Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textile artists have always used found objects, both for decoration and to imbue their work with meaning. Cas Holmes is renowned for her use of ‘the found’, and her many-layered, atmospheric pieces have been shown around the world. The practice differs from recycling in that the objects often remain ‘themselves’ when they are incorporated into the work, rather than being transformed into something else and their original appearance being obliterated. The work is often conceived and built around the found object. The definition ‘found object’ can include a wide range of objects, from natural materials such as driftwood and leaves to old bits of machinery and vintage fabrics. Mundane objects such as CD cases can be used to create stunning pieces of art, or more sentimental items such as old jewellery can lend deep meaning to a work. The book covers: •How to find objects: for example in the home, walking the streets, travel souvenirs •Types of found object: including natural objects, man-made items, printed ephemera •Using found objects: using little jewels to decorate work, making unusual frames, creating work within boxes •Creating surfaces with found objects: printing, layering, fusing, cutting and stitch This book contains a wealth of techniques and inspiration for incorporating found objects into your textile work.

Download or read book Art School written by Steven Henry Madoff and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-09-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading international artists and art educators consider the challenges of art education in today's dramatically changed art world. The last explosive change in art education came nearly a century ago, when the German Bauhaus was formed. Today, dramatic changes in the art world—its increasing professionalization, the pervasive power of the art market, and fundamental shifts in art-making itself in our post-Duchampian era—combined with a revolution in information technology, raise fundamental questions about the education of today's artists. Art School (Propositions for the 21st Century) brings together more than thirty leading international artists and art educators to reconsider the practices of art education in academic, practical, ethical, and philosophical terms. The essays in the book range over continents, histories, traditions, experiments, and fantasies of education. Accompanying the essays are conversations with such prominent artist/educators as John Baldessari, Michael Craig-Martin, Hans Haacke, and Marina Abramovic, as well as questionnaire responses from a dozen important artists—among them Mike Kelley, Ann Hamilton, Guillermo Kuitca, and Shirin Neshat—about their own experiences as students. A fascinating analysis of the architecture of major historical art schools throughout the world looks at the relationship of the principles of their designs to the principles of the pedagogy practiced within their halls. And throughout the volume, attention is paid to new initiatives and proposals about what an art school can and should be in the twenty-first century—and what it shouldn't be. No other book on the subject covers more of the questions concerning art education today or offers more insight into the pressures, challenges, risks, and opportunities for artists and art educators in the years ahead. Contributors Marina Abramovic, Dennis Adams, John Baldessari, Ute Meta Bauer, Daniel Birnbaum, Saskia Bos, Tania Bruguera, Luis Camnitzer, Michael Craig-Martin, Thierry de Duve, Clémentine Deliss, Charles Esche, Liam Gillick, Boris Groys, Hans Haacke, Ann Lauterbach, Ken Lum, Steven Henry Madoff, Brendan D. Book High Tech Trash

Download or read book High Tech Trash written by Carolyn L. Kane and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free ebook version of this title will be available through Luminos, University of California Press’ Open Access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. High-Tech Trash analyzes creative strategies in glitch, noise, and error to chart the development of an aesthetic paradigm rooted in failure. Carolyn L. Kane explores how technologically influenced creative practices, primarily from the second half of the twentieth and first quarter of the twenty-first centuries, critically offset a broader culture of pervasive risk and discontent. In so doing, she questions how we continue onward, striving to do better and acquire more, despite inevitable disappointment. High-Tech Trash speaks to a paradox in contemporary society in which failure is disavowed yet necessary for technological innovation.

Book Junk

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gillian Whiteley
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2010-11-30
  • ISBN : 085772021X
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Junk written by Gillian Whiteley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trash, garbage, rubbish, dross, and detritus - in this enjoyably radical exploration of 'Junk', Gillian Whiteley rethinks art's historical and present appropriation of junk within our eco-conscious and globalised culture. She does this through an illustrated exploration of particular materials, key moments and locations and the telling of a panoply of trash narratives. Found and ephemeral materials are primarily associated with assemblage - object-based practices which emerged in the mid-1950s and culminated in the seminal exhibition 'The Art of Assemblage' in New York in 1961. With its deployment of the discarded and the filthy, Whiteley argues, assemblage has been viewed as a disruptive, transgressive artform that engaged with narratives of social and political dissent, often in the face of modernist condemnation as worthless kitsch. In the Sixties, parallel techniques flourished in Western Europe, the US and Australia but the idiom of assemblage and the re-use of found materials and objects - with artist as bricoleur - is just as prevalent now. This is a timely book that uncovers the etymology of waste and the cultures of disposability within these economies of wealth.
