Book Re Constructing Memory Education Identity and Conflict

Download or read book Re Constructing Memory Education Identity and Conflict written by Michelle J. Bellino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do schools protect young people and call on the youngest citizens to respond to violent conflict and division operating outside, and sometimes within, school walls? What kinds of curricular representations of conflict contribute to the construction of national identity, and what kinds of encounters challenge presumed boundaries between us and them? Through contemporary and historical case studies—drawn from Cambodia, Egypt, Northern Ireland, Peru, and Rwanda, among others—this collection explores how societies experiencing armed conflict and its aftermath imagine education as a space for forging collective identity, peace and stability, and national citizenship. In some contexts, the erasure of conflict and the homogenization of difference are central to shaping national identities and attitudes. In other cases, collective memory of conflict functions as a central organizing frame through which citizenship and national identity are (re)constructed, with embedded messages about who belongs and how social belonging is achieved. The essays in this volume illuminate varied and complex inter-relationships between education, conflict, and national identity, while accounting for ways in which policymakers, teachers, youth, and community members replicate, resist, and transform conflict through everyday interactions in educational spaces.

Book excerpt: "Education for a better world cares deeply about what kinds of people we become. People who are educated for a better world are simultaneously knowledgeable, acutely concerned for the welfare of all of humanity and actively involved in our common work of making sure that our national and global systems respect and care for all human beings, and for all other living things with which we share our ecosystem. They are cognizant of our shared humanity and of the free benefits that are provided us by healthy ecosystems." -Education for a Better WorldEducation for a Better World is both a commentary and critical analysis of education through its historical context and present-day relevance in the information age. The complex interplay between knowledge and tradition is examined to reveal the myriad ways in which education sculpts and defines society. What follows is a discussion on the importance of education as a principal means for effecting profound social and ecological change, with examples and analyses of service learning and sustainable development initiatives. Education for a Better World presents several suggestions for the consideration of both students and educators alike toward the aim of improving education and, consequently, our world as a whole.

Book Learning to Live Together

Download or read book Learning to Live Together written by Margaret Sinclair and published by United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization. This book was released on 2004 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents an attempt to interpret the aim of 'learning to live together' as a synthesis of many related goals, such as education for peace, human rights, citizenship and health-preserving behaviours. It focuses specifically on the skills, values, attitudes and concepts needed for learning to live together, rather than on 'knowledge' objectives. On the basis of a review of the literature and an examination of a number of cases from post-conflict and transition settings, this study proposes what appears to work in terms of helping students learn to become politely assertive rather than violent, to understand conflict and its prevention, to become mediators, to respect human rights, to become active and responsible members of their communities - as local, national and global citizens - to have balanced relationships with others and neither to coerce others nor be coerced, especially into risky health behaviours. While the focus is mainly on schools, the approach advocated is also applicable to non-formal education for youth and adults.

Book Social Work Practice in Africa

Download or read book Social Work Practice in Africa written by Janestic Twikirize and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of integrating indigenous knowledge systems into mainstream social work and ensuring context-specific, culturally relevant practice has long been emphasised in Africa and the Global South. This book, based on empirical research, presents a selection of indigenous and innovative models and approaches of problem solving that will inspire social work practice and education. At the core of these models lies a conceptual understanding of the community as the overarching principle for effective social work and social development in African contexts. The empirical part of the book has a focus on East Africa and highlights case examples from Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, and Kenya. The book is intended for use by those involved in social work and social development practice, social work educators, students, as well as policy makers. It is relevant not just for audiences in Africa but also the global social work community, especially those interested in promoting culturally relevant social work.
