Dr John Warwick Montgomery Professor Emeritus, University of Bedfordshire, England ""This is a significant book on one of the most important subjects confronting Christians today: How to bring the biblical message to a world that thinks this message is meaningless or dangerous? Thomas Johnson's exposition of Romans 1-2 is a highly needed resource on general revelation, clearly written, eye-opening, compelling. I recommend this book most strongly."" Download or read book Martin Luther s Two Ways of Viewing Life and the Educational Foundation of a Lutheran Ethos written by Leonard S. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Leonard Smith's larger study, Religion and the Rise of History, this essay, Martin Luther's Two Ways of Viewing Life, asserts that Luther's well-known "at-the-same-time," simul, or paradoxical way of viewing life does not capture Luther's thought as a whole, because it does not represent his deeply incarnational and dynamic, mystical and holistic, particularizing and historical way of viewing life based on the power of the Word and the Spirit of God either in his own life or in human history. Smith contends (1) that the best way to capture Luther's "second" basic way of thinking and of viewing life is through the connected prepositions (connected especially for Lutherans) "in, with, and under"; (2) that this second basic way was based primarily on the Gospel of John and its great Prologue, which shows how God is acting, creating, and redeeming, and how Jesus is "the Word become flesh"; and (3) that understanding both of Luther's ways of viewing life is helpful for understanding Lutheran education and "a Lutheran ethos" since the sixteenth century. Since this brief essay is written primarly for a general audience, it can easily be used as a text or supplementary reading for a class, seminary, or group discussion.
Download or read book Philosophical Foundations written by Friedrich Julius Stahl and published by WordBridge Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical Foundations is an introduction to the philosophy of law, but it also furnishes the foundations for a Christian philosophy. In this ethically discombobulated time, it provides us with the metaphysical and ethical tools to slash our way through the wilderness of ideologies and power-craving opinions which threaten to overwhelm civilization. Indeed, a solid metaphysical and ethical framework is the crying need of our age and the indispensable presupposition for the various arts and sciences that make up the encyclopedia (“circle of learning”). The most basic datum such a framework can provide is very simply the either/or of a personal God from Whom all things originated or an ultimate reality that is impersonal. That is the starting point for inquiry. And it cannot be the case that the decision for an impersonal ultimate reality is a requirement for science. Functional atheism can be no requirement for participation either in academia or in public life and policymaking. Is science truly science that ignores the most basic fact of existence – the existence of God? It cannot be so. “If there were a God and He created the world, should that not be accepted because it is unscientific? If reason really did not carry the world in itself and could not find the world out by itself, would it nevertheless have to remove the world from itself, because that alone would be scientific? One might just as well require on the basis of science that man should not be born but rather should exist from eternity; or that man should feed himself from himself without food; or that the eye should see of itself, without objects and their impressions from outside. Scientificness demands that you be gods, but the fact is that you are only human – do you have to comply with scientificness?.... Is it the trick to explain the world without God, in and for itself, regardless of whether the explanation is sufficient – is this the essence and the glory of the scientific character? It is no subjection of science to authority if one expects of it that its knowledge should correspond to the object. No natural scientist will want to avoid the fact that his teaching must pass the test of the phenomena of nature – and yet the philosopher should have the privilege of his teaching merely being seen as logically consistent in order to be considered true, even if contradicted by all the facts, even if it leaves the great object it is supposed to solve untouched!” The proof of the pudding is in the eating, for the Christian worldview is the only key that unlocks the riddle of life, the only explanation of the otherwise unfathomable reality in which we live.

Download or read book The Foundations of European Private Law written by Roger Brownsword and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There remains an urgent need for a deeper discussion of the theoretical, political and federal dimensions of the European codification project. While much valuable work has already been undertaken, the chapters in this volume take as their starting point the proposition that further reflection and critical thought will enhance the quality and efficacy of the on-going work of the various codification bodies. The volume contains chapters by representatives of the Common Frame of Reference, the Study Group and the Acquis Group as well as by those who have not been involved in particular projects but who have previously commented more distantly on their work - for instance those belonging to the Trento Group, and the Social Justice Group. The chapters between them represent the most comprehensive attempt so far to survey the state of the codification project, its theoretical, political and federal foundations and the future prospects for enforcement and compliance.
