The Vienna express. The Ballarat leaves Brindisi next Sunday, July I 7. It is exactly ten days since I made up my mind, and so far I have not wavered one moment, in spite of, or perhaps because of the manifold oppositions I encountered from all sides. I cannot describe to you the sensation my decision created in this dear old town of Cracow. At first nobody would believe me; they laughed when I spoke of my impending journey, and I could not do otherwise than laugh too: it all seemed so absurd. But when finally they saw that I meant it, oh, ye gods! What an avalanche of reproaches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip Around the World: A Series of Letters We are sure that if all the churches in America could have seen what we saw - the many large churches, and so intensely alive to the interests of the kingdom of our com mon Lord, they could not help but thank God and take courage. It appeared to us that the churches of Australia have, for their years and opportunities, gone beyond what their brethren elsewhere have done. With many fears and some hopes, we venture to send forth these letters to the churches, hoping that they may prove to be at least one link in a golden chain of Christian love and w'orld-wide sympathy, that shall help to bind them all together. We pray that a rich blessing from the great Lord of the harvest may rest upon them, and cause them to minister to the joys of His people, and the salvation of men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of a Girdler, to His Son, Containing the Observations on a Trip Around the World At the request of a number of my fellow travelers and others, who knew I had written this series of letters, I have published this volume. It is proper to say, to those who were not with me on the trip, that my wife, daughter and I, prefaced the Cleveland cruise with a short visit to London, Paris and the Riviera, which, though intensely interesting, was altogether too hurried. We landed in San Francisco February 1, 1912, where we were entertained in royal fashion by the hustling citizens of that marvelous city, who are making preparations for an exposition in '1915, to celebrate the completion of the Panama canal, by what is asserted will be the greatest spectacle ever witnessed on earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Three Continents Something less than two years since, I crossed the Atlan tic, in search of health. Partly to gratify friends, and partly to while away rainy days, I commenced writing letters to'the Louisville Journal; and the favorable manner in which they were received induced me to continue them throughout a tour of eighteen months. At the solicitation of the;same friends, I have collected these letters into a volume, with a hope that those of the public who may read them, may not find them wholly uninteresting. It is almost useless to say, that they are not presented to the world as a book of travels they are simply what the title of the volume declares them to be letters from the celebrated places on the three older conti nents. Written among the scenes they attempt to describe, they give the candid impressions of the moment, 'however these might be Opposed to the ordinarily received opinions. I fear I have often been too frank to be popular; but as; make no pretensions to infallibility, my opinions must pass for what they are worth. The letters on the English seem, even to myself, upon after-perusal, too general, and perhaps too severe, ih their denunciations but as they rec'orded the impressions made upon me at the time, and as I wish to give the letters as they originally appeared, I shall make no alterations. Ifvolume fails, I shall be. Consoled a few, at least will be pleased lasting form; if it succeeds I shall experience which all but especially the young, tion of their countrymen. The author. Book A Trip Around the World

Download or read book A Trip Around the World written by Timothy Coop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip Around the World: A Series of Letters In sending forth from the press books and letters of travel, a verj common statement is made that the letters, etc., were not written or intended for the public eye, but only for the enjoyment of the immediate friends of their writers. Without being able to say just the same thing, this much, however, is literally correct, that neither of the writers of the letters here sent forth, had any idea whatever of publishing a book; scarcely, indeed, of publishing even a series of letters for the Christian Standard, in which they appeared. As they were written and sent off from different parts of the world, it was always with the fear that they were very far below, in their interest and worth, the requirements of such a paper. It is no small gratification to the writers, to find that, where they had feared so much, the readers of the letters have enjoyed so much; and so many of them express a wish to possess them in a permanent form. Such as they are, we send them to the churches, greeting, but with much fear and diffidence. Did the readers know the real difficulties under which they were written, more than common allowance and indulgence would be granted for whatever faults may mar the letters, either in matter or style. So Monadnock came to mean everything that was helpful, healing, and full of quiet, and when I saw him half across New Hampshire he did not fail.
