Book John Fowler Benjamin Baker Forth Bridge

Download or read book John Fowler Benjamin Baker Forth Bridge written by Iain Boyd Whyte and published by Edition Axel Menges. This book was released on 1997 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Forth Bridge opened on 4 March 1890 it was the longest railway bridge in the world and the first large structure made of steel. Crossing the wide Firth of Forth east of Edinburgh, it represents one of the greatest engineering triumphs of Victorian Britain, man's victory over the intractable topography of land and water. Not surprisingly, such a vigorous rebuff of the natural order was condemned at the time by those late Victorians who resisted the march of technology, and William Morris described the Bridge as the »supremest specimen of all ugliness«. In response, Benjamin Baker insisted that its beauty lay in its functional elegance. Contrasting his masterpiece with the only comparable structure of the period, the Eiffel Tower, he concluded: »The Eiffel Tower is a foolish piece of work, ugly, illproportioned and of no real use to anyone.

Book excerpt: Thinking Forth applies a philosophy of problem solving and programming style to the unique programming language Forth. Published first in 1984, it could be among the timeless classics of computer books, such as Fred Brooks' The Mythical Man-Month and Donald Knuth's The Art of Computer Programming. Many software engineering principles discussed here have been rediscovered in eXtreme Programming, including (re)factoring, modularity, bottom-up and incremental design. Here you'll find all of those and more, such as the value of analysis and design, described in Leo Brodie's down-to-earth, humorous style, with illustrations, code examples, practical real life applications, illustrative cartoons, and interviews with Forth's inventor, Charles H. Moore as well as other Forth thinkers.

Book excerpt: Mainstream physics currently contends that only 4% of our Universe is made of normal matter and energy. The remaining 96% is thought to be mysterious dark matter and dark energy that are not at all understood. This presents a quandary relative to Einstein’s observation: “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.” Using judicious analogies, dry humor, and the established laws of physics, Ron Forth presents a new cosmological paradigm, honouring the principles of classical physics and relativity while examining the astronomical observations and ensuing inferences from a fresh perspective. Beginning by replacing curved spacetime with contoured four-dimensional space-energy, a new theory of gravity is developed. Using logical and mathematical arguments, he explains how forces, inertia, and entropy arise within this framework. Topics including black holes, gravitational waves, unification of the four fundamental forces, and the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics are touched upon in the context of the model. He shines a light on dark matter and dark energy, potentially dispelling their shadows. A possible ultimate fate of the Universe, a topic of interest to most of its inhabitants, is proposed. Covering the life of the Universe in a compact book, The Forth Dimension may prove revolutionary – or not - but it will hopefully provoke further discussion of our understanding of the Universe. The objective is for professional scientists to consider the implications of the philosophy, hypotheses, and analysis presented. Various tests are proposed to experimentally determine whether the ideas are science or science fiction.

Book Forth and Back

Download or read book Forth and Back written by Cintia Santana and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forth and Back broadens the scope of Hispanic trans-Atlantic studies by shifting its focus to Spain's trans-literary exchange with the United States at the end of the twentieth century. Santana analyzes the translation "boom" of U.S. literature that marked literary production in Spain after Franco's death, and the central position that U.S. writing came to occupy within the Spanish literary system. Santana examines the economic and literary motives that underlay the phenomenon, as well as the particular socio-cultural appeal that U.S. "dirty realist" writers--which in Spain included authors as diverse as Charles Bukowski, Raymond Carver, and Bret Easton Ellis--held for Spaniards in the 1980s. Santana also studies the subsequent appropriation of this writing by a polemic group of young Spanish writers in the 1990s whoself-consciously and insistently associated themselves with the U.S.. Forth and Back illustrates that literary movements do not unilaterally spread; rather, those that flourish take root in fertile soil and are transformed in their travel by the desires, creative choices, and practical constraints of their differing producers and consumers. It is precisely in the crossing of these currents that plots thicken. The translation of dirty realism, its reception in Spain, and its cultural legacy as appropriated by the young Spanish writers, serve to interrogate a perceived U.S. hegemony. If Spanish realismo sucio has been said to be symptomatic of the globalization of literature, Forth and Back argues that the Spanish works in question posed a subtle reaffirmation of Spanish literature's strong ties to realist fiction, a gesture of continuity in a decade that seemed to presence the undoing of much of Spain's "Spanish-ness." Ultimately, this project asks an ambitious pair of questions at the heart of human culture: how do we "read" each other, quite literally, across geography and language? How do we construct others and ourselves vis- -vis those readings?

Book excerpt: Themajority of American churches are stalled or in decline. Church Come Forth is a strategic model for renewing andrevitalizing plateaued and dying churches into prevailing and growingcongregations. Todd Hudnall combines Biblical insights, church revitalizationresearch and his experience as a turnaround pastor to provide a guidebook for transformation. It is God's desire to renew His church and most church leaders will find thisplan a Godsend in effectively revitalizing their congregations. Steve Pike, Director of the Church Multiplication Network says: Three words came to mind when I read Church Come Forth by Todd Hudnall - Biblical, Practical, Real. Biblical - A book about God's Church would be useless if not filled with wisdom from God's Book! Hudnall carefully makes the Biblical case for revitalization, unpacking scripture after scripture to lay a firm foundation for why and how a drifting church can once again join God on His mission. Practical - Todd Hudnall is a seasoned and successful practitioner whose walk aligns with his talk. His counsel is based on the best research and his actual experience of applying that research. As a result, Church Come Forth is loaded with great advice that is tried and true. Real - Todd's honesty about his personal growing pains is refreshing. His diverse experience in churches small and large make his counsel relatable to every pastor. He writes as a pastor friend writing to a pastor friend. Church Come Forth is a must read for every leader of a plateaued or declining church.
