Book Marcel Duchamp Richard Mutt s Fountain

Download or read book Marcel Duchamp Richard Mutt s Fountain written by Stefan Banz and published by Les presses du réel. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Histories of Peirene

Download or read book Histories of Peirene written by Betsey Ann Robinson and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 2011 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peirene Fountain as described by its first excavator, Rufus B. Richardson, is "the most famous fountain of Greece." Here is a retrospective of a wellspring of Western civilization, distinguished by its long history, service to a great ancient city, and early identification as the site where Pegasus landed and was tamed by the hero Bellerophon. Spanning three millennia and touching a fourth, Peirene developed from a nameless spring to a renowned source of inspiration, from a busy landmark in Classical Corinth to a quiet churchyard and cemetery in the Byzantine era, and finally from free-flowing Ottoman fountains back to the streams of the source within a living ruin. These histories of Peirene as a spring and as a fountain, and of its watery imagery, form a rich cultural narrative whose interrelations and meanings are best appreciated when studied together. The author deftly describes the evolution of the Fountain of Peirene framed against the underlying landscape and its ancient, medieval, and modern settlement, viewed from the perspective of Corinthian culture and spheres of interaction. Published with the assistance of the Getty Foundation. Winner of the 2011 Prose Award for Professional and Scholarly Excellence in the category of Archaeology/Anthropology. The Prose Awards are given annually by the Professional and Scholarly Publishing division of the American Association of Publishers.

Download or read book Nicolas Lancret written by Mary Tavener Holmes and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a garden glade before a grand fountain, surrounded by a musical party, an elegant woman in a lustrous white gown dances as part of a foursome, raising her eyes to the viewer as if extending an invitation to the dance. This is the enticing scene in the J. Paul Getty Museum's painting "Dance before a Fountain" by Nicolas Lancret (1690-1743), an excellent example of the fete galante, a genre that was created and reached the peak of its popularity in France during the first half of the eighteenth century. This monograph seeks to familiarize American audiences with Lancret, a master of this genre, who was a revered painter in his own time, rivalling his contemporaries Antoine Watteau and Francois Boucher, and a favourite of crowned heads across Europe. Mary Tavener Holmes's engrossing text uses this painting as a springboard to reveal a remarkable amount about the painter, his mode of painting, Paris at the time this work was made, eighteenth-century dance, and the world of art patronage and collecting in France and elsewhere in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Lavishly illustrated with comparative paintings by artists such as Watteau, Boucher, Peter Paul Rubens, Jean-Francois De Troy, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and Hubert Robert, this fascinating peek into a bygone Parisian era is a treat for the eyes and the intellect alike.

Book Tabletop Fountains

Download or read book Tabletop Fountains written by Dawn Cusick and published by Lark Books (NC). This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people, the soothing sound of water trickling through a fountain has the same effect as taking a deep breath: it's instantly calming and relaxing. Now, thanks to this first-of-its-kind book, you can bring the rhythmic music of flowing water into your home with decorative tabletop fountains that you create yourself. The techniques are simple and the materials inexpensive. You begin with an attractive bowl or basin to which you add a submersible pump, along with plastic tubing to direct the water flow. Then comes the fun part--finding a way to disguise these elements. Marbles, stones, and rocks work well. In minutes, your fountain will be up and running. More elaborate fountains with layers of cascading water are also easy to build--they just take a little more time. Book jacket.
