This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Considerations on the Siege and Defence of Fort Stanwix, in 1776: Read Before the New York Historical Society, June 19th, 1845 I have chosen for consideration, a passage in the eventful story of war of the American revolution. Few subjects are fraught with more intrinsic interest to the history of man, and his progress in the scale of civilization, than this remarkable appeal to arms. Historians have, as yet, failed to render ample justice to the event. That a mere handful of people, not over three millions at utmost - scattered over a wide continent, without a government - without funds - without arms destitute, indeed, of all the means of sovereign action, but such as the occasion called forth - that such a people - so few in numbers, so dispersed and so destitute, should have prevailed against the most powerful nation of modern times, is still the most signal event in the history of human government. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fitchburg in the War of the Rebellion Many Histories of the Great Rebellion have been written; many others will be, and perhaps the best and truest record of the perilous times through which we, as a Nation, have just passed, will be written many years hence. These will be general in their character, and will not descend to the details of the part which states, cities, towns and communities had in the great contest. Our present purpose is to put upon record in a concise form our share as a Town in the great work of vindicating the Constitution, the establishing of universal freedom, and preserving unsullied the glorious flag of the Republic. Justice, alike to the living and the dead of the actors in the great drama, demands that their deeds shall be embalmed in the memories of posterity through all coming time. Gratitude to the living and precious memories of the dead prompt us to the wel come task before us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fort Meigs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fort Meigs Classic Reprint written by James P. Averill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Meigs 3d. Fallen timbers. August 16, 1794, Gen. Wayne, leaving a suflicient force at Ft. Defiance, moved down the left bank of the river on the 18th a small fortification for the deposit of military stores was erected at Roch de Boeuf, a mile above the present village of Waterville, and named Ft. Deposit. Five miles below this point, on the morning of the 20th, Gen. Wayne's troops encountered the allied Indian forces commanded by the young and intrepid chief, Turkey Foot; the conflict, short, sharp and decisive, terminated in the overwhelming defeat of the Indians. It is known as the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and was one of the most important in its results that had ever been fought with the Indian tribes, for it ended in a final treaty of peace at Greenville, and concluded the persecutions of the pioneer settlers. This was chosen by Turkey Foot as his battle ground, because a hurricane had windrowed the forest trees, making an almost insurmountable obstruction to Wayne's mounted troops and a natural fortification for the Indians. Wayne, however, came upon them like the winds that had laid low the giants of the forest, his soldiers partaking of his own irresistible courage and fighting qualities; Mad Anthony, by reason of this, was afterward known among the various Indian tribes as Che-no-tin - translated, the Whirlwind. Near the base of Presque Isle Hill (an abrupt and narrow point of land, which extends like a promontorv toward the river, and which was also a portion of the battle ground) and a few yards distant from the water, is an immense bowlder, afterward carved by the Indians with representations of turkeys' feet, in memory of their beloved Chieftain who fell there during the conflict. Thus we are indebted to the savages for the only monument to mark the many historic spots in the valley. Lieut. Harrison (afterward commander-in-chief of the Northwestern army) was an aid-de camp to Gen. Wayne in this campaign. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fight for the Valley: A Story of the Siege of Fort Schuyler and the Battle of Oriskany in the Burgoyne Campaign of 1777Many of the old-time battles are utterly forgotten. Of many other battles the importance is but imperfectly pre sented in history. An ordinary reader is ready, for instance, to ascribe due value to the American victories over the British army under General Burgoyne, but too many who read may be almost ignorant of the Oneida Lake and MO hawk Valley campaign which made those victories possible.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
