Book Fortune Favors the Bold

Download or read book Fortune Favors the Bold written by Lester C. Thurow and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author and renowned economist Lester Thurow argues forcefully that globalization is not a done deal and we must seize the moment now if we are to create a new global economy in which all can prosper. In this new book, Thurow examines the newly–forming global economy, with a special focus on the role of the US and the dangers to our own national well–being. He examines such questions as: What's at stake for us in the global economy? Why is it important that the system be equitable and that other countries prosper along with us? What should our goals as a nation be – long term and short term? What are the tough choices that need to be made in our relationship with other countries and world regulatory bodies? What role should we be playing globally? What are the political, economic, social choices / tradeoffs we will have to confront? Thurow contends that the huge and growing US trade deficit poses grave dangers to the value of the dollar and is putting our own economy in jeopardy. As the world economy leaps national boundaries, its hallmark seems to be a rising instability and a growing inequality between the first and third worlds. Financial crises in the third world come ever more frequently and seem to be ever more severe. The first world economies seem to be in ever more frantic boom and bust cycles. Globalization causes riots throughout the world and is one factor in the rise of terrorism against the West. Thurow shows how some nations, including Ireland and China, have embraced the concept of globalization and placed themselves into a position to prosper with growing and productive national economies. He contrasts their positive actions with Japan, whose leaders have allowed the nation to drift into stagnation and have destroyed its prosperity. He argues that this is the time to choose globalization or be left behind, the time to "build a global economy that eliminates the defects," and he provides plenty of ideas for corporations, governments, economists, and citizens to act upon.

Book Mutiny and Its Bounty

Download or read book Mutiny and Its Bounty written by Patrick J. Murphy and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVViolent mutiny was common in seafaring enterprises during the Age of Discovery—so common, in fact, that dealing with mutineers was an essential skill for captains and other leaders of the time. Mutinies in today’s organizations are much quieter, more social and intellectual, and far less violent, yet the coordinated defiance of authority springs from dissatisfactions very similar to those of long-ago shipboard crews. This highly original book mines seafaring logs and other archives of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century ship captains and discovers instructive lessons for today’s leaders facing challenges to their authority as well as for other members of organizations in which mutinous events occur. The book begins by examining mutinies against great explorer captains of the Age of Discovery: Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, Sebastian Cabot, and Henry Hudson. The authors then identify lessons that entrepreneurs, leaders, and other members may apply to organizational insurrections today. They find, surprisingly, that mutiny may be a force for good in an organization, paving the way to more collaborative leadership and stronger commitment to shared goals and values./div

Download or read book Citizen General written by Eugene D. Schmiel and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wrenching events of the Civil War transformed not only the United States but also the men unexpectedly called on to lead their fellow citizens in this first modern example of total war. Jacob Dolson Cox, a former divinity student with no formal military training, was among those who rose to the challenge. In a conflict in which “political generals” often proved less than competent, Cox, the consummate citizen general, emerged as one of the best commanders in the Union army. During his school days at Oberlin College, no one could have predicted that the intellectual, reserved, and bookish Cox possessed what he called in his writings the “military aptitude” to lead men effectively in war. His military career included helping secure West Virginia for the Union; jointly commanding the left wing of the Union army at the critical Battle of Antietam; breaking the Confederate supply line and thereby helping to precipitate the fall of Atlanta; and holding the defensive line at the Battle of Franklin, a Union victory that effectively ended the Confederate threat in the West. At a time when there were few professional schools other than West Point, the self-made man was the standard for success; true to that mode, Cox fashioned himself into a Renaissance man. In each of his vocations and avocations—general, governor, cabinet secretary, university president, law school dean, railroad president, historian, and scientist—he was recognized as a leader. Cox’s greatest fame, however, came to him as the foremost participant historian of the Civil War. His accounts of the conflict are to this day cited by serious scholars and serve as a foundation for the interpretation of many aspects of the war.

Book Fluency and Reading Comprehension in Typical Readers and Dyslexic Readers Volume II

Download or read book Fluency and Reading Comprehension in Typical Readers and Dyslexic Readers Volume II written by Manuel Soriano-Ferrer and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-03-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is the second edition of Fluency and reading comprehension in typical readers and dyslexics readers: Volume I This Second Edition Research Topic is focused on the characterization of the reading-writing difficulties and their comorbidities and in the analysis of evidence-based recommendations for early interventions and treatment of these difficulties within the fields of neuropsychology, speech-language pathology, and educational psychology. Reading involves decoding and comprehension components, and to become efficient it requires a large number of cognitive and linguistic processes. Among those, decoding failures can have different origins, such as deficits in phonological and/or visual processing. In addition, a child with reading difficulties might also have problems in the acquisition of writing and handwriting performance. This is an important point to be discussed, as reading and writing both suffer interference from vocabulary acquisition, linguistic skills, memory skills, reading and writing practices, and literacy methods. These processes become important only when the professional needs to deal with students presenting learning difficulties. Difficulty in using the knowledge of conversion rules between grapheme-phoneme to word reading construction or phoneme-grapheme for writing can be identified in schoolchildren with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dysortography, being a specific learning disorder with a neurological etiology. In addition, there is established evidence of a speech-language processing basis, students with specific learning disabilities can show a range of cognitive difficulties (e.g., rapid naming, executive functioning, working memory). These presented difficulties interfere in their learning process, impairing their learning development.

Book excerpt: Spanning the days leading up to July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress prepares to debate the wisdom of seeking independence from their British masters. While most enlightened thinkers believe reconciliation will soon replace confrontation, negotiations between the two sides are continuing peacefully. On the surface the enlightened thinkers appear to be correct; however, both British and colonial leaders continue to make plans to the contrary. While the British continue to secretly assemble the largest naval armada in history, a shadowy plot has emerged from the highest levels of their government: an order to strike a decisive first blow and cut off the head of the snake.Patrick Rourke, a notorious and wealthy Philadelphia Tory, and his exotic mistress, Lydia Ames, are working with British agents on a sinister plot. Their goal is simple: to eliminate the leadership of the fledgling rebellion. In the meantime, members of the Second Continental Congress's Secret Committee have set in motion a bold plan to seek French military aid for the coming conflict. A ship full of gold is on its way to France to secure the deal. Unfortunately, the small committee has been compromised, and word of the shipment has fallen into the wrong hands. With the looming revolution in the background, we find our reluctant hero, Benjamin Cushman, thrust into the middle of the coming storm. Cushman decides to visit his best friend from childhood, Thomas Jefferson, only to be caught in the middle of the notorious British assassination plot. The assassination attempt is the springboard and culmination of various subplots set against the actual documented historical records of the weeks leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historical fiction novel allows the reader to follow our Founding Fathers during one of the most crucial weeks in our history, the week leading up to the Fourth of July. It will expose the reader to the process, pressure, and politics that led to the courageous signing of the Declaration of Independence and perhaps the greatest closing line in human history, as the signers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor for a simple yet powerful idea—freedom.

Book The Ingoldsby Legends Volume 1

Download or read book The Ingoldsby Legends Volume 1 written by Richard Harris Barham and published by SpringStreet Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With eighty-eight distinct editions and some 450,000 licensed copies in print, The Ingoldsby Legends of Richard Harris Barham (writing as Thomas Ingoldsby) was among the most beloved and most quoted works of nineteenth-century English literature. Long out of print, it is now available in a fully annotated two-volume edition, complete with over a hundred illustrations by John Tenniel, George Cruikshank, George Du Maurier, John Leech, Arthur Rackham and others. "For inexhaustible fun that never gets flat and scarcely ever simply uproarious, for a facility and felicity in rhyme and rhythm which is almost miraculous, and for a blending of the grotesque and the terrible . no one competent to judge and enjoy will ever go to Barham in vain." - George Saintsbury, A History of Nineteenth Century Literature "In the growth of English short fiction Barham's work looms larger yet. Many a good story and tale are scattered through the corpus of English fiction prior to the 1830s, but it is not, I think, an exaggeration to claim Barham as the first consistent English writer of the true short story." - Wendall V. Harris, British Short Fiction in the Nineteenth Century "Richard Barham was a genuine poet, who exerts a peculiar spell. A man of some property in Kent, a minor canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, an amateur but learned antiquary, he wrote mainly to amuse himself, and his verse has a spontaneity of unexpected rhyming and reckless imagination that makes it different from anybody else's . Barham was gifted with some special genius which makes his meters and rhyming as catching as music, so that they run in your head after reading." - Edmund Wilson, "The Devils and Canon Barham" "Popular phrases, the most prosaic sentences, the cramped technicalities of legal diction, and snatches of various languages are worked in with an apparent absence of all art or effort; not a word seems out of place, not an expression forced, whilst syllables the most intractable find the only partners fitted for them throughout the range of our language. These Legends have often been imitated, but never equalled." - Walter Hamilton, Parodies of the Works of English and American Authors "Barham brought exceptional qualities to the development of his particular art. He was a wit, and his initial success was won by his startling originality. Not only did he adapt the Gallic spirit and conte to the exigencies of the English language: his blending of saints and demons, ghosts and abbots, monkish legend and romance, antiquarian lore and classical knowledge, murder and crime, with his own freakish and whimsical sense of humour, his lightning leaps from grave to gay, his quaint verbal quips, his wealth of topical allusion and most bizarre rhymes - all combined to secure him immediate attention and resultant fame." - Stewart Marsh Ellis, Mainly Victorian

Book excerpt: In this all-consuming, suspenseful story, a stay-at-home father with something to prove finds a wealthy Wall Street investor's body washed up on the shore—and decides to take the investigation into his own hands: "smart, clever, and has something to say" (Michael Connelly). Peter Greene spends his days taking care of his toddler, Luke; staying on the right side of The Moms in his local beach town; and hanging out with his surf buddy, Frank. Isolated from his former life in finance, and frustrated by his current “out of work” existence, he worries that if he sits around the house for much longer, his workaholic wife might start to lose patience with him. He has few escapes aside from surfing and the love he has for his son. But when the body of wealthy Wall Street investor Robert Townsend washes up on shore one morning, nothing about the incident makes sense to Pete, and he’s completely bewildered when the death is ruled an accidental drowning. But when he takes his concerns to the police, they ignore him—so he decides to investigate on his own. Sustained only by the unquestioning devotion of his three-year-old sidekick, Pete starts looking into Townsend’s eccentric relatives and employer, the ruthless and secretive private equity firm GDR. But has Pete deluded himself with this misguided quest for redemption? Or has he uncovered something sinister enough to risk his life, and even his family? A Rough Way to Go is a raw, irreverent story that plumbs the depths of masculinity, unemployment, fatherhood, marriage, and modern capitalism—and the struggle to live a purpose driven life.
