Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arrest Conventions, signed in 1952 and 1999, play a fundamental role in the worldwide enforcement of maritime claims. Arrest of ships is one of the most distinctive features of international maritime law. It provides a powerful, efficient and effective means of enforcing maritime claims in rem, obtaining sufficient asset security and preserving property pending substantive proceedings. Ship arrest is, however, also a draconian power that cuts across property rights and can cause considerable commercial harm to shipowning interests. This book provides thematic and comparative analysis from leading international commentators on the most significant legal and policy issues, including practical problems arising from the Arrest Convention texts, as well as the direct implementation or indirect 'translation' of the Arrest Conventions into domestic legal systems. It critically analyses the political and historical development of the Conventions, explores the key concepts underpinning the Arrest Convention frameworks and considers the future of ship arrest.

Download or read book The Argyle of San Antonio written by John C. Kerr and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stately mansion known as the Argyle has a past as storied and fascinating as the Lone Star State itself. From its origins as a home and headquarters of a horse ranch to its transformation into an inn and elegant dining club, and ultimately part of a pathfinding medical research endeavor, the Argyle has been at the center of San Antonio and Texas history since the middle of the nineteenth century. Originally built as a residence in 1860 by Charles Anderson, the Argyle temporarily served as an arsenal for the Confederacy during the Civil War. By the late nineteenth century, siblings Robert and Alice O’Grady operated what became a familiar inn and fine dining establishment for weary travelers and many notable figures, including Gen. John J. “Black Jack” Pershing. During the Great Depression and World War II, the Argyle fell into disrepair. Betty Moorman, whose brother Tom Slick had founded the nonprofit Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, rescued the Argyle from the brink of demolition and converted it into a fine dining club whose members would provide financial support for the research institute. Today the Argyle continues to serve and support the mission of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, making important contributions to understanding and developing treatments for infectious diseases and cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and other common diseases. This book not only contributes to the story of San Antonio’s history but is also a treasured and informative keepsake for those who support and continue to benefit from the Argyle and its larger mission.

Book Machiavelli and Empire

Download or read book Machiavelli and Empire written by Mikael Hörnqvist and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-25 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mikael Hörnqvist challenges us to rethink the overall meaning and importance of Machiavelli's political thinking. Machiavelli and Empire combines close textual analysis of The Prince and The Discourses with a broad historical approach, to establish the importance of empire-building and imperial strategy in Machiavelli's thought. The primary context of Machiavelli's work, Hörnqvist argues, is not the mirror-for-princes genre or medieval and Renaissance republicanism in general, but a tradition of Florentine imperialist republicanism dating back to the late thirteenth-century, based on the twin notions of liberty at home and empire abroad. Weaving together themes and topics drawn from contemporary Florentine political debate, Medicean ritual and Renaissance triumphalism, this study explores how Machiavelli in his chancery writings and theoretical works promoted the long standing aspirations of Florence to become a great and expanding empire, modelled on the example of the ancient Roman republic. This is a distinctive and important work.

Book Saving San Antonio

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lewis F. Fisher
  • Publisher : Trinity University Press
  • Release : 2016-08-22
  • ISBN : 159534781X
  • Pages : 508 pages

Download or read book Saving San Antonio written by Lewis F. Fisher and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few American cities enjoy the likes of San Antonio's visual links with its dramatic past. The Alamo and four other Spanish missions, recently marked as a UNESCO World Heritage site, are the most obvious but there are a host of landmarks and folkways that have survived over the course of nearly three centuries that still lend San Antonio an "odd and antiquated foreignness." Adding to the charm of the nation's seventh largest city is the San Antonio River, saved to become a winding linear park through the heart of downtown and beyond and a world model for sensitive urban development. San Antonio's heritage has not been preserved by accident. The wrecking balls and headlong development that accompanied progress in nineteenth-century San Antonio roused an indigenous historic preservation movement—the first west of the Mississippi River to become effective. Its thrust has increased since the mid-1920s with the pioneering work of the San Antonio Conservation Society. In Saving San Antonio, Texas historian Lewis Fisher peels back the myths surrounding more than a century of preservation triumphs and failures to reveal a lively mosaic that portrays the saving of San Antonio's cultural and architectural soul. The process, entertaining in the telling, has reverberated throughout the United States and provided significant lessons for the built environments and economies of cities everywhere.

Book Associated Ship and South African Admiralty Jurisdiction

Download or read book Associated Ship and South African Admiralty Jurisdiction written by Malcolm Wallis and published by Siber Ink. This book was released on 2010-01-27 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Admiralty Jurisdiction Regulation Act 105 of 1983 was a radical and far-reaching, as well as overdue, modernisation of South African admiralty law. Described as 'bold, innovative and comprehensive', it introduced - for the first time anywhere in the world - the provisions enabling an action to be pursued by way of the arrest of an associated ship rather than the ship in respect of which the claim lay. This work, by one of South Africa's pre-eminent shipping lawyers, analyses the nature of this novel action. That involves a review of how the jurisdiction came about; its nature and impact; the problems to which it gives rise and the making of some modest suggestions concerning the road ahead.
