Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort St. George, Madras: A Short History of Our First Possession in India I have consulted various books in compiling this little history, Talboys Wheeler's and Orme's in particular. But the most valuable sources from which I have drawn have been the records of Fort St. George which are kept in Madras. Through the courtesy of the Honorable Mr. G. Stokes, Chief Secretary, 1 have been able to consult the original papers from which Wheeler drew his information. I have also had access to the register books of St. Mary's through the kindness of the Reverend F. Penny, Garrison Chaplain of Fort St. George. My best thanks are due to these gentlemen, as well as to Mr. Sim of the Madras Civil Service to whom I am indebted for the interesting maps here reproduced; to Colonel Routh and Arthur E. Lawson, Esq., who have photographed the church and plate expressly for this book; and to Mr. J. Kelsall (madras Civil Service retired) who has read the proofs and added some notes under his initials [1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British rule of India brought together two very different traditions of scholarship about language, whose conjuncture led to several intellectual breakthroughs of lasting value. Two of these were especially important: the conceptualization of the Indo-European language family by Sir William Jones at Calcutta in 1786—proposing that Sanskrit is related to Persian and languages of Europe—and the conceptualization of the Dravidian language family of South India by F.W. Ellis at Madras in 1816—the "Dravidian proof," showing that the languages of South India are related to one another but are not derived from Sanskrit. These concepts are valid still today, centuries later. This book continues the examination Thomas R. Trautmann began in Aryans and British India (1997). While the previous book focused on Calcutta and Jones, the current volume examines these developments from the vantage of Madras, focusing on Ellis, Collector of Madras, and the Indian scholars with whom he worked at the College of Fort St. George, making use of the rich colonial record. Trautmann concludes by showing how elements of the Indian analysis of language have been folded into historical linguistics and continue in the present as unseen but nevertheless living elements of the modern.

Book excerpt: This book marks a decade of a column that appears every Monday in The Hindu's Metro Plus, Madras edition. Madras Miscellany has, over that decade, created an awareness and a greater appreciation of the significant past of Madras and of the events and the people who over the years made Madras "the first city of modern India", a description of the City the writer of the column, S.Muthiah, never tires of reiterating. Over a 1500 or so items that appeared in the 514 columns published during Madras Miscellany's first decade appear in the book in three sections:'People', 'Places' and 'Potpourri', the last named being everything else that doesn't fit into the other two sections. And in them there develops a rather comprehensive story of Madras over its nearly 375 years of history. In sum, this is a book for anyone interested in the development of Madras and its considerable contribution to modern India.
