Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a century after his death in 1878, the mere mention of John Larn’s name can trigger strong reactions along the Clear Fork of the Brazos River in northern Texas. In Bravo of the Brazos, Robert K. DeArment tells for the first time the complete story of this enigmatic and controversial figure. Larn was good-looking, well-mannered, and gentle around women and children. He was a successful rancher and renowned frontier sheriff. Yet he was also the charismatic leader of a vigilante committee that enjoyed widespread support. Before his death at age 29, Larn had killed or participated in killing at least a dozen men.

Book Texas Frontier Tales

Book excerpt: "Fort Griffin, the fort became a frontier outpost in 1867, originally called Camp Wilson but was renamed Fort Griffin shortly thereafter. It was built in the middle of Indian country and its soldiers were involved in many campaigns against hostile Native Americans. The fort had quarters for six companies and band; officers's quarters, adjutant's office, hospital, guardhouse, storehouses, forage house, bakery, stables, workshops, and laundress quarters. 126 Tonkawa Indians were located at the post, some employed as scouts. In 1877, two dozen Texas Rangers were added to the force at the fort. It remained a post until May 31, 1881 when because of the settling of the Indian situation and the buffalo depletion, the fort was abandoned. ... Fort Griffin, the town, originally called 'the Flat', grew up near the fort and became populated with settlers, cattlemen, buffalo hunters, merchants, and saloons. A wide open town, it consisted of the usual shootings, stage coach hold-ups, Indian depredations, robberies, and occasional hangings familiar to this time period and part of the west. After the fort was abandoned the town eventually met the same fate and slowly faded away."--Foreword.
