Book Fostering Creativity in the Elementary Music Classroom Through Actively Creating and Performing

Download or read book Fostering Creativity in the Elementary Music Classroom Through Actively Creating and Performing written by Kristin Anschutz and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The activities created for this lesson plan were designed to allow students the opportunity to create as a small group and have that creation fit into a larger ensemble for performance. Students were allowed to select one of four modes for creation: instrumental accompaniment, movement, singing, or body percussion ostinato. Their compositions were based around a section of poetry that then tied back into a full Orff ensemble using rondo form. The two areas in my teaching where I see the most room for development as a result of my graduate studies are active music making and creativity. As a Kodaly-inspired teacher, my classroom is full of opportunities for students to joyfully experience music by singing, dancing, and playing games. However, my experiences at graduate school and through teaching during the pandemic have challenged me to incorporate more instrumental music opportunities using Orff instruments and ukuleles. I have been working to hone my skills at providing the students a music-making experience in each class where they leave feeling excited at performing a piece of music together, be that instrumental or vocal. Continuing to foster creativity in my classroom is another area of development. My studies have convinced me of the need to let students more freely explore compositional opportunities without too many rules and prompts as a means of developing the students' own areas of musical interest. In this area I feel I am often limited by my own desire to control their creations as well as the logistics of creating a safe, structured learning environment. As the students become more comfortable exploring and creating in a setting with few limiting parameters, I anticipate being able to add specific rules back into the process to allow them to record or notate their creations in order to share them with others. This set of lessons allowed me the opportunity to work on efficiently teaching parts for an Orff ensemble and on structuring varied creative tasks for student success in developing the rondo. Both of these are skills I hope to build on as I plan other, similar activities in the coming school year and continue to build a sequence for fostering creativity in my classroom.

Book excerpt: This collection initiates a resolutely interdisciplinary research dynamic specifically concerning musical creativity. Creativity is one of the most challenging issues currently facing scientific psychology and its study has been relatively rare in the cognitive sciences, especially in artificial intelligence. This book will address the need for a coherent and thorough exploration. Musical Creativity: Multidisciplinary Research in Theory and Practice comprises seven sections, each viewing musical creativity from a different scientific vantage point, from the philosophy of computer modelling, through music education, interpretation, neuroscience, and music therapy, to experimental psychology. Each section contains discussions by eminent international specialists of the issues raised, and the book concludes with a postlude discussing how we can understand creativity in the work of eminent composer, Jonathan Harvey. This unique volume presents an up-to-date snapshot of the scientific study of musical creativity, in conjunction with ESCOM (the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music). Describing many of the different aspects of musical creativity and their study, it will form a useful springboard for further such study in future years, and will be of interest to academics and practitioners in music, psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, neuroscience and other fields concerning the study of human cognition in this most human of behaviours.

Download or read book Creating Music written by Patricia Elaine Riley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children create music in individually unique ways, but also using common processes. Each creating process component stated in the United States’ National Music Standards (imagine, plan and make, evaluate and refine, and present; NCCAS, 2014) is explored in this text using children’s creations from China, India, Ireland, Mexico, and the United States as examples. What can the characteristics of music created by children from five diverse locations teach us about creating music? How do the sounds surrounding children in their schools, homes, and communities affect the music they create and what can be learned from this? How do children’s similar creating processes inform how we teach music? These questions are investigated as the children’s music compositions and improvisations are shared and examined. As this narrative unfolds, readers will become acquainted with the children, their original music, and what the children say about their music and its creation. What we learn from this exploration leads to teaching strategies, projects, lesson plans, and mentoring recommendations that will help music educators benefit from these particular children’s creations.

Book Musical Extrapolations

Download or read book Musical Extrapolations written by Sebastian Schmidt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book proposes a systematic understanding about the conditions, mechanisms, influences, and processes evolving into a creative behavior in music, based on interdisciplinary perspectives of the cognitive sciences, In his research study, Sebastian Schmidt focuses on so-called musical extrapolations’ processes which bring the elusive quality of music into mental existence by creating extrapolations about possible future occurring events, their musical meanings, and the interrelations of their meanings. These processes, involved while music is being listened to and composed, are defined as the result of implicit and explicit problem-solving processes which are guided in tangible ways by factors of intrinsic activities and motivation, pre-disposed and experience-based structures, and environmental pressure.

Book The New Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning

Download or read book The New Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning written by Music Educators National Conference (U.S.) and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-18 with total page 1249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring chapters by the world's foremost scholars in music education and cognition, this handbook is a convenient collection of current research on music teaching and learning. This comprehensive work includes sections on arts advocacy, music and medicine, teacher education, and studio instruction, among other subjects, making it an essential reference for music education programs. The original Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, published in 1992 with the sponsorship of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), was hailed as "a welcome addition to the literature on music education because it serves to provide definition and unity to a broad and complex field" (Choice). This new companion volume, again with the sponsorship of MENC, explores the significant changes in music and arts education that have taken place in the last decade. Notably, several chapters now incorporate insights from other fields to shed light on multi-cultural music education, gender issues in music education, and non-musical outcomes of music education. Other chapters offer practical information on maintaining musicians' health, training music teachers, and evaluating music education programs. Philosophical issues, such as musical cognition, the philosophy of research theory, curriculum, and educating musically, are also explored in relationship to policy issues. In addition to surveying the literature, each chapter considers the significance of the research and provides suggestions for future study.Covering a broad range of topics and addressing the issues of music education at all age levels, from early childhood to motivation and self-regulation, this handbook is an invaluable resource for music teachers, researchers, and scholars.

This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity and critical thinking are key skills for complex, globalised and increasingly digitalised economies and societies. While teachers and education policy makers consider creativity and critical thinking as important learning goals, it is still unclear to many what it means to develop these skills in a school setting. To make it more visible and tangible to practitioners, the OECD worked with networks of schools and teachers in 11 countries to develop and trial a set of pedagogical resources that exemplify what it means to teach, learn and make progress in creativity and critical thinking in primary and secondary education.

Book Fostering Creativity and Imrpovisation in the Elementary General Music Classroom Using the Orff Approach

Download or read book Fostering Creativity and Imrpovisation in the Elementary General Music Classroom Using the Orff Approach written by David Ian Clerget and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project examined the use of the Orff Approach to foster creativity and improvisation in the elementary general music classroom through study of the extant literature on the topic and generated a presentation to be shared with both in-service and pre-service music educators. The literature stated that most elementary music teachers have had training in improvisation and how to teach it, yet do not include improvisation and creation activities in their lessons. This project also compiled several structured activities that can be used by elementary music teachers to teach improvisation, as well as a brief definition and overview of the Orff Approach and its foundational concepts. The results of this project could be used by elementary music educators to begin teaching improvisation and creation in their classrooms, allowing opportunities for students to express themselves through sound and music and grow in the affective domain of learning.

Book Teaching Music Performance in Higher Education

Download or read book Teaching Music Performance in Higher Education written by Helen Julia Minors and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2024-05-27 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Music Performance Education, as taught and learned in universities and conservatoires in Europe, is undergoing transformation. Since the nineteenth century, the master-apprentice pedagogical model has dominated, creating a learning environment that emphasises the development of technical skills rather than critical and creative faculties. This book contributes to the renewal of this field by being the first to address the potential of artistic research in developing student-centred approaches and greater student autonomy. This potential is demonstrated in chapters illustrating artistic research projects that are embedded within higher music education courses across Europe, with examples ranging from instrumental tuition and ensemble work to the development of professional employability skills and inclusive practices. Bringing together diverse and experienced voices working within Higher Music Education but often also as professional performers, this edited collection pairs critical reflection with artistic insight to present new approaches to curricula for teaching interpretation and performance. It calls for greater collaboration between Higher Education and professional music institutions to create closer bonds with music industries and, thereby, improve students’ career opportunities. Teaching Music Performance in Higher Education will appeal to scholars, performers, teachers, but also students whose interests centre on innovative practices in conservatoires and music departments.

Book Fostering Creativity in Elementary Music Classrooms

Download or read book Fostering Creativity in Elementary Music Classrooms written by Stephanie Dutcher and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper seeks to consolidate information for educators to understand ways that student's improvisation and composition skills change over time as well as to begin to overcome deficiencies in their training of encouraging creativity in the classroom and assessing creativity. In order for educators to have the biggest impact on fostering student creativity in the classroom, they should seek opportunities outside their formal training such as professional development sessions related specifically to improvisation and composition or take part in improvisational and compositional tasks in their personal lives. It was found that improvisational skills can develop whether or not the students have specific training in improvisation, but it is more beneficial to developing compositional skills if students are able to practice composing over the course of time. Certain types of instruction, such as pattern instruction, may be more effective in assisting the developmental of those skills.
