Book Forward Phase Conjugate Wave in Degenerate Four Wave Mixing DFWM in Photorefractive Crystalline Slab

Download or read book Forward Phase Conjugate Wave in Degenerate Four Wave Mixing DFWM in Photorefractive Crystalline Slab written by H. Y. Zhang and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DFWM as an useful tool to generate phase conjugate waves has recently been the subject of intensive study. In particular photorefractive crystals such as lithium niobates, potassium niobates, barium titanates and SBN are widely used. Among the published papers on DFWM most are concerned with backward phase conjugate waves and only a few with forward phase conjugate, waves. In both of these papers the intensity of the forward phase conjugate wave has not been investigated. We report here a systematic study of the intensity of forward phase conjugate wave.

Book Degenerate Four wave Mixing and Phase Conjugation in a Collisional Plasma

Download or read book Degenerate Four wave Mixing and Phase Conjugation in a Collisional Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) has many practical applications in the visible regime, no successful attempt has been made to study or demonstrate DFWM for wavelengths longer than 10.mu.m. Recently, Steel and Lam established plasma as a viable DFWM and phase conjugation (PC) medium for infrared, far-infrared, and microwaves. However, their analysis is incomplete since collisional effects were not included. Using a fluid description, our results demonstrate that when collisional absorption is small and the collisional mean-free path is shorter than the nonlinear density grating scale length, collisional heating generates a thermal force which substantially enhances the phase conjugate reflectivity. When the collisional attenuation length becomes comparable to the length of the plasma, the dominant effect is collisional absorption of the pump waves. Numerical estimates of the phase conjugate reflectivity indicate that for modest power levels, gains greater than or equal to1 are possible in the submillimeter to centimeter wavelength range. This suggests that a plasma is a viable PC medium at those long wavelengths. In addition, doubly DFWM is discussed.

Book Optical Phase Conjugation with Photorefractive Sn2P2S6

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation with Photorefractive Sn2P2S6 written by Serguey Odoulov and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking Dynamic Holography Group, Institute of Physics. National Academy of Sciences as follows: The contractor will investigate getting the largest possible phase conjugate reflectivity in Sn2P2S6 by optimizing the usual parameters (such as pump intensity ratio, signal to pump intensity ratio, angle of incidence for pump and probe waves, polarization of interacting waves, orientation of waves with respect to sample principle axes) and frequency shift, a new parameter of special importance of Sn2P2S6. To achieve this the contractor shall perform the following: (1) The backward wave from four wave mixing will be used to generate the phase conjugate waves. Optimum conditions will be found to accomplish this. (2) Study different self-phase conjugate mirrors based on various coherent optical oscillators Optimize the performance of a double phase conjugating mirror. The study shows that SPS crystal can be efficiently used for conjugation of coherent light beams both in traditional backward-wave four-wave mixing geometry and in self-pumped coherent oscillator geometries. The samples belonging to Type I are suitable for conjugation both in the red (He-Ne laser light) and in near infrared (Nd(3+):YAG, 1.06 microns) while samples of Type II can be used for red and shorter infrared (0.8 ... 0.9 microns) region of spectrum. The phase conjugate intensity twice as large as the signal intensity was easily achieved in the red, at lambda = 0.63 microns. It is inevitable that with the same sample and the same refractive index modulation the phase conjugate reflectivity in infrared diminishes as lambda per 2 with the increasing lambda. This decrease can be compensated for by increasing the thickness of the samples used, what is essentially technological and not physical problem. With the available samples we got 17% phase conjugate reflectivity for Nd(3+):YAG, 1.06 microns radiation.

Book Nonlinear Optics and Optical Computing

Download or read book Nonlinear Optics and Optical Computing written by S. Martellucci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference "Nonlinear Optics and Optical Computing" was held May 11-19, 1988 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 13th conference organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. This volume contains both the invited and contributed papers presented at the conference, providing tutorial background, the latest research results, and future directions for the devices, structures and architectures of optical computing. The invention of the transistor and the integrated circuit were followed by an explosion of application as ever faster and more complex microelectronics chips became available. The information revolution occa sioned by digital computers and optical communications is now reaching the limits of silicon semiconductor technology, but the demand for faster com putation is still accelerating. The fundamental limitations of information processing today derive from the performance and cost of three technical factors: speed, density, and software. Optical computation offers the potential for improvements in all three of these critical areas: Speed is provided by the transmission of impulses at optical veloc ities, without the delays caused by parasitic capacitance in the case of conventional electrical interconnects. Speed can also be achieved through the massive parallelism characteristic of many optical computing architec tures; Density can be provided in optical computers in two ways: by high spatial resolution, on the order of wavelengths of light, and by computa tion or interconnection in three dimensions.
