Book Personality and Parenting Predictors of Willingness to Serve as a Foster Parent to Juvenile Sex Offenders

Download or read book Personality and Parenting Predictors of Willingness to Serve as a Foster Parent to Juvenile Sex Offenders written by Anna Louise Makaus-Maleson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the influence of personality traits and parenting styles on willingness to foster juvenile sex offenders. Although clinical interviews are used to screen potential therapeutic foster parents, no screening instruments examine willingness, from a personality or parenting platform, to foster juveniles who sexually offend. Failure to assess for qualified therapeutic foster parents could yield multiple out-of-home placements and psychological damage to the juvenile in foster care. Guided by Bandura's social learning theory, this quantitative study of current and incoming therapeutic foster parents (N = 60) examined personality traits and parenting styles using the NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FRFI-3), the Parent Child Relationship Inventory (PCRI), and the Willingness to Foster Scale-Emotional and Behavioral Problems (WFS-EBP [40] through a multiple regression design. Although there is a research on the nEO-FFi-3 and the PCRI within clinical and research settings, neither instrument has been used in conjunction with the WFS-EBP (40). A multiple regression analysis addressed the strength and influence of five personality traits and three parenting styles as it related to the dependent variable, willingness to foster juvenile sex offenders. The results of this study revealed the personality traits and parenting styles were not significantly related to the dependent variable. Implications for positive social change include an improved foster parent selection process which can lead to increased recruitment and retention rates of foster parents.

Book Stress Well being Retention and Social Support Among Licensed Foster Parents

Download or read book Stress Well being Retention and Social Support Among Licensed Foster Parents written by Elizabeth Sharda and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foster parents are the largest group providing care for some of our most vulnerable children- those in the foster care system. In the course of caring for children who have experienced significant trauma, loss, and uncertainty, foster parents face unique stressors specific to their role. As a result, many leave fostering after only a short period. Though the need for licensed foster parents is high, relatively little is known about the factors that impact their ability to remain in their role, and even less is known about what impacts their well-being within it. The purpose of this study was to use a conceptual model grounded in social support theory to examine the impact that stress and support have on foster parent retention and well-being. Specifically, I investigated the relationships between stressors of fostering and parenting stress, and between parenting stress and two outcome variables: well-being and the intent to continue fostering. Additionally, I examined social support as a potential moderator, or buffer, of each of these relationships. The study utilized a cross-sectional, non-experimental design and web-based survey methodology with a sample of foster parents from one Michigan county (N = 139). In addition to descriptive and bivariate analysis, multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression were used to analyze the identified research questions. Results indicated that there was no relationship between the total number of stressors reported by foster parents and their levels of parenting stress. However, parenting stress was significantly higher among foster parents who reported certain stressors: foster child behavior problems, difficulty obtaining services, and disagreement with a licensing rule or policy. A significant, negative relationship was found between parenting stress and well-being. Additionally, social support did moderate this relationship, suggesting that social support serves as a protective factor for foster parents experiencing parenting stress. No significant relationship was found between parenting stress and the intent to still be fostering in 18 months. However, parenting stress was a significant predictor of past thoughts about giving up fostering. This study contributes to existing literature by adding to the small (but growing) body of quantitative studies conducted with U.S. foster parent populations. Further, the study uses a conceptual framework grounded in social support theory to increase understanding related to the impact of stress and support on foster parent well-being and retention. Among other notable findings, it offers the first known evidence that social support serves in a buffering role for foster parents, protecting their well-being even in the presence of high parenting stress. This has several important implications for this population and the professionals and systems they encounter, including improved foster parent training, assessment, and mentoring. Future studies should be conducted with larger and more representative samples of foster parents, particularly in terms of gender and race. In addition, research dedicated to developing a multidimensional measure of social support specific to foster parents would be particularly valuable.

Book Foster Parent Training Parenting Self efficacy and Positive Parenting Behaviors

Download or read book Foster Parent Training Parenting Self efficacy and Positive Parenting Behaviors written by Kelly N. Mullican and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to provide a greater understanding of the relationships between foster parent training, parenting self-efficacy (PSE), and positive parenting behaviors. This study also aimed to explore some of the challenges that foster parents report in trying to positively parent their foster children. A snowball approach was used to identify past and present foster parents (N = 297) from across the U.S. Participants completed an anonymous, online survey measuring their experience with foster parent training, PSE, and parenting behaviors. Quantitative results indicated different curricula predicted different aspects of PSE, and both Nurturance PSE and Achievement PSE predicted positive parenting behaviors. Qualitative results revealed that the most commonly reported foster parenting challenges were related to foster parenting agencies, child behaviors, and biological families.

Book The Adult Attachment Projective Picture System

Download or read book The Adult Attachment Projective Picture System written by Carol George and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2012-04-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents cutting-edge research on adult attachment together with a complete overview of the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP), the authors' validated developmental assessment. In addition to identifying attachment classification groups, the AAP yields important information about dimensions--including defensive processes--not evaluated by other available measures. Detailed case illustrations show what the AAP looks like "in action" and what it reveals about individuals' early experiences, sense of self, and capacity to engage in close, protective relationships. The AAP can be used in clinical or research settings; the concluding chapter discusses promising applications to studying the neurobiology of attachment.
