Book 1 2 and 3 John An Introduction and Study Guide

Download or read book 1 2 and 3 John An Introduction and Study Guide written by Warren Carter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful study engages the debates and interpretations of the brief and somewhat elusive writings known in the Christian canon as 1, 2, and 3 John. Chapter 1 identifies six unknowns about the origins of the three writings: authors, relationship to John's Gospel, order, date and location of the writings, and their audiences. Chapters 2 and 3 delineate the debate concerning the relationship of these writings to a purported “Johannine tradition” and “Johannine community” in which a schism is claimed to have occurred. An alternative view recognizes that while there are some connections with John's Gospel, it is more compelling to see the writings as independent rather than derivative, as internally not externally directed, as pastoral not polemical, and as schism-free. Chapters 4-7 discuss important aspects of 1 John. Chapter 4 argues that its structure or organization is based on rhetorical and conceptual links among the writing's small units. Chapter 5 reads 1 John as a pastoral “in-house” writing, rather than a polemical attack on opponents. Chapter 6 identifies the genre of I John as not a letter or sermon but an epideictic speech that seeks to strengthen the identity, commitments, and practices of its believing recipients. Chapter 7 outlines theological understandings that underpin the writing's pastoral work. Chapters 8 and 9 focus on 2 and 3 John as writings that provide two different approaches to itinerant teachers. The narrative fiction in 2 John presents the elder's warning and skepticism about itinerant teachers whereas the author of 3 John, by contrast, advocates reception and welcome for itinerant teachers.

I even touched him." Just as we would write about someone we knew and loved, John told the early believers the truth about the Savior. But he didn't let them off the hook without an examination of their lives. Pastor John MacArthur will take you through these short but impactful letters, passage by passage, so that you can better understand their message of forgiveness, how to uphold a biblical faith, and the real dangers of spiritual warfare. John was not alone in his concern about the influence of false teachers in the early church. Jude, a half-brother of Christ, also wrote to the believers. In his letter, he firmly urged all believers to fight for truth, and encouraged all followers of Jesus to stand firm in the faith. —ABOUT THE SERIES— The MacArthur Bible Study series is designed to help you study the Word of God with guidance from widely respected pastor and author John MacArthur. Book Reading John and 1 2 3 John

Download or read book Reading John and 1 2 3 John written by Alicia D. Myers and published by Reading the New Testament, 2nd. This book was released on 2019 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading John and 1, 2, 3 John explores the literary and theological aspects of these writings, both as representative works from the same community as well as separate works with varying genres and audiences. Reading these works together as well as separately, Myers seeks to retrieve 1-3 John from the recesses of the Christian canon while simultaneously exploring the profound literary artistry and theological insight of all these Johannine writings. The Gospel and Letters of John all agree on the crucial need to recognize Jesus as God's Christ and Son in spite of the difficulty of his revelation and in spite of the various pressures and fears their readers face. Through such recognition, these writings argue that believers not only can come to know the God who is Love but also can show this Love through their imitation of Jesus.

Book The Epistles of John 1 3 John Commentary

Download or read book The Epistles of John 1 3 John Commentary written by James G Battell and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-06-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John's three epistles are hidden treasures that are found at the end of the New Testament. Along with Jude and Philemon, 1,2,3 John are sometimes eclipsed by Paul's larger and more in-depth epistles, and yet when read and carefully studied in light of his writings, they will make the serious student of Scripture sit up and appreciate just how much material John the apostle blessed the body of Christ with. This King James Bible study combines all three of James G. Battell's impromptu studies of First John, Second John and Third John, and presents them as an easy and enjoyable book to study along with. At just shy of 100 pages this book can be read over a long lunch break or in between meetings or family get-togethers. James G. Battell is a Christian writer, radio broadcaster, video maker, and podcaster. He also runs an international Bible-believing ministry with his father (www.excatholicsforchrist.com).

Book excerpt: The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God's Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) "Gospel Glimpses" highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) "Whole-Bible Connections" show how any given passage connects to the Bible's overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) "Theological Soundings" identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God's grace on every page of the Bible. The books of 1–3 John are full of practical wisdom for the Christian life. John wanted his readers to understand that as they grew in their understanding of their identity as children of God, they ought to grow in love for one another and in obedience to God's commands. Over the course of 12 weeks, this study helps us see what it looks like to truly love and follow Jesus in a world that "is passing away along with its desires"—a transformed life that comes through knowing the love of God in Jesus Christ. Part of the Knowing the Bible series.
