Book Four and a half Dialogues on Homosexuality and the Bible

Download or read book Four and a half Dialogues on Homosexuality and the Bible written by Donald J. Zeyl and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four (and a half) Dialogues on Homosexuality and the Bible explores four different interpretive approaches to biblical texts regarding homosexuality and same-sex marriage. Differences of interpretation are discussed openly, honestly, and charitably. The dialogues’ four characters maintain friendship with each other despite their disagreements, and so the book serves as a model of how difficult, potentially divisive conversations on a controversial topic might be conducted. Three of the four perspectives presented for examination are well represented in the existing literature; the fourth is not as familiar and is offered and developed as a proposal for bridging the divide that persists among theologically conservative Christians who honor the authority of Scripture over their thinking and their living. Ongoing conflict over this issue is destructive of the unity toward which the Bible summons all believers to strive, and so the book includes also a call to create space for one another—both individually and institutionally—for differences in theological conclusions and in community practices. Each of the dialogues begins with one of the characters telling their personal story regarding their sexuality, continues with that character’s case for their view, and concludes with a series of suggested discussion questions.

Book God Is Not a Homophobe

Download or read book God Is Not a Homophobe written by Philo Thelos and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homosexuality is perhaps the most volatile topic discussed in today's church and society. A war rages that will ultimately determine how much civil liberty can be enjoyed by consenting homosexuals, and how much religious equality they will be granted. Several books already exist attempting to demonstrate that the Christian Bible does not, in fact, condemn consenting-adult homosexuality. But God is Not a Homophobe has a unique perspective in that the author has a lifetime of experience in pastoring hard-core fundamentalist churches. His former bitter opposition to all forms of homosexuality has given way to a rational, unbiased acceptance that the Bible says hardly anything about homosexuality, and what it does say cannot honestly be used to condemn consenting same-sex unions. In God Is Not a Homophobe, the author examines in detail every Bible verse and every Bible-based argument against homosexuality, and concludes with a view radically different from what is offered by the modern church. His conclusions will surprise many, and will surely aggravate and anger many more. But he believes the evidence in this book will stand the test of investigation. This unbiased look at homosexuality in the Bible gives much food for thought, and hopefully, much incentive for change in our attitude toward and treatment of those whose sexual orientation is "different."

The Bible has been used to justify slavery, inquisitions, apartheid and the subjugation of women. Now read what the Bible really says about homosexuality"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Two Views on Homosexuality the Bible and the Church

Download or read book Two Views on Homosexuality the Bible and the Church written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique among most debates on homosexuality, this book presents a constructive dialogue between people who disagree on significant ethical and theological matters, and yet maintain a respectful and humanizing posture toward one another. Few topics are more divisive today than homosexuality. Two Views on Homosexuality, the Bible, and the Church brings a fresh perspective to a well-worn debate. While Christian debates about homosexuality are most often dominated by biblical exegesis, this book seeks to give much-needed attention to the rich history of received Christian tradition, bringing the Bible into conversation with historical and systematic theology. To that end, both theologians and biblical scholars--well accomplished in their fields and conversant in issues of sexuality and gender--articulate and defend each of the two views: Affirming – represented by William Loader and Megan K. DeFranza Traditional – represented by Wesley Hill and Stephen R. Holmes The main essays are followed by insightful responses that interact with their fellow essayists with civility. Holding to a high view of Scripture, a commitment to the gospel and the church, and a love for people--especially those most affected by this topic--the contributors wrestle deeply with the Bible and theology, especially the prohibition texts, the role of procreation, gender complementarity, and pastoral accommodation. The book concludes with reflections from general editor Preston Sprinkle on the future of discussions on faith and sexuality. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Book What the Bible Says and Doesn t Say About Homosexuality

Download or read book What the Bible Says and Doesn t Say About Homosexuality written by John Teller and published by TellerBooks. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what the Bible has to say about homosexuality? A growing number of Christians have come to believe that the Bible does not prohibit or condemn homosexual acts. This book is intended to refute this fundamentally flawed view, and to respond to one of its principal propagators—the Rev. Dr. Mel White. The Rev. Mel White’s What the Bible Says—and Doesn’t Say—About Homosexuality is a treatise that argues that the Bible, when correctly understood, neither condemns nor prohibits homosexual relationships between loving, committed same-sex partners. The apparent prohibitions of sodomy and other homosexual acts in the Old Testament are intended not as injunctions from God, but as reflections of societal tastes and preferences. Even if such prohibitions were based on Old Testament biblical laws—Dr. White argues—such laws have no application or bearing on contemporary Christians, who fall under the law of grace. Dr. White’s treatise employs subtle twists of logic and misunderstandings of fundamental biblical principles in support of its conclusions. His treatise is especially dangerous to readers having shallow biblical knowledge and who may not fully understand the extent and clarity of the Bible’s prohibition on homosexual conduct. At last—there is now an answer to Dr. White’s treatise. In this volume, John Teller sets forth a systematic reply to each of Dr. White’s defenses of homosexuality. John Teller thoroughly replies to, refutes and rebuts each of Dr. White’s arguments on a detailed point-by-point basis. The present volume is indispensable to the Christian studying human sexuality in light of biblical principles.

Download or read book Five Uneasy Pieces written by Michael Kirby and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The uneasy pieces of this book are well-written, challenging and stimulating. They come from the pen of Australian biblical scholars within the Anglican communion, who are skilled in both exegesis and hermeneutical theory. Each essay addresses the question of homosexuality in the Bible, looking at passages in the Old Testament and the New Testament which are often used as a basis for rejecting homosexuality in Christian ethics. Each essays argues, on the contrary, that there is no biblical warrant for condemning either a homosexual orientation or a faithful and committed homosexual relationship. The book, as a whole, makes it crystal clear that both sides of the debate take seriously the Bible as the inspired word of God, and both are seeking to discern the Scriptures in order to hear Gods voice speaking to us today.

Book Homosexuality

Download or read book Homosexuality written by John Tyson and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church has been wrong about LGBTQI people. This book explains why. Most of us grew up with only part of the story concerning our gay and lesbian neighbors. We thought people chose to be homosexual, and that with God's help they could choose to be straight. New scientific research shows that sexual orientation is determined in the waters of the womb, not in the waters of baptism. Being straight or gay is not an act of will, it is a gift of God. This book traces a growing understanding of the interplay between God's love, scripture, the Church, and homosexuality. Although it isn't a science, psychology, history, or biblical studies book, it touches on those disciplines. The renowned medical researcher, Dr. Gregory Prince, wrote the scientific portion of Chapter 5, "Born that Way." There, you will find the latest information about genetics as it relates to sexual orientation and identity. The new scientific information on this topic is important, and is placed within a theological context. The central message of this book is that God wants every LGBTQI person to know of God's tender and seeking care for you. The Lord Jesus sees you and loves you. You are precious in the sight of the Lord. With discussion questions at the end of each chapter, this is an excellent resource for Bible study, group discussion, and General Conference developments.
