Book Vulnerable Workers

Download or read book Vulnerable Workers written by Dr Maria Giovannone and published by Gower Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading academic authorities contributing to this book have been involved in major studies carried out for international organisations, individual governments, and national trades' union organisations; in Vulnerable Workers they consider the growth of job insecurity, the prevalence of flexible or temporary work, and the emergence of precarious forms of self-employment. They look at the new market economies of post-communist Eastern Europe and China, where economic development may occur at the expense of workers' lives and health; 'misclassification' by employers of workers as 'contractors', denying them access to rights; and the plight of migrant, transient and 'invisible' workers. The impact of supply chain business strategies on the most vulnerable workers; and on the complex relationships between levels of job security and the presence of different kinds of risks are similarly assessed. The contributors also propose responses to the challenges they highlight. The role of employee representatives is examined, together with the potential to enhance worker capability through organisational change. New legislative approaches, and changes to traditional compensation and social security systems are considered. Academics and researchers, policy makers, regulators, trades unionists and occupational health professionals - and wise employers - will all find a use for this book.

Book The Domestic Analogy and World Order Proposals

Download or read book The Domestic Analogy and World Order Proposals written by Hidemi Suganami and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-09-29 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How profitable is it for world order to transfer the legal and political principles, which sustain order within states to the domain of relations between states? This has been one of the central and most contentious questions in the study of international relations. The term 'domestic analogy' refers to the idea that inter-state relations are amenable to the same type of institutional control as the relations of individuals and groups within states. In this study Dr Suganami discusses the role the domestic analogy has played in proposals about world order, peace, justice and welfare in the period since 1814. As well as analysing the ideas of major writers on international law and relations, Hidemi Suganami examines the creation of the League of Nations, the United Nations and its agencies, and the European Community - all of which have sprung from the domestic analogy. The Domestic Analogy and World Order Proposals makes an important contribution to the history of ideas about world order, exploring how this particular mode of reasoning about international relations has evolved against changing historical backgrounds.

Book Labour Regulation in the 21st Century

Download or read book Labour Regulation in the 21st Century written by Pietro Manzella and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic crisis has highlighted major shortcomings in the EU flexicurity strategy which, although suitable to tackle structural unemployment in a period of economic growth, it proved unable to stand the impact of the recession, which requires specific measures to maintain employment. Against this background, the authors of the present papers, which were presented at the International Scientific Conference “Labour Market of the 21st Century: Looking for Flexibility and Security”, on the occasion of the 370th Anniversary of the establishment of Vilnius University’s Faculty of Law, that took place on 12–14 May 2011, investigate the development of labour regulation in the 21st century, with particular reference to the relation between flexibility and security and to the need to strike a balance between these two elements. The contributions address the issue in a comparative and transnational perspective and provide some insights into the development of national models of flexibility and social security.

Book The Global Labour Market

Download or read book The Global Labour Market written by Roger Blanpain and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As global power relations increasingly favour international capital, it becomes crucial for labour and employment lawyers to center their field in a supranational context. As long as wages, social security, and taxes remain national matters, states compete at this level in order to attract foreign investment. This does not bode well for employees or the self-employed. Most ameliorative measures come in the form of unenforceable and‘soft lawand’ guidelines and recommendations. The conference recorded in this vitally important book confronts this losing battle of local responses to global challenges. The book reprints the papers submitted to that conference by twenty-three outstanding scholars from fourteen countries. Among the many critical issues they expose and discuss are the following: and• the proliferation of varieties of non-standard employment; and• protection of migrant workersand’ rights by regional organizations; and• global and regional trends in the human resources function; and• work training and education policy; and• effectiveness of equality and non-discrimination standards; and• involvement of employees in workplace decisionmaking; and and• the need for an equitable social safety net. In the course of the discussion the authors examine cases from many countries, including not only EU Member States (both West and East) and the U.S., but also Japan, Chile, South Africa, and Indonesia. With a focus on the nexus of multinational enterprises and international standards, the book provides both a sharp image of where labour law stands in todayand’s worldand—revealing serious social problems in a clearer light than is usually encounteredand—and a very valuable guide to directions to pursue and potential solutions, offered by some of the most engaged and committed minds in the field. It is an indispensable resource for legal workers in this and‘eye of the stormand’ of globalization.

Book Clausewitz s Puzzle

Download or read book Clausewitz s Puzzle written by Andreas Herberg-Rothe and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blending detailed contextual analysis with issues in modern-day international relations this book provides a major new analysis of the theory of Clausewitz and its relevance to contemporary society. This book argues that Clausewitz developed a wide-ranging political theory of war by reflecting on the success, the limitations, and the failure of Napoleon's method of waging war, a theory, which is still relevant in light of contemporary conflict. This new interpretation is the result of reflecting on Clausewitz's theory in light of the new developments and lays down the foundation of a general theory of war by concentrating on Clausewitz's historical analyses of war campaigns. For the first time analysis of three paradigmatic military campaigns is placed at the centre of understanding surrounding Clausewitz's 'On War': The author argues that the limitations of Napoleon's strategy, as revealed in Russia and in his final defeat, enabled Clausewitz to develop a general theory of war. This book is a project of the Oxford Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War.

This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes a number of papers written in English and published in the last fifteen years in which the Italian labour market faced many changes. The book not only provides the international readership with a frame of reference – in both conceptual and legal terms – that helps to appreciate the Italian Labour Law currently in force, but also represents a contribution to moving beyond the self-referential nature of the Italian debate on the reform of labour laws. Book excerpt: Clausewitz's "On War," first published in 1832, remains the classic study of the nature and conditions of warfare. Best remembered for his pronouncement that war is a continuation of politics by other means and for his observations on total war, he gave a new philosophical foundation to the art of war. Complex and often misunderstood, Clausewitz has fascinated and influenced generations of politicians and strategic thinkers. Beatrice Heuser's comprehensive study is the first book on how to read Clausewitz and how others have read himfrom the military commanders in World War Ithrough Lenin and Mao Zedung to strategists in the nuclear age. The result is an accessible and illuminating introduction to the most influential study of the art of war."
