"The Seven Seas" is one of Kipling's poetry collections, showcasing his diverse range of verse. Key poems in "The Seven Seas" include: 1. **"McAndrew's Hymn":** A tribute to a Scottish engineer, reflecting on the power of technology and the sea. 2. **"The White Man's Burden":** Although not originally part of "The Seven Seas," this poem is often associated with the collection. Book excerpt: An illuminating portrait of a world in ferment after the First world War, and a man seeking an authentic life. Early this century Enrico, a young intellectual, leaves the city of Gorizia with its abundant population and culture, to spend several years living on the Patagonian pampas, alone with his ancient Greek texts, his flocks and, every now and then, a woman. He has been taught by his closest friend, Carlo, a philosopher/poet who commits suicide in his early twenties, to search for an authentic life, free of social falsehoods. But in his search for this unattainable goal, Enrico destroys every chance he has of a normal existence. This is portrait of a world in ferment, a decaying empire shaken by war and revolution, and a life-long search for meaning.

Miami’s most infamous private detective simply doesn’t have time to waste sitting in a car, drinking cold coffee and waiting for excitement that will never come. But the Acme Bonding Company is one of his oldest clients, and when his stand-in falls through, he’s obliged to keep watch himself. A string of warehouse robberies, timed to coincide with hurricanes, has put Miami’s business community on the alert. So when a tropical storm closes in, Acme asks Shayne to keep a lookout for burglars. He waits with his pistol in hand. The burglars enter the warehouse quietly, like professionals, but Shayne still sees them coming—and his trigger finger is itchy. A shootout leaves 1 burglar dead and the others on the lam. But when he searches the city for the rest of the gang, Shayne finds that Miami is about to get hit by something far deadlier than a tropical storm. A Redhead for Mike Shayne is the 47th book in the Mike Shayne Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book Sailing Seven Seas

Download or read book Sailing Seven Seas written by Peter Pigott and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under Canadian Pacific’s red-and-white-checkered flag, the company’s founders, George Stephen and William C. Van Horne, created a rail-sea service from Liverpool to Hong Kong. Boasting sternwheelers, Great Lakes bulk carriers, ferries, and luxurious ocean-going liner leviathans, the Canadian Pacific shipping line sailed around the globe. In both world wars the entire fleet served gallantly as Allied troop carriers. After the Second World War, the company staved off the realities of the jet age for as long as it could, replacing liners with container ships, until what was left of the legendary maritime operation was sold off in 2005. With a witty and informative style, author Peter Pigott evokes not only the nostalgic heyday of ocean travel but reveals a slice of almost-forgotten Canadiana. From the stifling steerage quarters of immigrant ships to the elegant drawing rooms of nautical titans such as the ill-fated Empress of Ireland and the Empress of Asia, from U-boat-haunted convoys to container ships, shore dwellers and old salts alike will be delighted with Sailing Seven Seas.
