Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Armstrong It is a fact worthy of mention that only a short time prior to the events which precipitated the final contest, six thousand dollars paid to the disaffected fragments of the Sacs and Foxes would have effected the substantial results achieved by the war, and quieted all complaints. The Government refused to compromise, and waged a war of extermination during which the flag of truce, held sacred by all the civilized nations of the world, was twice fired upon. The war cost two million dollars. The treaty made by General Scott with the Indians at the con elusion of the war terminated at last the difficulties and also added six million acres west of the Mississippi (afterwards comprised in the State of Iowa) known as the Black Hawk Purchase, to the territory of the United States. Owing to the fact that an epidemic of cholera was raging among General Scott's troops detained at Fort Armstrong, all the deliberations connected with this important treaty were conducted in a tent on the west bank of the river. The ground occupied was the site upon which was afterward built the first house erected in the city of Davenport. Black Hawk and a few of his adherents were held as hostages, and with a view of impressing them with the vastness of the country, the numerical strength and greatness of the people, they were taken to Washington and from there through many of the large cities of the East. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Another almost remarkable, and at the same time altogether pleasant, explanation came to the rescue through the great kindness of George Wilson, of Lexington, Missouri, when we bumped into each other as we did during my long years of exploration. George Wilson laid the story before me: His father, Lieu tenant George Wilson, was stationed at Fort Crawford Prairie du Chien - in 1832, and, with the troops of Zachary Taylor and General Atkinson, came to Dixon. He was the chum and confidant of Davis and delivered letters between Davis and Miss Taylor when an elopement was contemplated. Davis had started down the Mississippi for Kentucky on his furlough, but when at or near Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, he met Atkinson and his troops preparing for their departure up-stream on April 8th, once more to drive back Black Hawkwho was preparing for another raid into Illinois, he abandoned his furlough and returned to Fort Armstrong with Atkinson. With this positive explanation, I should have felt justified in handing our debunking friend, who was trying to steal old Dixon's glory, a piece of my mind. Fortunately I kept still, because Wilson was mistaken. With the further information I secured from Washington, I learned that Davis left Fort Crawford March 26, 1832, on his sixty-day furlough and went straight to Mississippi, where he passed the sixty - day period. Once more I found myself at sea, struggling not only with this later information but with the almost hope less odds added that on May 26, the day of the expiration of his furlough, Davis applied for the four months additional period allowed in his original furlough if desired. Furthermore I learned that this application for the additional four months had been allowed on July 21, just a few days before the termi nation of the war.
