Book Three Years in the Saddle 1861 1865 Abridged Annotated

Download or read book Three Years in the Saddle 1861 1865 Abridged Annotated written by Charles D. Field and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the charms of Charles Field's account of his time as a Union soldier in the American Civil War is its utter simplicity. He was a typical soldier, a non-commissioned officer, of limited education. His phrasing and misspellings, for some reason printed in the original manuscript, lend an authenticity to his stories. Field saw plenty of action, had hair-raising close calls, and lived to tell about it in this 1908 publication. After the war, he married, raised a family, and farmed in Illinois and Iowa. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. Book Partisan Life with Mosby s Rangers Abridged Annotated

Download or read book Partisan Life with Mosby s Rangers Abridged Annotated written by Major John Scott and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Singleton Mosby's Rangers bedeviled the Union army for four long years. The Rangers were what we would today call guerillas; units that could make fast raids and get away before the enemy could react. This highly-successful unit became legendary during the war and continues to be an object of fascination by scholars and enthusiasts of the period into the 21st century. This is the official memoir of Mosby's command, written with his cooperation after the war. The author of this work, John Scott, wrote the Partisan Ranger Law in 1862. John Singleton Mosby was a remarkable individual. Highly intelligent, educated, and modest, he held the respect of many on both sides of the war. After the Civil War, he became a Republican and a supporter of Ulysses S. Grant. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. Download or read book A One Armed General in the Indian Wars Abridged Annotated written by Major General O. O. Howard and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a rare book of keen observation, respect, and in some instances even affection for Native Americans of his time. (It's a good bet his editor or the marketing department had something to do with the language.) General Oliver O. Howard commanded Union forces in the American Civil War and lost his right arm at the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1862. After recovery, he continued in important commands, including the Army of the Tennessee. He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. For nine years after the Civil War, he was commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau and worked to integrate free African Americans into southern society. Howard was also a leader in promoting higher education for freedmen, most notably in founding of Howard University in Washington and serving as its president 1867–73. He accepted the surrender of the famous chief Joseph, and led campaigns and negotiations with an astonishing number of the western tribes. No student of the Indian Wars in the United States should miss reading this book. Book excerpt: A FORGOTTEN TREASURE--CIVIL WAR IN THE SADDLE Just a boy when he enlisted in the Union cause, Walter Robbins was not quite 23 years old when he mustered out as a colonel (brevet brigadier general) after more than four years of war. It was an experience that shaped the rest of his life. Written for his grandchildren, this book was not intended for publication. Yet it brims with excitement and detailed accounts of participation in some of the most famous battles of the war. Robbins served in proximity to the Union's most prominent leaders, saw them in action, and was praised by them for his leadership. The 1st New Jersey Cavalry fought at Cedar Mountain, Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Hawe's Shop, and other battles right up to Appomattox. This is a long-lost and forgotten treasure of the great conflict that nearly destroyed the nation. Thoughtful, modest, and proud of his part in the cause, Walter Raleigh Robbins' memoir will interest every student of the Civil War.

Book Analysis and Interpretation of Range Images

Download or read book Analysis and Interpretation of Range Images written by Ramesh C. Jain and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer vision researchers have been frustrated in their attempts to automatically derive depth information from conventional two-dimensional intensity images. Research on "shape from texture", "shape from shading", and "shape from focus" is still in a laboratory stage and had not seen much use in commercial machine vision systems. A range image or a depth map contains explicit information about the distance from the sensor to the object surfaces within the field of view in the scene. Information about "surface geometry" which is important for, say, three-dimensional object recognition is more easily extracted from "2 1/2 D" range images than from "2D" intensity images. As a result, both active sensors such as laser range finders and passive techniques such as multi-camera stereo vision are being increasingly utilized by vision researchers to solve a variety of problems. This book contains chapters written by distinguished computer vision researchers covering the following areas: Overview of 3D Vision Range Sensing Geometric Processing Object Recognition Navigation Inspection Multisensor Fusion A workshop report, written by the editors, also appears in the book. It summarizes the state of the art and proposes future research directions in range image sensing, processing, interpretation, and applications. The book also contains an extensive, up-to-date bibliography on the above topics. This book provides a unique perspective on the problem of three-dimensional sensing and processing; it is the only comprehensive collection of papers devoted to range images. Both academic researchers interested in research issues in 3D vision and industrial engineers in search of solutions to particular problems will find this a useful reference book.

Book Don Quixote s Impossible Dream

Download or read book Don Quixote s Impossible Dream written by David P. Grzan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adventures of Don Quixote, the famous knight errant, and his lady-love, Dulcinea del Toboso that Miguel de Cervantes portrays in his epic novel, "The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha"; and made more famous by countless adaptations featured in movies and theatrical musical productions of that singular masterpiece reflective of the human condition has captured the imagination of generations throughout the world. "Don Quixote's Impossible Dream: To Everyman His Dulcinea", by David P. Grzan, has elevated the notion of chivalric love, in the fairest terms, which Don Quixote advanced to the honor and esteem of Dulcinea, his true love, the quest of his impossible dream. Love, the most powerful force in the universe, has been the primary inspiration that has propelled all the Don Quixote's, known and unknown that have ever lived, in their attempt to accomplish great deeds in the name of their particular Dulcinea. This epic poem immortalizes the triumphs, tragedies, obstacles, struggles and courage that can accompany and at other times can thwart the greatest of all prizes, love, in the context of the infinite profoundness and complexity of the human dynamic, which is sublimely represented and exemplified by the relationship between Don Quixote and Dulcinea.
