Book Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights

Download or read book Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights written by Bychawska-Siniarska, Dominika and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Convention on Human Rights – Article 10 – Freedom of expression 1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises. 2. The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary. In the context of an effective democracy and respect for human rights mentioned in the Preamble to the European Convention on Human Rights, freedom of expression is not only important in its own right, but it also plays a central part in the protection of other rights under the Convention. Without a broad guarantee of the right to freedom of expression protected by independent and impartial courts, there is no free country, there is no democracy. This general proposition is undeniable. This handbook is a practical tool for legal professionals from Council of Europe member states who wish to strengthen their skills in applying the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in their daily work.

Book Why I Write

    Book Details:
  • Author : George Orwell
  • Publisher : Renard Press Ltd
  • Release : 2021-01-01
  • ISBN : 1913724263
  • Pages : 15 pages

Download or read book Why I Write written by George Orwell and published by Renard Press Ltd. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Book Freedom Is the Foundation

Download or read book Freedom Is the Foundation written by Aaron Withe and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2023-06-22 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Freedom Foundation is figuratively and literally writing the book on how to defeat government unions in America.” —Mike Huckabee, Former Governor of Arkansas “Aaron Withe and his team at the Freedom Foundation are doing work that I wish could have been done in Britain decades ago. If America is to continue to be the most free and prosperous country in the world, then the Freedom Foundation must win its fight against government unions. They have already been able to help hundreds of thousands of public employees to leave their unions, forcing union bosses into early retirement.” —Nigel Farage Critical race theory. Defunding the police. Closing down schools and keeping our children’s faces forever masked. What do these “woke” policies have in common? They are pushed and funded by government unions, which are the primary bankroller of the leftist causes that are growing Big Government and destroying American public education. The Freedom Foundation, a self-described “battle tank,” is dedicated to eliminating the pernicious influence of these unions. The Freedom Foundation’s CEO, Aaron Withe, is an English-born former college basketball player who is now dunking for American liberty. In Freedom Is the Foundation, Withe gives an insider account of his organization’s always aggressive, sometimes controversial, and undeniably successful campaign to recapture America from government unions. Taking advantage of a recent landmark US Supreme Court decision, the Freedom Foundation has helped liberate hundreds of thousands of government workers from their unions, saving them an average of $1,100 in yearly dues and depriving the unions of hundreds of millions of dollars—and rising—that would otherwise have been spent promoting radical causes and candidates. Blending frontline reporting with inspiring stories of courageous men and women who are standing up for their rights, Freedom Is the Foundation is both a roadmap to recovering freedom in America and a stirring account of how dedicated patriots are taking on—and intending to defeat—the most powerful lobby for wokeness and Big Government bullying in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of posters from the author’s counseling practice. Some posters were designed to hang in the office, some in the waiting room, and some for clients to take home. Most of the posters presented in this book were never seen or shared. This was because of a focus on many of the other handouts developed by the author for his clients. Additional sayings have been added, and many of the posters have been rewritten or modified. The first chapter consists of sayings related to both right and wrong thinking patterns. You are helped to discover how thinking can easily lead to misperception. Chapter Two contains sayings that help to make real the difference between being a container versus being the contents of a container. Each of the eight chapters adds another category of posters.

Download or read book Unlearning Liberty written by Greg Lukianoff and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a generation, shocking cases of censorship at America’s colleges and universities have taught students the wrong lessons about living in a free society. Drawing on a decade of experience battling for freedom of speech on campus, First Amendment lawyer Greg Lukianoff reveals how higher education fails to teach students to become critical thinkers: by stifling open debate, our campuses are supercharging ideological divisions, promoting groupthink, and encouraging an unscholarly certainty about complex issues. Lukianoff walks readers through the life of a modern-day college student, from orientation to the end of freshman year. Through this lens, he describes startling violations of free speech rights: a student in Indiana punished for publicly reading a book, a student in Georgia expelled for a pro-environment collage he posted on Facebook, students at Yale banned from putting an F. Scott Fitzgerald quote on a T shirt, and students across the country corralled into tiny “free speech zones” when they wanted to express their views. But Lukianoff goes further, demonstrating how this culture of censorship is bleeding into the larger society. As he explores public controversies involving Juan Williams, Rush Limbaugh, Bill Maher, Richard Dawkins, Larry Summers—even Dave Barry and Jon Stewart—Lukianoff paints a stark picture of our ability as a nation to discuss important issues rationally. Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate illuminates how intolerance for dissent and debate on today’s campus threatens the freedom of every citizen and makes us all just a little bit dumber.

Book Algorithmic Foundation of Robotics VII

Download or read book Algorithmic Foundation of Robotics VII written by Srinivas Akella and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithms are a fundamental component of robotic systems: they control or reason about motion and perception in the physical world. They receive input from noisy sensors, consider geometric and physical constraints, and operate on the world through imprecise actuators. The design and analysis of robot algorithms therefore raises a unique combination of questions in control theory, computational and differential geometry, and computer science. This book contains the proceedings from the 2006 Workshop on the Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics. This biannual workshop is a highly selective meeting of leading researchers in the field of algorithmic issues related to robotics. The 32 papers in this book span a wide variety of topics: from fundamental motion planning algorithms to applications in medicine and biology, but they have in common a foundation in the algorithmic problems of robotic systems.

Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.
