Book excerpt: The Mississippi Test Facility, located in southwest Mississippi, is the site for test firing of the first and second stages of the Saturn 5 boosters. At the request of the U.S. Army Engineer District, Mobile, plans were developed for instrumenting the test stands to obtain data on foundation base pressures, lateral wall pressures, and pile loads during construction. Soils beneath the S-1C test stand consist of 36 ft of brown fat clay underlain by dense, poorly graded sands. To support the structure, 1640 vertical and battered H piles were driven through the clay into the dense sand. Stress meters were installed beneath the foundation to measure base pressures, and on the walls to measure wall loads. Stress meters and pore pressure cells were installed beneath the S-2 stand. Strain gages were mounted on 40 piles of the 588 used. (Author).

The S-IC stage of the vehicle was statically tested at 7,500,000-lb thrust in a dual-position stand on a reinforced concrete foundation supported by vertical and battered H piles. Soil stress meters were installed beneath the foundation and on the walls to measure base and lateral wall pressures. Pore pressure cells were installed to measure hydrostatic pressure. Strain gages measured axial and shear loads. The S-2 stage of the vehicle was statically tested at 1,000,000-lb thrust in a single-position stand on a split-level reinforced concrete foundation supported by vertical and battered H piles; soil stress meters and pore pressure cells were installed beneath the foundation and on the walls, and strain gages measured axial and shear pile loads. Strain gages were installed on two test piles that were driven before excavation for the test stand foundations to determine the required length of piling. The test piles were driven through casings installed to the approximate subgrade elevation to eliminate frictional effects of soil that would later be excavated. This report describes instrumentation placed on the test piles, presents strain gage readings made during 186- and 300-ton load tests, and presents strain gage readings made before the load tests and after excavation at the S-2, Al test stand. Pile driving data together with boring logs and logs of split-spoon sample borings are also presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Investigations were conducted to determine the behavior of steel H piles and concrete-filled pipe piles subjected to static and vibratory loads. Field tests included static and vibratory loading of single piles and vibratory testing of a group of four H piles with a common cap. Each single pile and one pile of the four-pile group were instrumented with bonded foil-type gages prior to driving. Static loads of up to 200 tons were applied incrementally, and vibratory loads from 1 to 10 tons were applied over a range of frequencies at various static loadings. Strain, settlement, dynamic displacement, and critical frequencies were determined. Fundamental theory was developed for the dynamic behavior of the soil-pile system, and the theoretical data were compared with the experimental data. This study showed that the dynamic behavior of piles subjected to vibratory loads can be determined from static load tests and dynamic theory. (Author).
