Book Four Years in Ashantee Classic Reprint

Download or read book Four Years in Ashantee Classic Reprint written by Friedrich August Ramseyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Years in Ashantee From the earliest ages onward, the Christian Church at large has ever bestowed the warmest sympathy and the most grateful attention on the history of her martyrs. And well she may do so, for have they not acted as the pioneers of Christ's advancing kingdom, presenting in their example a standing embodiment of the victory of Christian faith and patience over the world? Nor has the Protestant Church, for her part, been without the witness of numerous martyrs from the era of her first struggles for existence, down to the history of her missions in modern times. And though we do not idolize these martyrs, lest we should detract from the glory of the only Mediator and incomparable Martyr of Golgotha; yet we honour their memory, and we look upon their sufferings and conquests as pledges for that universal triumph of the gospel, which shall eventually be brought about. True, a Church whose foundation was laid by the Crucified, must ever remain a cross-bearing Church: amidst much of strife and tribulation, under the pressure of constant trial, her members must grow and increase, till the day arrive when the first holy cross-bearer, Jesus Christ her Lord and Head, shall appear in glory and deliver His suffering Bride from all evil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Ashantee Campaign The next time I saw a stone implement was in the tent of Mr. Kiihne, at Prahsu. He had found it on an Ashantee altar, or shrine, as he was on his way from Coomassie to the camp. I asked my interpreter if he had ever seen one before; he replied they were found everywhere, ' and I made a small collection during the march through Ashantee. When the troops took a village, I always hunted for this kind of plunder. Sometimes I found the stone hanging before doorways at the end of a string, like a plummet, and Often it would be daubed over with chalk. The natives re gard these stones with superstitious reverence, call them God-axes, and believing that all things sacred are medicinal, grind from them a powder which they use for rheumatism and other complaints. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Fanteeland to Coomassie: A Diary of the Ashantee Expedition If anywhere, in this work or in my published letters, I have offended the feelings of a single officer of the expedition, I beg of him to believe that it is done unwittingly. A wilful hurt would be the most ungrateful return for unvaried courtesy on the part of all with whom I was brought into contact. It remains for me only to render thanks to the proprietors of the Daily Telegraph, ' who have kindly allowed me to incorporate in my story such parts of my letters to them as seemed appropriate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kabul to Kumassi: Twenty-Four Years of Soldiering and Sport "Often have I sighed to measure By myself a lonely pleasure, Sighed to think I read a book, Only read, perhaps, by me." Wordsworth. It has been my good fortune during my twenty-four years in the Army not only to have been constantly employed on Active Service but to have seen that service in many lands. I have, moreover, had rare opportunities of travelling off the beaten track in countries where big game shooting was plentiful, and have in consequence been able to indulge in that noble sport at the minimum of cost. It is in the hope that the story of these events may prove of interest to a few of my countrymen and, possibly, bring more clearly before them some still little-known portions of our vast Empire, that I have ventured to write this book. If by doing so I may succeed in bringing into the ranks of His Majesty's Army even one good recruit I shall not have written altogether in vain. The illustrations have been drawn chiefly from my own descriptions, aided in a few cases by photographs or sketches, and those of big game shooting and fighting in Burmah or Ashanti portray the scenes exactly as they appeared to me at the time. Book Hebrewisms of West Africa

  • Author : Joseph J. Williams
  • Publisher : Black Classic Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9781580730037

Download or read book Hebrewisms of West Africa written by Joseph J. Williams and published by Black Classic Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this massive work, Joseph J. Williams documents the Hebraic practices, customs, and beliefs, which he found among the people of Jamaica and the Ashanti of West Africa. He initially examines the close relationship between the Jamaican and the Ashanti cultures and the folk beliefs. He then studies the language and culture of the Ashanti (of whom many Jamaicans have descended) by comparing them to well known and established Hebraic traditions. William's findings suggest stunning similarities. And, he challenges the reader by concluding that Hebraic traditions must have swept across "negro Africa" and left its influence "among the various tribes." While Williams presents a strong case, his evidence, including hundreds of quoted sources, also builds a strong case for the reverse--that an indigenous, continent-wide belief system among African people stands at the very root of Hebrew culture and Western religion. First published in 1931 and long out-of-print, today's reader will find Hebrewisms a valuable resource for understanding the cultural unity of African people.
