Book Foundations of an African Civilization

Download or read book Foundations of an African Civilization written by D. W. Phillipson and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Focuses on the Aksumite state of the first millennium AD in northern Ethiopia and southern Eritrea, its development, florescence and eventual transformation into the so-called medieval civilisation of Christian Ethiopia. This book seeks to apply a common methodology, utilising archaeology, art-history, written documents and oral tradition from a wide variety of sources; the result is a far greater emphasis on continuity than previous studies have revealed. It is thus a major re-interpretation of a key development in Ethiopia's past, while raising and discussing methodological issues of the relationship between archaeology and other historical disciplines; these issues, which have theoretical significance extending far beyond Ethiopia, are discussed in full. The last millennium BC is seen as a time when northern Ethiopia and parts of Eritrea were inhabited by farming peoples whose ancestry may be traced far back into the local 'Late Stone Age'. Colonisation from southern Arabia, to which defining importance has been attached by earlier researchers, is now seen to have been brief in duration and small in scale, its effects largely restricted to ľite sections of the community. Re-consideration of inscriptions shows the need to abandon the established belief in a single 'Pre-Aksumite' state. New evidence for the rise of Aksum during the last centuries BC is critically evaluated. Finally, new chronological precision is provided for the decline of Aksum and the transfer of centralised political authority to more southerly regions. A new study of the ancient churches - both built and rock-hewn - which survive from this poorly-understood period emphasises once again a strong degree of continuity across periods that were previously regarded as distinct."--Publisher's website.

Download or read book Kush the Jewel of Nubia written by Miriam Ma'at-Ka-Re Monges and published by Africa Research and Publications. This book was released on 1997 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great Chiekh Anta Diop gave African culture roots from which one can trace the branches. No African researcher since, however, has provided a comprehensive analysis connecting the ancient Nile Valley civilzation with the African cultural universe. From the pyramids of Egypt to the great walls of Zimbabwe, Western scholars have attributed the achievements of these prodigious indigenous African civilizations to people culturally and geographically alien to Africa. In the case of the ancient Nubian empire of Kush, however, which occupied the southern part of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and all of present-day Sudan, one expects reasonable scholars to attribute this African culture to an African people. Sadly, however, the dogmatic, eurocentric Hegelian analysis of Africa is still alive and well in even the most current research on Nubia and Kush. It is up to African scholars to reconstruct Kushite history using an Afrocentric approach in order to shed light on this vital part of our African heritage. The present much-needed work traces Diop's great "African cultural commonalities" of matriarchy, totemism, divine kingship, and cosmogony to the very core of Kushite culture. This work represents the cutting edge of a new generation of Afrocentric. scholarship whose mandate it is to provide a clearer picture of Africa's true nature and of its genuine contribution to World Civilization.

Book A Tribute to African Civilization

Download or read book A Tribute to African Civilization written by Kasala Kamara and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sharp refreshing contrast to the punch drunk propaganda hurled against Africa and its offspring, Kasala Kamara has authored a cultural literary showpiece of Africa and all of its glory. This comprehensive compendium clarifies the call to acknowledge Diaspora interconnection and the need for unification. Sene Press is to be commended for dedicating resources to this much needed work. Kamara selects the best in literary quotes/references on Africa to soundly defeat confusing religious/political dogma/indoctrination. He sites the great works of Dr. Yosef ben-Jochannan, George G. M. James, Steven Biko, Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Amos Wilson, and many others. The reader need not worry about cross references since this modest book of 133 pages has over 100 references of African and non-African reputable scholars. This African literary gem though highly concentrated is an extremely smooth flowing and well compartmentalized read suited for classrooms or independent researchers alike. Its reader-friendly format makes for an excellent introductory book on Africa by covering such diverse subjects as law, politics, science, and cultural customs to name a few. After reading this book readers will insist that the greatest international monetary debt and homage is owed to Africa. Kamara states and proves that "Africa is rightfully known as the birthplace of humanity, the cradle of civilization." The "Re-emergence of Africa as a world power" as Kamara boldly affirms is sure to follow.

Book Introduction to the History of African Civilization Precolonial Africa

Download or read book Introduction to the History of African Civilization Precolonial Africa written by C. Magbaily Fyle and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the History of African Civilization explores the major issues dominating African Civilization from the earliest recorded period to the eve of colonial conquest of the continent. C. Magbaily Fyle begins with a discussion of the myths and prejudices underlying most analyses of African issues, and moves into a discussion of the origin of humanity; the similarities between the classical Nile valley civilizations of Egypt, Nubia, Kush, and Axum; and the spread of Islam through African societies. He portrays the systems of precolonial government and society, including the role of women in governance, as well as traditional trade and agricultural patterns. Fyle provides a new perspective on the Islamic Jihads, shifting focus from Sokoto and Macina to the Senegambia and the Upper Guinea region, and a revised interpretation of the Atlantic slave trade, which includes the importance of African objectors to this process. He also discusses important cultural features such as the traditional African food, architecture, and typical structures of towns.
