Book Investigation of a New Formulation Reference Fluid for Use in Aerodynamic Acceptance Evaluation of Aircraft Ground Deicing and Anti icing Fluids

Download or read book Investigation of a New Formulation Reference Fluid for Use in Aerodynamic Acceptance Evaluation of Aircraft Ground Deicing and Anti icing Fluids written by Arlene Beisswenger and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A new formulation fluid is proposed for use as the reference fluid for aerodynamic testing and qualification of commercial aircraft deicing and anti-icing fluids. The new formulation fluid is to replace the currently used reference fluid, MIL-A-8243D, which allows for large variation in its composition. The MIL-A-8243D fluid, manufactured up to 2005, is no longer commercially available because its chief user, the United States Military, now uses qualified commercial Society of Automotive Engineers deicing and anti-icing fluids. The new formulation fluid, a mixture of 68% propylene, 20% tripropylene glycol, and 12% demineralized water, is chemically compatible with current glycol-based fluids. Furthermore, it can be produced more simply and accurately than the more complex military (MIL) formulation it replaces. Having the same viscosity as MIL-A-8243D, the new formulation reference has been found to be essentially aerodynamically indistinguishable from the MIL fluid in validation test runs in which both fluids were tested with a candidate fluid for high-speed ramp aerodynamic standard qualification. The measurements and validation testing accomplished in the present study support the adoption of the new fluid for use as the reference fluid for the high-speed ramp standard aerodynamic qualification test in place of the current MIL fluid."--Page [ii].

Book Aircraft Surface Coating Interaction with Aircraft Deicing Anti Icing Fluids

Download or read book Aircraft Surface Coating Interaction with Aircraft Deicing Anti Icing Fluids written by G-12ADF Aircraft Deicing Fluids and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides descriptions of test methods for determining if an aircraft surface coating of any thickness has adverse effects on aircraft deicing/anti-icing fluids with respect to fluid holdover time performance and aerodynamic performance.Although not the primary mandate of the G-12 Aircraft Ground Deicing Committee, this document also provides descriptions of suggested test methods for evaluating aircraft surface coatings with respect to durability, hardness, weathering, aerodynamic drag, ice adhesion, ice accumulation, contact angle, and thermal conductivity. These additional tests can provide informational data for characterizing the coatings and may be useful to operators when evaluating the coatings. This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides a description of screening methods for verifying whether aircraft surface coatings have adverse effects on aircraft deicing/anti-icing fluid performance as published in the holdover time guidelines. The surface coatings include thin film coatings, typically less than 1 mil (0.0254 mm) thick and sometimes called paint sealants or protectants, as well as bulk coatings that are typically greater than 2 mils (0.0508 mm) thick. Although recommended performance criteria have been outlined, ultimately, the interpretation of the test results outlined in this document will be left to the discretion of the aircraft operator.

Book A Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming Model to Optimize the Use of Aircraft Deicing and Anti icing Fluids

Download or read book A Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming Model to Optimize the Use of Aircraft Deicing and Anti icing Fluids written by Scott E. Ornitz and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study is proposed for understanding the use of aircraft deicing and antiicing fluids (ADAF) and optimal use of these fluids in airport operations. A detailed literature review of past and current technologies is conducted and possible opportunities to improve the use of ADAF and relevant recommendations are derived. Mathematical optimization models (e.g. MINLP with binary variables) based on a variety of objectives, which deal with exhaustive sets of system constraints are formulated, developed and applied to case studies. One real-life case study area which routinely carries out aircraft deicing is used for testing the mathematical optimization formulations for optimal use of fluids under budgetary and environmental compliance constraints. Based on the recommendations from one of the best optimization model formulations it is hoped that it will be used for a real-time implementation. Results from these formulations show the models to be robust and applicable.
