Book Stratigraphic sedimentological Investigation of Mississippi River Bank Failure Fort Jackson Louisiana

Download or read book Stratigraphic sedimentological Investigation of Mississippi River Bank Failure Fort Jackson Louisiana written by Daniel J. Stanley and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes a stratigraphical-sedimentological investigation of soil samples undetaken to help interpret the causes of bank failures and recessions along the Mississippi River bend west of Fort Jackson, La. This bend, the last in the river before it flows into the Gulf of Mexico, lies approximately 60 air miles southeast of New Orleans and about 21.5 river miles above Head of Passes. According to observations and hydrographic surveys by the U.S. Army Engineer District, New Orleans, bank recession by progressive erosion is active in the entire band area, but is supplemented by deep bank failures in the area lying between survey ranges 10-D and 12. Individual failures are known to have occurred just prior to 1934, in 1947, and between 1958 and 1962. Since each failure has destroyed an area about 150 to 200 ft wide (measured perpendicular to the bank) between the levee and the bank, the levee is progressively being threatened.

Book Rhode Island s Civil War Dead

Download or read book Rhode Island s Civil War Dead written by Robert Grandchamp and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhode Island sent 23,236 men to fight in the Civil War. They served in eight infantry regiments, three heavy artillery regiments, three regiments and one battalion of cavalry, a company of hospital guards and 10 batteries of light artillery. Hundreds more served in the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps. Rhode Islanders participated in nearly every major battle of the war, firing the first volleys at Bull Run, and some of the last at Appomattox. How many died in the Civil War is a question that has long eluded historians. Drawing on a 20-year study of regimental histories, pension files, letters, diaries, and visits to every cemetery in the state, award-winning Civil War historian Robert Grandchamp documents 2,217 Rhode Islanders who died as a direct result of military service. Each regiment is identified, followed by the name, rank and place of residence for each soldier, the details of their deaths and, where known, their final resting places.

Book excerpt: Fort Jackson is a sprawling military base east of Columbia, South Carolina. With the impending entry of America into World War I, city fathers recognized the country's need for military training camps and made a successful proposal to the US Army for construction of a camp near Columbia. Named after Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans and the seventh US president, Camp Jackson soon became the home of the famous 81st "Wildcat" Division and, later, the 5th Infantry Division. Over time, the camp's prospects waned, but the advent of another world war brought renewed interest in the camp and its eventual designation as Fort Jackson in 1940. Fort Jackson has been instrumental in the mobilization and training of troops for service in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terror. Today, Fort Jackson is the Army's premier basic training installation, responsible for over 50 percent of Army trainees each year.
