Book excerpt: I am very happy to introduce to the readers the poems of Hari. His background is from the eastern hemisphere of the globe, in a place which is still in need of major development with regard to rights of its people. His home is in a place which is highly populated and dense; yet his life is starkly unpopulated, because of his differences in the way he relates to other people. His real name is not Hari, and he has good reasons to use a different one, given the sociopolitical and cultural realities of his native place. Even though Hari's first language isn't English, he displays commendable skills in the language, and takes us through his perceptions of his world, which perhaps should have been found more of its place in our world too. When I met Hari, he was a part-time photographer in a small town, besides being a farmer in the small land he possessed. He didn't have much acquaintances in our small community, and he seemed left alone in the human race, akin to an island. He had written many poems, and tagged them to his photographs. Hari's vision, as he told me, was to create a greater space for himself and people of his kind in the society, which he felt was too boxed in with stereotypical roles. Keeping that in mind, we finally settled on the title, 'FOUR PINK WALLS', which is also the first poem in this book. The poems, to my rather untrained eye, seem to carry a dark undertone, but many peak with positivity at the end. The photographs relate to the picture often directly, but sometimes things are rather abstract. In the former case, even though the poems describe the picture, there is an unfolding of the deeper layers underneath, which perhaps conjoins the realm of the conscious poetry writing and the unconscious forces wanting to express themselves.
