war came I shouldered my musket in behalf of my native State and defended her to the last." As a commander in Stonewall Jackson's brigade, John Casler experienced all the horrors and comedy of the American Civil War. His time was not so different from his countrymen on the other side, with the exception of point of view. He buried more than one good friend. "I saw my friend, William I. Blue, lying on his face, dead. I sat down by him and took a hearty cry, and then, thinks I, “It does not look well for a soldier to cry,” but I could not help it. While I was at work a Georgian came to me and wanted the tools as soon as I was done with them. He said he wanted to bury his brother, and asked if I was burying a brother. 'No,' I replied, 'but dear as a brother.'” (New Intro, Annotated) Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Download or read book Sketches of the Life of Captain Hugh A White of the Stonewall Brigade Classic Reprint written by William S. White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Life of Captain Hugh A. White, of the Stonewall Brigade The next time the writer saw him was upon the glorious field of Manassas, where the young volunteer had just covered himself with honor by his brilliant courage. In the gray jacket of the private he was the same modest, gentle, graceful, and unobtrusive stripling. Again we met in the glorious campaign of the Valley, in 1862, when he had become the captain of the Liberty Hall Volunteers. He appeared a little more bronzed and robust, but in everything else he was the same. Yet in all the responsibilities of discipline and danger, the sweet boy-man shone forth, full of nerve, energy, and heroism. The writer can also testify, from his own observation, to the elevated consistency and heavenly mindedness of his christian character in the camp. Book First Fallen

Download or read book First Fallen written by Meg Groeling and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “well-written, superbly researched” biography of the man who answered the call of his mentor, Abraham Lincoln, and became the first Union officer to die (Civil War News). On May 24, 1861, Col. Elmer Ellsworth became the first Union officer killed in the Civil War. The entire North was aghast. This is the first modern biography of this nineteenth-century celebrity and mostly forgotten national hero. Ellsworth and his entertaining U.S. Zouave Cadets drill team had performed at West Point, in New York City, and for President James Buchanan before returning home to Chicago. He helped his friend and law mentor Abraham Lincoln in his quest for the presidency, and when Lincoln put out the call for troops after Fort Sumter was fired upon, Ellsworth responded. Within days he organized more than a thousand New York firefighters into a regiment of volunteers. When he was killed, the Lincolns rushed to the Navy Yard to view the body of the young man they had loved as a son. Mary Lincoln insisted he lie in state in the East Room of the White House. The elite of New York brought flowers to the Astor House and six members of the 11th New York accompanied their commander’s coffin. When a late May afternoon thunderstorm erupted during his funeral service at the Hudson View Cemetery, eyewitnesses referred to it as “tears from God himself.” But the death of the young hero was knocked out of the headlines eight weeks later by the battle of First Bull Run. The trickle of blood had now become a torrent that would not stop for four long years. Meg Groeling’s biography is grounded in years of archival research and includes diaries, personal letters, newspapers, and many other accounts. In the six decades since the last portrait of Ellsworth was written, new information has been found that provides a better understanding of the Ellsworth phenomenon and his deep connections to the Lincoln family. First Fallen examines every facet of Ellsworth’s complex, fascinating life and adds richly to the historiography of the Civil War. “Poignant . . . Groeling makes it clear why Lincoln was so powerfully drawn to the magnetic young man.” —Michael Burlingame, author of An American Marriage: The Untold Story of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Includes maps and photos

This book was released on 2003-11-20 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the Shenandoah Valley campaign, best known for its role in establishing Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's reputation as the Confederacy's greatest military idol. The authors address questions of military leadership, strategy and tactics, the campaign's political and social impact, and the ways in which participants' memories of events differed from what is revealed in the historical sources.
