Download or read book Looking for Longleaf written by Lawrence S. Earley and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering 92 million acres from Virginia to Texas, the longleaf pine ecosystem was, in its prime, one of the most extensive and biologically diverse ecosystems in North America. Today these magnificent forests have declined to a fraction of their original extent, threatening such species as the gopher tortoise, the red-cockaded woodpecker, and the Venus fly-trap. Lawrence S. Earley explores the history of these forests and the astonishing biodiversity within them, drawing on extensive research and telling the story through first-person travel accounts and interviews with foresters, ecologists, biologists, botanists, and landowners. The compelling story Earley tells here offers hope that with continued human commitment, the longleaf pine might not just survive, but once again thrive.

Book Mississippi River Country Tales

Download or read book Mississippi River Country Tales written by Jim Fraiser and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The people who live in towns and cities along the Mississippi River in the southern United States are a special breed, steeped in 500 years of history as rich as the coffee they drink, or the soil where once the river ran. Mississippi River Country Tales is a fast-paced, easy to read history that covers everything from the early conquistadors and the first Mardi Gras to Fannie Lou Hamer and Archie Manning, and covers the geographic region from Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and Louisiana. The book has received hearty praise from reviewers across the South: "[Mississippi River Country Tales] contains an incredible cast of real-life characters that would defy any writer of fiction to create lest they be perceived as too unbelievable. The book can do nothing but add to Jim Fraiser's growing reputation as another young Mississippi writer who knows how to tell stories about the places and people he knows best." --Biloxi Sun-Herald

Book Tracing Your Mississippi Ancestors

Download or read book Tracing Your Mississippi Ancestors written by Anne S. Lipscomb and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This easy-to-understand guide through a maze of research possibilities is for any genealogist who has Mississippi ancestry. It identifies the many official state records, incorporated community records, related federal records, and unofficial documents useful in researching Mississippi genealogy. Here the contents of these resources are clearly described, and directions for using them are clearly stated. Tracing Your Mississippi Ancestors also introduces many other helpful genealogical resources, including detailed colonial, territorial, state, and local materials. Among official records are census schedules, birth, marriage, divorce, and death registers, tax records, military documents, and records of land transactions such as deeds, tract books, land office papers, plats, and claims. In addition to noting such frequently used sources as Confederate Army records, this guidebook leads the researcher toward lesser-known materials, such as passenger lists from ships, Spanish court records, midwives' reports, WPA county histories, cemetery records, and information about extinct towns. Since researching forebears who belong to minority groups can be a difficult challenge, this book offers several avenues to discovering them. Of special focus are sources for locating African American and Native American ancestors. These include slave schedules, Freedman's Bureau papers, Civil War rolls, plantation journals, slave narratives, Indian census records, and Indian enrollment cards. To these specialized resources the authors of Tracing Your Mississippi Ancestors append an annotated bibliography of published and unpublished genealogical materials relating to Mississippi. Including over 200 citations, this is by far the most comprehensive list ever given for researching Mississippi genealogy. In addition, all of Mississippi's local, county, and state repositories of genealogical materials are identified, but because most documents for tracing Mississippi ancestors are found at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the authors have made the state archival collection in Jackson the focus of this book.

Book Cultural Resources Reconnaissance of Pascagoula Harbor Mississippi

Download or read book Cultural Resources Reconnaissance of Pascagoula Harbor Mississippi written by Tim S. Mistovich and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an extensive documentary search, reconnaissance survey of upland disposal sites and remote sensing survey of channel and disposal areas in the Pascagoula, Mississippi locale are presented, as a preliminary phase of planned harbor improvement by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District. A detailed account of the prehistory and history of the area, a description of 72 recorded shipwrecks, and a description of local shipbuilding traditions are included as a result of the documentary effort. The terrestrial survey involved the discovery and/or relocation of nine prehistoric and historic sites. Over five hundred anomalies were recorded in the marine survey portion of the investigations; attempts have been made to correlate these data with recorded shipwreck locations. A reconstruction of the geologic history of the area is presented, along with recommendations for further cultural resource investigations.
