Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive scholarly study of religious images in popular music. Examining bestsellers from 1906 to 1971, the work explores the role religious images have in the secularization of American culture. Popular music lyrics that express an adherence to a sacred order are couched in inoffensive, content-less language. These lyrics of civility reflect and shape the increasing secularization of American culture in the twentieth century. The analysis focuses primarily on the way these lyrics reduce the meaning of the terms and theology of the Biblical faith. The aesthetic of civility carries over into theology, the narratives, and the accompanying instrumental arrangements of songs that adhere to the Biblical sacred order. On the other hand, lyrics that reject the Biblical tradition use content-filled, offensive language. The result is that displaced adherents withdraw from the Biblical tradition and turn to alternative cultural religions, or idols of attraction, including popular music, that offer meaning to fill a void in the individual. The secularization of American society, therefore, is not a withdrawal from the idea of religion itself. The analysis focuses on the two dominant themes in songs that include religious images: prayer and heaven. The author explores the songs of the two world wars, the hit parade era, the rhythm and blues and doo-wop of the 1950s, the new folk singer movement, soul music and rock music of the 1960s, and the revival rock of the early 1970s. The work demonstrates the capacity of one form of popular culture to separate adherents from a subculture through diluting the meaning of the language of the subculture's elemental thought. (Ph.D. dissertation, Bowling Green State University, 1994; revised with new preface, bibliography, and index)

Book Fortha s Lyrics and Other Poems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fortha's Lyrics and Other Poems: With a Descriptive Account of South Queensferry and Its Surroundings HE deference due to the public in presuming to come before them as an author, seems to me to require an apology, viz., that although the Descriptive Matter and Poems have not the polish of the man of letters, or the refinement of a highly-cultivated mind, yet they may pos sess a something in their sentiment, or teach a moral in their aim, that may be both instructive and amusing, -may be an incentive to the young to cultivate a habit of study in their youth, which may in individual cases lead to great results in after years. Let me press this upon the attention of my youthful readers. There is nothing I regret so much as having to a great extent neglected my studies in my youthful years. I may have done wrong in so presuming to come before the public; but whether or not remains to be seen. I have been advised to do so by a large circle of friends and acquaintances who, because they admired my pieces them selves, thought, I daresay, that every one else would do the same; but, as the Scotch proverb has it, The proof 0' the pudding is the precin' o't. I now lay before the reader my musings on the work-stool, in the solitude of the lonely woods, in the silent glen, or in my old arm-chair when the wife and weans were snugly locked in the arms of Morpheus, - very many of them written on the spur of the moment, and hurried off to the news papers before they were properly revised. Therefore I solicit the reader to give my volume a fair and candid perusal. Be not too hard in your criticisms; consider the position of the writer, viz., an all-but illiterate working shoemaker; yet that any good it contains may be carefully selected, stored up, and made profitable, is the sincere wish of the author, and therein lies his chief and great reward. The reader must understand that nearly all the pieces of poetry in this volume were published in the local journals, and very many of them written in connection with South Queensferry and its neighbourhood. The introductory matter, descriptive of Queensferry and its glorious surroundings, I hope may amuse as well as instruct. Book Composing for the Revolution

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Composing for the Revolution: Nie Er and China’s Sonic Nationalism, Joshua Howard explores the role the songwriter Nie Er played in the 1930s proletarian arts movement and the process by which he became a nationalist icon. Composed only months before his untimely death in 1935, Nie Er’s last song, the “March of the Volunteers,” captured the rising anti-Japanese sentiment and was selected as China’s national anthem with the establishment of the People’s Republic. Nie was quickly canonized after his death and later recast into the “People’s Musician” during the 1950s, effectively becoming a national monument. Howard engages two historical paradigms that have dominated the study of twentiethcentury China—revolution and modernity. He argues that active in the leftist artistic community and critical of capitalism, Nie Er availed himself of media technology, especially the emerging sound cinema, to create a modern, revolutionary, and nationalist music. This thesis stands as a powerful corrective to a growing literature on the construction of a Chinese modernity, which has privileged the mass consumer culture of Shanghai and consciously sought to displace the focus on China’s revolutionary experience. Composing for the Revolution also provides insight into understudied aspects of China’s nationalism—its sonic and musical dimensions. Howard’s analyses highlights Nie’s extensive writings on the political function of music, examination of the musical techniques and lyrics of compositions within the context of left-wing cinema, and also the transmission of his songs through film, social movements, and commemoration. Nie Er shared multiple and overlapping identities based on regionalism, nationalism, and left-wing internationalism. His march songs, inspired by Soviet “mass songs,” combined Western musical structure and aesthetic with elements of Chinese folk music. The songs’ ideological message promoted class nationalism, but his “March of the Volunteers” elevated his music to a universal status thereby transcending the nation. Traversing the life and legacy of Nie Er, Howard offers readers a profound insight into the meanings of nationalism and memory in contemporary China. Composing for the Revolution underscores the value of careful reading of sources and the author’s willingness to approach a subject from multiple perspectives.

Book Language Mixing and Code Switching in Writing

Download or read book Language Mixing and Code Switching in Writing written by Mark Sebba and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Code-switching," or the alternation of languages by bilinguals, has attracted an enormous amount of attention from researchers. However, most research has focused on spoken language, and the resultant theoretical frameworks have been based on spoken code-switching. This volume presents a collection of new work on the alternation of languages in written form. Written language alternation has existed since ancient times. It is present today in a great deal of traditional media, and also exists in newer, less regulated forms such as email, SMS messages, and blogs. Chapters in this volume cover both historical and contemporary language-mixing practices in a large range of language pairs and multilingual communities. The research collected here explores diverse approaches, including corpus linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, literacy studies, ethnography, and analyses of the visual/textual aspects of written data. Each chapter, based on empirical research of multilingual writing, presents methodological approaches as models for other researchers. New perspectives developed in this book include: analysis specific to written, rather than spoken, discourse; approaches from the new literacy studies, treating mixed-language literacy from a practice perspective; a focus on both "traditional" and "new" media types; and the semiotics of both text and the visual environment.

Book Gender Meets Genre in Postwar Cinemas

Download or read book Gender Meets Genre in Postwar Cinemas written by Christine Gledhill and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-01-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable collection uses genre as a fresh way to analyze the issues of gender representation in film theory, film production, spectatorship, and the contexts of reception. With a uniquely global perspective, these essays examine the intersection of gender and genre in not only Hollywood films but also in independent, European, Indian, and Hong Kong cinemas. Working in the area of postcolonial cinema, contributors raise issues dealing with indigenous and global cinemas and argue that contemporary genres have shifted considerably as both notions of gender and forms of genre have changed. The volume addresses topics such as the history of feminist approaches to the study of genre in film, issues of female agency in postmodernity, changes taking place in supposedly male-dominated genres, concepts of genre and its use of gender in global cinema, and the relationship between gender and sexuality in film. Contributors are Ira Bhaskar, Steven Cohan, Luke Collins, Pam Cook, Lucy Fischer, Jane Gaines, Christine Gledhill, Derek Kane-Meddock, E. Ann Kaplan, Samiha Matin, Katie Model, E. Deidre Pribram, Vicente Rodriguez Ortega, Adam Segal, Chris Straayer, Yvonne Tasker, Deborah Thomas, and Xiangyang Chen.

Book Poems for the Rest of Us

Download or read book Poems for the Rest of Us written by Julian I Taber and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-09 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I try to write for the non-poet, for the educated average person who seldom reads a poem just because it is a poem, or because poetry is supposed to be mind-expanding. To entertain is, I think, the primary reason poetry exists at all. I suggest you not try to lap up a book of poetry in one sitting. Just feed yourself a poem or two once you've done something useful like mow the lawn, cook dinner, or study your favorite software manual. Poetry must be taken sparingly to avoid a certain painful mental bloat not unlike the physical feelings that come from over-consumption of Napoleon rum balls or chocolate éclairs. So, here's to having fun with words.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A social history of salsa in Colombia. Winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Popular Music Books (2002) Winner of the Society for Ethnomusicology's (SEM) Alan P. Merriam Prize (2003) Salsa is a popular dance music developed by Puerto Ricans in New York City during the 1960s and 70s, based on Afro-Cuban forms. By the 1980s, the Colombian metropolis of Cali emerged on the global stage as an important center for salsa consumption and performance. Despite their geographic distance from the Caribbean and from Hispanic Caribbean migrants in New York City, Caleños (people from Cali) claim unity with Cubans, Puerto Ricans and New York Latinos by virtue of their having adopted salsa as their own. The City of Musical Memory explores this local adoption of salsa and its Afro-Caribbean antecedents in relation to national and regional musical styles, shedding light on salsa's spread to other Latin American cities. Cali's case disputes the prevalent academic notion that live music is more "real" or "authentic" than its recorded versions, since in this city salsa recordings were until recently much more important than musicians themselves, and continued to be influential in the live scene. This book makes valuable contributions to ongoing discussions about the place of technology in music culture and the complex negotiations of local and transnational cultural identities.
