Download or read book Fort Moody Blues written by Leonard Johnsen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-11-13 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fort Moody Blues is the poignant if somewhat irreverent tale of a small Oklahoma town back in the early 70’s, the simple folk who live there and their doggedness when forced to deal with pain and uncertainty. While Sheriff Cobb, Bobby Lee, Rhonda and Dwayne might drive the story, it actually revolves around others, particularly an abusive father and an old bluesman. The novel is a moving testimony to life in middle America. It explores the prevalent attitudes and the ways in which people interact in a small community when faced with hardship. The story is thought-provoking with just enough loose ends to make the novel satisfying, not contrived.
Download or read book The Ditch Digger The Life of J Fletcher Creamer III written by Leonard Johnsen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-11-29 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description Those of us who once ventured up to Palisades Amusement Park on a hot summer’s evening and passed through its brightly painted portal knew right away we were entering a different world. The uncertain feeling in the pit of our stomachs coupled with a flutter in our chests meant that life as we once knew it was about to change, at least for a while anyway. As we hurried along the bustling midway, heads turning, eyes flashing, nothing seemed quite real, as if everything was being viewed through a prism. The cacophony of sounds, the blinking lights and the suffocating smells were both offensive and seductive. The Cyclone roller coaster was scary but who cared. We stood in line to ride it again and again, yet another chance to throw up our hands and scream at the top of our lungs. And unlike Moses standing on the mount with a view of the Promised Land he would not enter, for a mere pittance, everyone was welcomed into Palisades Amusement Park–man, woman, even child if accompanied by an adult. Now, like those thrilling days of yesteryear, we are again about to enter another different world. It is the world of a most remarkable man who has lived a most remarkable life. J. Fletcher Creamer, III, has graciously left an indelible mark on everything he has accomplished and on everyone he has met. And while Palisades Amusement Park is now just a fond memory, Fletch goes on doing what he does best–being Fletch–unpretentious yet larger-than-life. As Shakespeare might have put it, age cannot wither Fletch Creamer. Yet just like the wind, mortal life is a moan, a sigh, a sob, a storm, a strife. And like Palisades Park’s mighty Cyclone, Fletch’s life has endured its share of ups and downs, its own particular twists and turns. That is perhaps what makes his story so compelling, one that must be shared. So, as the park attendant once hollered just before pulling the lever that unleashed the Cyclone’s immense power, “Hold on tight, folks. You’re in for the ride of your life.”

Download or read book Gathered From Coincidence written by Tony Dunsbee and published by M-Y Books Limited. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining the personal memories and critical analysis of a self-confessed pop addict with a wealth of contemporary documentary evidence, Gathered From Coincidence reconstructs a truly momentous era to tell the story of the music of the Sixties year by year. By tracing in parallel the origins and development of the recording careers of major talents on both sides of the Atlantic - the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Dusty Springfield and many more besides - this account shows how they traded creativity with one another. All the great Sixties' hits - as well as a host of less well-known gems - are described in the context of the charts of the day, tracking the ups and downs of different trends as they came and went, such as: rock'n'roll, rhythm & blues, psychedelia, modern folk, the concept album or supergroups. But beyond this, each chapter also places the music in a broader historical and cultural setting of landmark events at home and abroad - the space race, the Profumo affair, the Cold War, Vietnam, the growth of satire - to show how, as the decade unfolded, the paths of pop and current affairs drew ever closer together. If you thought the Sixties were just about the fleeting dreams of hippies in the Summer of Love, then think again! This book will open your eyes to a far-reaching imaginative legacy and how it came to shape pop music as a dazzling art form in its own right.
Download or read book Hopeful Realism in Urban Ministry written by Barry K. Morris and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, pray tell, does a faithful urban ministry require if not a triadic relationship of prayer, justice, and hope? Could such a theologically conjunctive relationship of prayer, justice, and hope fortify urban ministry and challenge students and practitioners to ponder and practice beyond the box? Frequently, justice is collapsed to charity, hope into wishful thinking or temporarily arrested despair, and prayer a grasp at quick-fix interventions. An urban ministry's steadfast public and prophetic witness longs for the depth and width of this triad. Via three countries' decades of endeavors, one chapter brainstorms urban ministry practices while another's literature survey signals crucial convictions. Amid many, seminal theologians are summoned to ground urban ministry intimations and implications: Niebuhr on justice, Moltmann on hope, and Merton on contemplative prayer. Evident is passion that fuels compassion in the service of justice, hope that engages despair, and prayer that draws from the contemplative center of it all--thankful resources for long haul ministry. The triad presses to illumine a concrete ministry's engagement of relentless, forced option issues yet with significant networks resourcing. Contrast-awareness animates endurance. The summary exegetes the original grace-based serenity prayer. Hence, hope vitally balances realism's temptation to cynicism. Realism saves hope from irrelevancy.
