Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundation of British East Africa British East Africa has a threefold history, geographical, political and administrative, dealing respectively with the story of its exploration, the struggle for its possession and the beginning of its commercial development. These three histories relate to such different subjects that it is not easy to combine them into a connected story; but I have tried to tell as much of each as is necessary to explain the adventurous history of British East Africa from the voyages of the ancient merchants and Arab traders to the establishment of British rule. Among the modern expeditions I have only described those which have had an important influence on the founding of British East Africa. Download or read book The Foundation of British East Africa Classic Reprint written by J. W. Gregory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundation of British East Africa Since the manuscript was concluded, news of the mutiny in Somaliland' and the deplorable death of Mr. Jenner, whose tact and integrity as chief judge at Mombasa did so much to establish native faith in British justice, and the rebellion in Nandi show that British East Africa has not yet secured the peace which is essential to that growth of population which is the country's greatest need. These wars are most regrettable from financial as well as other considerations. The government of British East Africa will for some years inevitably be very costly. A cheap administration at the present stage must come to evil. Five millions of pounds are being spent on the Uganda railway, which will assuredly prove a bad investment if money for the development of the country be unwisely stinted. A more generous grant for the investigation of the economic resources of the country is especially necessary. Book A History of East Africa 1592 1902

Download or read book A History of East Africa 1592 1902 written by R.W. Beachey and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering a vital period in the history and development of East Africa this narrative history of the vast region explores the diverse cultural influences of the Arab peoples who traded with East Africa and settled there, Portuguese traders who arrived from the late 17th century onwards and the first wave of settlers from the Indian Subcontinent who arrived in the 19th century. Focusing in particular on the emergence of the slave trade and the subsequent anti-slave trade campaigns, the book is based on contemporary and little known sources. The author shows how rivalries between Britain, France, Germany, Belgium and America were played out in this region prior to the early years of the British colonial administration and settlement. Special attention is given to a number of key issues such as Lugard's land settlement in Uganda; the demarcation of boundaries and the rounding out of frontiers; the role of the Imperial British East Africa Company in the partition of East Africa; Anglo-German rivalry and the foundation of German East Africa; the little-known story of Italian ambitions in the region; the completion of the Uganda Railway to Lake Victoria; and the concept of British East Africa as two distinct parts: Uganda and the East Africa Protectorate. The emphasis of Beachey's book is part-diplomatic and international history, part exploration and colonial history, and focuses on the early industrial and infrastructural development of the region, and the beginnings of white settlement in Kenya.
