Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundation Readers, Vol. 4 A Reading Book is, or should be, a collection of the sayings and writings of the best men and the noblest women. The young are asked to think over again the thoughts of others; they are directed to make those thoughts so much their own that they in turn will be able to aid in transmitting them to posterity. Will this thought have a good efiect on the soul of the reader? Will it inspire him to do better work, to have higher ideals, to develop his character more in accord ance with the designs of the Creator? These and other questions face the makers of Reading Books, and the test of the book's worth must be determined by its effect on the thoughts, words, and deeds of the readers. Book four of the Foundation Readers contains literary selections and pictures which will convey to the young elevating thoughts, and which will inspire them to do noble deeds. In making the literary selections the following points have been considered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundation Readers, Vol. 2: Book Two The new sight words are chiefly those used in the ordinary vocabulary of children old enough to read from this book. The new words express the thoughts within the comprehension of the children. They are given in this work to aid in introducing some new form of expression or some author. The words perplex, perplexed, vanish, vanished, and atmosphere are the chief words which are not in the vocab ulary of the children, but the ideas are familiar. These Words are given to prepare for reading Longfellow's Children, and to introduce Longfellow to the children. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blodgett Readers by Grades, Vol. 4 Until the pupil reaches the grade of a fourth reader he is mainly concerned with the technicalities of learning to read. His attention has been concentrated on the printed symbols and the intricacies of their combinations. At this point, however, he is prepared to enjoy, without the hindrances that have hitherto blocked his way, the full use of his new powers, and he may fairly expect entertainment as well as instruction. These, the legitimate rewards of his efforts, should now be put within his grasp. He should be introduced to the masters of fiction and have at least a glimpse of the delights which Scott and Dickens, Hawthorne and Stevenson, will open to him. He should also build a foundation for the future study of history, mythology, science, and poetry, and he should make acquaintance, at least, with the literary storehouses to which he will find constant allu sion as his knowledge of books increases, Chaucer's Canter bury Tales, German folklore, The Arabian Nights, the Norse and Greek myths, and other rich treasuries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hill Readers, Vol. 4 To take advantage of the fact that the fourth-reader child is perhaps in his most expansive imaginative period, an unusually large number of new as well as classic myths and wonder stories have been incorporated in this book. As a large proportion of the school children of America live in the country, especial care has been taken to include a large and varied number of selections relating to rural life. These, it is hoped, will help to foster a love for nature and for the country home, open the eyes of children to the marvelous beauties around them, and bring them nearer the life that they are to lead. To help children attending schools in which there are few reference books, the biographical notes have been made fuller than in most readers. Book The Sprague Classic Readers Vol 4

Download or read book The Sprague Classic Readers Vol 4 written by Sarah E. Sprague and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sprague Classic Readers, Vol. 4: Part One The author of the sprague classic readers understands children intimately. She has touched very closely the lives of many of them, in their plays and games, and in their work in the school room. She knows their ways, what they like, hat bores them, what exerts a happy influence upon them. She can take the child's point of view; and she can, also, take the adult's point of view in planning wisely for the child's welfare. This familiarity with child-life has, in my judgment, enabled the author to make an excellent series of readers. The selections inter est the child for whom they are designed; and this is the most important consideration in a reading book. The art of arts is easily acquired when the child uses it in gaining something he enjoys; but it is drudgery when it adds little or nothing to his pleasure. Myth, fairy tale, and fable, biography, history, nature study, the events of daily life, all have been searched over and the most attractive, and the best culled out for young readers. The selections in this book deal with a variety of situations and experiences which come very close to all children. And they all point upward and forward. They take the child in the sphere of life in which he normally lives, and show him an ideal sort of conduct. They do not tell him how to behave; they suggest good behavior by presenting concrete examples of it. If we can present to the young in literature. As well as in real life, persons, as well as animals, they are genuinely fond of, conducting themselves in kindly, courteous, brave, honest, and considerate ways, we shall do the most that can be done for their moral and social training. I feel that the author has succeeded in doing this very effectively in this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Barnes Readers, Vol. 4 But as the village was so small, Karl wished very much to go to see the world, and to study painting with great teachers. The village people thought that he was already a wonderful painter, because he could sit down before a flower, or a house or even a child's face, and make such a good copy of it that no one could think how it might be better. They could not see, therefore, why Karl was not satisfied. But he always told them that there were better pictures in the world than either he or they had ever seen, and that if they could once see them, they would never again be pleased with his. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sprague Classic Reader, Vol. 4: Book Four, Part Two In the Sprague Classic Readers, the author unmistakably designs to interest the pupils strongly, and to teach them helpful lessons, by means of selections having genuine literary merit. To do this, the thought-content of the selections must lie within the circle of the child's living, vital interests, not too trivial, nor yet too abstruse or philosophical. They must be more difficult than what has already been achieved, and yet be within easy grasp; and in every instance, they must help the pupil to a better understanding of the world of men and things about him, and of his own right relations thereto. A study of this book will demonstrate its fitness to accomplish the delicate and difficult task indicated. From its reading, the child will gain a clearer insight into his social environment, which is the most important thing in education. The thought that good-will and kindly co-operation are worth while is constantly suggested, and this suggestion must, gradually, become manifest in the child's own behavior. His ethical and social nature will, also, be aroused and nourished by the concrete examples of correct ethical and social action so attractively presented to him. He is not required to learn meaningless words and phrases for arbitrary memory training, the varied information given being related to something of vital concern to himself in the experiences of his daily life. Nor are ethical lessons obtruded upon the child. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the earlier books the foundations for this advance were carefully laid. One at a time, each phase of child development has been recognized and emphasized. The varied activities, games and pets; nature, fairy tales, and adventure; fable, primitive fiction, and rhyme - all these in rien abundance have helped to furnish a vocabulary and a margin of intellectual and moral resources. In the earlier Readers the authors have also aimed to secure a mastery of phonic elements, and an ability to recognize words. Book The Foundation Pit

Download or read book The Foundation Pit written by Andrei Platonov and published by ISCI. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written at the height of Stalin's first "five-year plan" for the industrialization of Soviet Russia and the parallel campaign to collectivize Soviet agriculture, Andrei Platonov's The Foundation Pit registers a dissonant mixture of utopian longings and despair. Furthermore, it provides essential background to Platonov's parody of the mainstream Soviet "production" novel, which is widely recognized as one of the masterpieces of twentieth-century Russian prose. In addition to an overview of the work's key themes, it discusses their place within Platonov's oeuvre as a whole, his troubled relations with literary officialdom, the work's ideological and political background, and key critical responses since the work's first publication in the West in 1973.

Book New Foundations for Classical Mechanics

Download or read book New Foundations for Classical Mechanics written by David Hestenes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to geometric algebra as a unified language for physics and mathematics. It contains extensive applications to classical mechanics in a textbook format suitable for courses at an intermediate level. The text is supported by more than 200 diagrams to help develop geometrical and physical intuition. Besides covering the standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies, the book introduces new, coordinate-free methods for rotational dynamics and orbital mechanics, developing these subjects to a level well beyond that of other textbooks. These methods have been widely applied in recent years to biomechanics and robotics, to computer vision and geometric design, to orbital mechanics in government and industrial space programs, as well as to other branches of physics. The book applies them to the major perturbations in the solar system, including the planetary perturbations of Mercury's perihelion. Geometric algebra integrates conventional vector algebra (along with its established notations) into a system with all the advantages of quaternions and spinors. Thus, it increases the power of the mathematical language of classical mechanics while bringing it closer to the language of quantum mechanics. This book systematically develops purely mathematical applications of geometric algebra useful in physics, including extensive applications to linear algebra and transformation groups. It contains sufficient material for a course on mathematical topics alone. The second edition has been expanded by nearly a hundred pages on relativistic mechanics. The treatment is unique in its exclusive use of geometric algebra and in its detailed treatment of spacetime maps, collisions, motion in uniform fields and relativistic precession. It conforms with Einstein's view that the Special Theory of Relativity is the culmination of developments in classical mechanics.

Book New Foundations for Classical Mechanics

Download or read book New Foundations for Classical Mechanics written by D. Hestenes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-17 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (revised) This is a textbook on classical mechanics at the intermediate level, but its main purpose is to serve as an introduction to a new mathematical language for physics called geometric algebra. Mechanics is most commonly formulated today in terms of the vector algebra developed by the American physicist J. Willard Gibbs, but for some applications of mechanics the algebra of complex numbers is more efficient than vector algebra, while in other applications matrix algebra works better. Geometric algebra integrates all these algebraic systems into a coherent mathematical language which not only retains the advantages of each special algebra but possesses powerful new capabilities. This book covers the fairly standard material for a course on the mechanics of particles and rigid bodies. However, it will be seen that geometric algebra brings new insights into the treatment of nearly every topic and produces simplifications that move the subject quickly to advanced levels. That has made it possible in this book to carry the treatment of two major topics in mechanics well beyond the level of other textbooks. A few words are in order about the unique treatment of these two topics, namely, rotational dynamics and celestial mechanics.
