Specific topics include policy making factors, social security, employment, retirement and pension policies, health and long-term care policies, including medicaid and medicare, social services, and housing policies. Book Improving Data on America s Aging Population

Download or read book Improving Data on America s Aging Population written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-12-20 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee on National Statistics and the Committee on Population, at the request of the NIA, convened a workshop in March 1996 to discuss data on the aging population that address the emerging and important social, economic, and health conditions of the older population. The purposes of the workshop were to identify how the population at older ages in the next few decades will differ from the older population today, to understand the underlying causes of those changes, to anticipate future problems and policy issues, and to suggest future needs for data for research in these areas. The scope of the workshop was broader than that of the 1988 CNSTAT report, including not only data on health and long-term care, but also actuarial, economic, demographic, housing, and epidemiological data needs for informing public policy.

Book Building Foundations

Download or read book Building Foundations written by Denise DiPasquale and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National housing policy is the subject of ongoing debate, and this book brings together much of the current wisdom on the issues that lie at the center of the debate. This volume addresses a wide range of policy concerns, including: Who should receive limited federal housing resources? How and to what extent should we preserve the existing, private, subsidized, and public low income housing stock? What are the appropriate roles for the federal, state and local governments, the nonprofits and the private sector in delivering housing programs? This comprehensive study of housing policy in the U.S. is the result of the MIT Housing Policy Project (1987-1989), which was directed by the editors. The Project assembled leading scholars and practitioners from across the country, representing a wide range of perspectives, to assess the key policy issues of housing availability, affordability, and quality. As the national debate continues, Building Foundations offers clarification of a complex set of issues.

Book A Secular Age beyond the West

Download or read book A Secular Age beyond the West written by Mirjam Künkler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces religion and secularity in eleven countries not shaped by Western Christianity (Japan, China, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, and Morocco), and how they parallel or diverge from Charles Taylor's grand narrative of the North Atlantic world, A Secular Age (2007). In all eleven cases, the state - enhanced by post-colonial and post-imperial legacies - highly determines religious experience, by variably regulating religious belief, practice, property, education and/or law. Taylor's core condition of secularity - namely, legal permissibility and social acceptance of open religious unbelief (Secularity III) - is largely absent in these societies. The areas affected by state regulation, however, differ greatly. In India, Israel and most Muslim countries, questions of religious law are central to state regulation. But it is religious education and organization in China, and church property and public practice in Russia that bear the brunt. This book explains these differences using the concept of 'differential burdening'.

Book Gulf Charities and Islamic Philanthropy in the Age of Terror and Beyond

Download or read book Gulf Charities and Islamic Philanthropy in the Age of Terror and Beyond written by Jonathan Benthall and published by Gerlach Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gulf Charities and Islamic Philanthropy in the "Age of Terror" and Beyond is the first book to be published on the charities of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf, covering their work both domestic and international. From a diversity of viewpoints, the book addresses: the historical roots of Islamic philanthropy in religious traditions and geopolitical movements; the interactions of the Gulf charities with "Western" relief and development institutions - now under pressure owing to budgetary constraints; numerous case studies from the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia; the impact of violent extremism on the sector, with the legal repercussions that have followed - especially in the USA; the recent history of attempts to alleviate the obstacles faced by bona fide Islamic charities, whose absence from major conflict zones now leaves a vacuum for extremist groups to penetrate; the prospects for a less politicized Islamic charity sector when the so-called "war on terror" eventually loses its salience.
