Book Schizophrenia in the 21st Century

Download or read book Schizophrenia in the 21st Century written by T.H.J. Burne and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schizophrenia is a poorly understood but very disabling group of brain disorders. While hallucinations and delusions (positive symptoms of schizophrenia) feature prominently in diagnostic criteria, impairments of memory and attentional processing (cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia) are attracting increasing interest in modern neuropsychiatry. Schizophrenia in the 21st Century brings together recent findings on this group of devastating disorders. We are still a long way from having effective treatment options, particularly for cognitive symptoms, and lack effective interventions and ways to prevent this disease. This volume covers various current options for therapy, clinical research into cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia and preclinical research in animal models.

Book Perspectives on the Popularisation of Natural Sciences in a Diachronic Overview

Download or read book Perspectives on the Popularisation of Natural Sciences in a Diachronic Overview written by Eleonora Chiavetta and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume combines strands of research currently being debated in linguistic scholarship, such as the issue of specialized discourse, the issue of knowledge dissemination, and the issue of the versatility of genres. It presents some of the relevant findings of an Italian National Research Project focusing on specialized discourse, which involved researchers and scholars from several Italian universities. Discursive popularisation is here analysed with regard to the domain of natural sciences, particularly focusing on botany and gardening. Another relevant feature of the book is the diachronic approach used in discussing the issue of popularisation. The authors of the volume focus on their research following their own methodological choices, and, as such, investigate critical discourse analysis, genre analysis, and corpus analysis. All the authors, however, apply a diachronic perspective to their study. Chapters, therefore, span from the dissemination of science in the 17th century English scientific community, through the Late Modern English Period, to the end of the 19th century, throughout the 20th century, up to the present day. Within the common frame of natural sciences, each author develops a specific topic such as Irish botanical terminology; the development of garden notebooks; the manipulation of Darwin’s theory of evolution; the role played by the Puritans in promoting a plain and clear English scientific prose; Darwinism in the 20th and 21st century British press; and scientific popularisation in Nobel lectures.

Book Re presenting Research

Download or read book Re presenting Research written by Florentine Marnel Sterk and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on the textual features, or ‘strategies’, which form popularization discourse. In popularization discourse, research findings from academia are re-presented to make them noteworthy to society and influential for everyday life. Popularization involves recontextualization, or reimagination of findings in an everyday and newsworthy context, and reformulation, the use of audience-appropriate language to increase text comprehension and engagement. ‘Re-presenting research’ presents an empirically grounded, analytic framework for the analysis of popularization texts. Its applicability spans across disciplinary, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary fields, and overarches science communication, science journalism, and research communication. The book offers theoretical background information on popularization discourse, empirical underpinning of the construction of the framework, and practical applicability in examples from multiple text types and academic fields. This book acts as a guide for those working with or on popularization discourse – whether it is to analyze it or learn about it.

Book Communicating Specialized Knowledge

Download or read book Communicating Specialized Knowledge written by Marina Bondi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was born out of the idea that domain-specific knowledge has two major dimensions, since, on the one hand, peer-to-peer communication is primarily intended to further research within specific disciplines, while, on the other, domain-external, asymmetric communication of ‘filtered’ knowledge caters to different types of lay-audiences. Collectively, the chapters in the volume take the reader on a journey through knowledge communication and knowledge (re)presentation strategies that are able to successfully disseminate and communicate. The domains under scrutiny are medicine and health, corporate communication, cultural heritage and tourism. A number of issues are addressed at the interface of corpus linguistics, genre studies and multimodal analysis. The variety of questions posed and methods used to explore corpus data will contribute to further debate among scholars in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, multimodality, media studies and computer-mediated communication.

Book Textile Design Theory in the Making

Download or read book Textile Design Theory in the Making written by Elaine Igoe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textile design inhabits a liminal space spanning art, design and craft. This book explores how textile design bridges the decorative and the functional, and takes us from handcrafting to industrial manufacture. In doing so, it distinguishes textiles as a distinctive design discipline, against the backdrop of today's emerging design issues. With commentaries from a range of international design scholars, the book demonstrates how design theory is now being employed in diverse scenarios to encourage innovation beyond the field of design itself. Positioning textiles within contemporary design research, Textile Design Theory in the Making reveals how the theory and practice of textile design exist in a synergistic, creative relationship. Drawing on qualitative research methods, including auto-ethnography and feminist critique, the book provides a theoretical underpinning for textile designers working in interdisciplinary scenarios, uniting theory and texts from the fields of anthropology, philosophy, literature and material design.

Book Luther vs Pope Leo

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul R. Hinlicky
  • Publisher : Abingdon Press
  • Release : 2017-05-16
  • ISBN : 1501804219
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Luther vs Pope Leo written by Paul R. Hinlicky and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther and Pope Leo X awake in the afterlife. It is 2017, and they have been asleep since the posting of the Ninety-Five Theses in 1517, the imagined execution of Luther, and the death of Leo in a strange accident. To their mutual chagrin not only does each discover the other face-to-face in “heaven,” but they learn that by divine decree they are roomed together indefinitely. The pope’s first reaction to the news is that this is his purgatory for the sins of the Medicis. Luther despairs that he is in hell: “It was works after all,” he surmises. Discussing the key issues that divided Catholics and Protestants and birthed a Reformation 500 years ago, Hinlicky creates an imaginary reconciliation in heaven between Martin Luther and Pope Leo X, who work through the controversies that divided them in their historical encounter. They even get a little help from John Wesley. In this book, Luther and Leo become the creative instruments of a renewed commitment to Protestant-Catholic ecumenical reconciliation (as signaled by the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification by the Lutheran World Federation and the Catholic Church in 1999). "What an imagination! Paul Hinlicky goes to the heart of the tragic beauty of the Lutheran movement. And along the way he invites us to reimagine the way the gospel is calling us to faith and hope right now. What an extraordinary book!" —Richard Graham, Bishop, Metropolitan Washington, DC Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America “A fascinating thought experiment into how Martin Luther and Pope Leo might be forced to confront their differences, air their grievances, and inch toward reconciliation. Hinlicky sets up the purgatory scenes with illuminating historical backdrops that help us better understand each man’s motivations for his words and actions. As we appreciate more fully their views and their flaws, finding space for shared convictions becomes possible.” —Deanna A. Thompson, Professor of Religion, Hamline University, Saint Paul, MN; author, The Virtual Body of Christ in a Suffering World (Abingdon Press) “Hinlicky’s imaginative construction of dialogue between Luther and Leo X bound together in purgatory is at once thoroughly engaging, theologically clarifying, and frequently amusing. The book should be of great interest to those who continue to be scandalized by the divisions in Christ’s body, especially as it suggests ways to reinvigorate the ecumenical conversation.” —Fritz Oehlschlaeger, Emeritus Professor of English, Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg, VA “Imaging a conversation between Martin Luther and Pope Leo in purgatory, Paul Hinlicky weaves together history and theology to tell the story of the progress made in ecumenical relations since Vatican II. Playful yet profound, the book brims with theological insight!” - Lois Malcolm, Professor of Systematic Theology, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN

Book Science Communication

Download or read book Science Communication written by Annette Leßmöllmann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is an essentially cooperative, critical, and dynamic enterprise. Were it not for the continuous creation and improvement of special forms of communication, argumentation, and innovation, all of them suitable for its three key features, scientific knowledge and progress could hardly be achieved. The aim of this volume is to explore the nature of science communication in its several functions, modalities, combinations, and evolution - past, present, and future. One of our objectives is to provide an overview of the richness and variety of elements that take part in performing the complex tasks and fulfilling the functions of science communication. The overall structure and criteria for the choice of topics: 1. The origin and target of a communication episode - its source(s) and addressee(s). 2. The media of communication employed. 3. The thematic field and content types. 4. The distinction between aspects of science communication (e.g., media, texttypes, domains, communicative maxims) and aspects of research on science communication (e.g., the contribution of different research traditions to the understanding of science communication). 5. The history and dynamics of science communication (past, present, and future), both in an empirical perspective (e.g., the development of the research article) and a systematic perspective (e.g., what are basic types and mechanisms of change in science communication).

Book Production Planning by Mixed Integer Programming

Download or read book Production Planning by Mixed Integer Programming written by Yves Pochet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-09-23 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programming (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. Based on twenty years worth of research in which the authors have played a significant role, the book addresses real life industrial production planning problems (involving complex production structures with multiple production stages) using MIP modeling and reformulation approach. The book provides an introduction to MIP modeling and to planning systems, a unique collection of reformulation results, and an easy to use problem-solving library. This approach is demonstrated through a series of real life case studies, exercises and detailed illustrations. Review by Jakub Marecek (Computer Journal) The emphasis put on mixed integer rounding and mixing sets, heuristics in-built in general purpose integer programming solvers, as well as on decompositions and heuristics using integer programming should be praised... There is no doubt that this volume offers the present best introduction to integer programming formulations of lotsizing problems, encountered in production planning. (2007)
