Book excerpt: "Blessed Bread - Four anthems for Communion by Margaret Rizza This collection of four anthems for communion is made up of two very simple anthems with words by David Adam and two chants which can be used in many different ways according to the changeable time that is needed for communion and for the resources of the choir. Margaret says: ‘Chants are so easy to perform and also lovely to sing and to work at. Through the repetitions, a chant starts in the head with all its thinking and begins the long journey into the heart. There one begins to be open to the beauty of prayer, and drawn into deeper levels of reflection and stillness. Singing chants is a wonderful way to share, as we come to celebrate the Eucharist together.’ Contents1. Blessed Bread (words by the composer, based on the Eucharist)2. The real presence (words by David Adam from 'The Edge of Glory')3. Dedication (words by David Adam from 'The Edge of Glory')4. Lord, all truth is from you (words from the Weekday Missal Week XXI)"

Book The Use of Chorale in the Motets of Johannes Brahms

Download or read book The Use of Chorale in the Motets of Johannes Brahms written by Marcela Molina and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document examines the chorale settings found in the motets of Johannes Brahms in order to illustrate how Brahms draws upon the chorale settings of Bach's motets and cantatas. By incorporating progressive nineteenth-century idioms into the chorales of his motets, Brahms not only referenced Bach's works, but also further developed the motet genre. I will demonstrate, through the approach ofplurality of musical languages, that Brahms's use of chorales in his motets, while referencing Bach's motet and cantata models, creates a new motet style that is distinctively Brahms's. The four motets included in this study due to their use of chorale are "Es ist das Heil uns kommen her," op. 29, no. 1; "Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen," op. 74, no. 1; "O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf," op. 74, no. 2; and "Ach, arme Welt," op. 110, no. 2.

Book excerpt: "Choral Repertoire is the definitive and comprehensive one-volume presentation of the most significant composers and compositions of choral music from the Western Hemisphere throughout recorded history. The book is designed for multiple uses-as a programming guide for practicing conductors, instructional resource for students and teachers of choral music, historic and stylistic reference for choral singers, and source of information about composers and compositions for choral enthusiasts-and as such, the book intends to further and make accessible important information relevant to the vast scope of choral music. Organized by era (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Modern), Choral Repertoire covers general characteristics of each historical era, trends and styles unique to various countries, biographical sketches of more than six hundred composers, and performance annotations of more than five thousand individual works. Of the composers, there is substantive coverage of women and composers of color, and of the repertoire, there is inclusion of lesser-known works as well as those works that are considered standard"--
