Book Numerical Differential Equations Theory And Technique Ode Methods Finite Differences Finite Elements And Collocation

Download or read book Numerical Differential Equations Theory And Technique Ode Methods Finite Differences Finite Elements And Collocation written by John Loustau and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text presents numerical differential equations to graduate (doctoral) students. It includes the three standard approaches to numerical PDE, FDM, FEM and CM, and the two most common time stepping techniques, FDM and Runge-Kutta. We present both the numerical technique and the supporting theory. The applied techniques include those that arise in the present literature. The supporting mathematical theory includes the general convergence theory. This material should be readily accessible to students with basic knowledge of mathematical analysis, Lebesgue measure and the basics of Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces. Nevertheless, we have made the book free standing in most respects. Most importantly, the terminology is introduced, explained and developed as needed. The examples presented are taken from multiple vital application areas including finance, aerospace, mathematical biology and fluid mechanics. The text may be used as the basis for several distinct lecture courses or as a reference. For instance, this text will support a general applications course or an FEM course with theory and applications. The presentation of material is empirically-based as more and more is demanded of the reader as we progress through the material. By the end of the text, the level of detail is reminiscent of journal articles. Indeed, it is our intention that this material be used to launch a research career in numerical PDE.

Book The Intelligible Ode

Download or read book The Intelligible Ode written by Graham Davidson and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its first publication, what is now known as the Immortality Ode has been praised for the magnificence of its verse and disparaged for its paucity of meaning - the 'immortality' of the subtitle unsubstantiated, and the 'recollections' insubstantial. Yet Wordsworth's idea of immortality has clear precedents in the seventeenth century, and recollections of childhood are Traherne's starting point for the recovery of a lost vision comparable to Wordsworth's. Via the power of the imagination, or reason, they believed they could experience a renewed vision that both termed variously Paradise, or infinity, or immortality. Graham Davidson traces the origins of Wordsworth's poetic impetus to his resistance to the Cartesian division between mind and nature, first adumbrated by the Cambridge Platonists. If reunited, Paradise was regained, but this personal trajectory was tempered by a deep sympathy for the woes of mortal life. Davidson explores the consequent dialogue through some of Wordsworth's best-known poems, at the heart of which is the Ode. In the last section, he demonstrates how Wordsworth's publishing history led the Victorians and modernists to misinterpret his work; if one considers Eliot's Four Quartets as odes, facing several of the same problems as did Wordsworth, there is some irony in Eliot's dismissal of the Immortality Ode as 'verbiage'.

Book The Colossian Hymn in Context

Download or read book The Colossian Hymn in Context written by Matthew E. Gordley and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2007 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suggestion that the New Testament contains citations of early Christological hymns has long been a controversial issue in New Testament scholarship. As a way of advancing this facet of New Testament research, Matthew E. Gordley examines the Colossian hymn (Col 1:15-20) in light of its cultural and epistolary contexts. As a result of a broad comparative analysis, he claims that Col 1:15-20 is a citation of a prose-hymn which represents a fusion of Jewish and Greco-Roman conventions for praising an exalted figure. A review of hymns in the literature of Second Temple Judaism demonstrates that the Colossian hymn owes a number of features to Jewish modes of praise. Likewise, a review of hymns in the broader Greco-Roman world demonstrates that the Colossian hymn is equally indebted to conventions used for praising the divine in the Greco-Roman tradition. In light of these hymnic traditions of antiquity, the analysis of the form and content of the Colossian hymn shows how the passage fits well into a Greco-Roman context, and indicates that it is best understood as a quasi-philosophical prose-hymn cited in the context of a paraenetic letter. Finally, in view of ancient epistolary and rhetorical theory and practice, an analysis of the role of the hymn in Colossians suggests that the hymn serves a number of significant rhetorical functions throughout the remainder of the letter.
