Book Forty Minutes by the Delaware

Download or read book Forty Minutes by the Delaware written by Lee P. Anderson and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1999-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1777, things looked dark for the fledgling country known as the United States of America fighting for Independence. The young and inexperienced Continental soldiers had fought bravely, but ineffectively against the British and their allies the Hessians. The enemy had captured Philadelphia and the powerful British navy flotilla, loaded with troops and supplies was making it's way up the Delaware to bring much needed relief to the beleaguered population of the capital city. But General Washington had vowed, "The enemy may have taken Philadelphia. But now let them hold it. It may in fact become their downfall." The plans were to erect a series of three river fortifications to defend against the British navy from proceeding to Philadelphia. One of those forts, manned by only 575 men would have to face the onslaught of overwhelming odds. The fort, no more than earth and wood would see some of the most vicious fighting yet seen in the Revolutionary War. The battle would take a mere 40 minutes at a fort on the Delaware River on a Quaker farmers plantation called Red Bank. A fort called Mercer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though mostly forgotten, for nearly nine months in 1777 and 1778, British forces held the city of Philadelphia. With 266 Days: Eye-Witness Accounts of the British Occupation of Philadelphia, author Michael W. Tracy, Ph.D., hopes to fill this gap in the story of the war which shaped the American nation. Tracy combines accounts from the Pennsylvania Evening Post with excerpts from journal entries and personal letters from well-known figures (such as George Washington and Thomas Paine), citizens living in and around Philadelphia, and soldiers on the front lines, to give readers a "diary-like" account of the occupation. Tracy brings to life voices from the past to present a vivid story of life--on both sides of the conflict--during the occupation. As we read accounts not only of war, but also of everyday life, the story of the occupation becomes more than just another war story--it becomes a historical treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, Congress commissioned the National Park Service to compile a list of sites and landmarks connected with the American Revolution that it deemed vital to preserve for future generations. Some of these sites are well known--Bunker Hill, Valley Forge, Fort Ticonderoga--and in no danger of being lost; others less so-- Blackstock's Plantation in South Carolina or Bryan's Station in Kentucky--and more vulnerable. But all are central to the story of our nation's fight for independence. From battlefields to encampments, meeting houses to museums, these places offer us a chance to rediscover the remarkable men and women who founded this nation and to recognize the relevance of not just what they did, but where they did it. The American Revolution: A Historical Guidebook takes readers to nearly 150 of these sites, providing an overview of the Revolution through an exploration of the places where American independence was articulated, fought for, and eventually secured. Beginning with the Boston Common, first occupied by British troops in 1768, and closing with Fraunces Tavern in New York, where George Washington bid farewell to his officers on December 4, 1783, Kennedy takes readers on a tour of the most significant places of Revolutionary history. Accompanied by illuminating excerpts and essays from some of the foremost scholars in the field, including David McCullough, Barbara Tuchman, David Hackett Fischer, Eric Foner, and John Ferling, the entries move in a roughly chronological order from the pre-Revolutionary years up through 1787. Taken together, the combination of site, essay, and excerpt provides rich context and overview, giving a sense of the major figures and events as well as the course of the Revolution, and cover topics ranging from the Boston Tea Party to the frontier wars. The guide is encyclopedic in scope and covers a wide geographical sweep. Accompanied by historical maps, as well as a number of illuminating primary documents including the Declaration of Independence and letters from John Adams and George Washington, it offers a comprehensive picture of how the Revolutionary War unfolded on American soil, and also points readers to the best writing on the subject in the last fifty years. The American Revolution: A Historical Guidebook is an essential companion for anyone interested in the story and history of our nation's founding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on soldiers' and civilians' vivid accounts--many uncovered for the first time from private collections--the story of the compelling fight for independence reaches its most desperate moments. This second in a two-volume set follows the saga from Cornwallis's triumphal march of his British and Hessian troops into Philadelphia in late September to Washington's movement of the weary Continental forces to camp at Valley Forge in December. Defeated at Brandywine, the Continental forces were worn out and ill equipped. Yet on October 4, Washington embarked on his first major offensive of the war--a surprise attack at dawn on Howe's main camp at Germantown. Only narrowly defeated, the Continentals gained valuable experience and new confidence in the possibility of victory. The seige of the Delaware River forts--one of the bloodiest and prolonged battles of the war--ended with British success in mid-November, but still Howe failed to end the war. He tried unsuccessfully to draw Washington from the fortified hills of Whitemarsh. As the Continental forces moved to Valley Forge for the winter, they would have to face their greatest challenge--survival.
