Book excerpt: In this series of letters, an anonymous author offers a powerful critique of the British government's proposals for peace with revolutionary France. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This famed Payne edition of Select Works of Edmund Burke is universally revered by students of English history and political thought. Volume 3 presents Burke's Four Letters on the Proposals for Peace with the Regicide Directory of France--generally styled Letters on a Regicide Peace (1795-1796). The Letters, Payne believed, deserve to "rank even before [Burke's] Reflections, and to be called the writer's masterpiece." Faithfully reproduced in each volume are E. J. Payne's notes and introductory essays. Francis Canavan, one of the great Burke scholars of the twentieth century, has added forewords and a biographical note on Payne. Francis Canavan (1917-2009) was Professor of Political Science at Fordham University from 1966 until his retirement in 1988. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Third Letter to a Member of the Present Parliament on the Proposals for Peace With the Regicide Directory of France In the conclusion of Mr. Burke's second Letter on the Proposals of Peace, he threw out some intimation of the plan, which he meant to adopt in the sequel. A third Letter was mentioned by him, as having been then, in part, written. "He intended to proceed next on the question of the facilities possessed by the French Republick, from the internal State of Other Nations, and particularly of this, for obtaining her ends; and, as his notions were controverted, to take notice of what, in that way, had been recommended to him." But the abrupt and unprecedented conclusion of Lord Malmesbury's first negociation, induced him to make some change in the arrangement of his matter.
